Peshtigo Ousted By Omro In D-3 Opener

Opening night in the girls portion of tournament play, saw league co-champ Peshtigo get ousted by Omro while 4 M-O Conference teams come up victorious. The Bulldogs (14-6) gave visiting Omro a battle before suffering a 39-29 Division 3 setback.

In D-4 action, Gillett knocked off Menominee Indians 43-30 while Crivitz fell to Northern Lakes Conference champion Crandon 47-27.

Results from the D-5 hardwood courts saw Niagara top Laona 50-31, Lena level Sevastopol 43-27, Suring knock off Bowler 60-41 and Goodman-Pembine (15-7) take care of Three Lakes 45-26.

Action will resume on Friday, March 1 with Gillett (4) heading to top seed Oconto and Coleman (2) entertaining Crandon (3) in the D-4 regional finals.

Regional semifinal pairings in D-5 find Niagara at Marion (1), Goodman-Pembine (6) taking the hike to Wabeno (3), Lena traveling to Gibraltar (4) and Suring playing at NEW Lutheran (2).

Marinette (1-21) lasted just one night in Division 2 dropping a 57-25 contest at Kaukauna (4-19).

Bulldogs Bopped

By Omro 39-29

In a defensive dominated post-season home clash Tuesday, the Bulldogs never held the upper hand in suffering a 39-29 setback. Finding driving lanes closed off by the helping Omro man defense, Peshtigo settled for outside or off-balanced shots throughout the contest.

Freshman Amanda Majewski topped Peshtigo with 9 points, Carly Dietrich added 6 while Shannen Ganter, Brittany Marquardt and Teja Tonn chipped in with 3 points each.

A layup by Ganter tied the score at 3-3 all in the early going before Omro worked the ball inside and used paint jumpers from 6’1 Tessa Zimmer and Taryn Bosquez to pry open an 8-4 edge. Overcoming four traveling calls, the Bulldogs did manage to regroup and used a layup by Dietrich along with a buzzer-beating bucket from Marquardt to trail 12-8 at the first break.

Peshtigo’s offense continued to struggle in period two as Omro raced to a 23-13 halftime lead. The Bulldogs didn’t get on the scoreboard until the 4:32 mark when Majewski dropped in a layup for a 19-10 deficit then used a baseline jumper by Amanda Emmes to cut the gap to 23-13 at halftime. After getting burned for easy layups against their fullcourt press, the Bulldogs switched to a 1-3-1 defense to slow down the Foxes in the frame.

A 3-point play by Cassie Borgardt extended the Omro lead to 26-13 (6:15) before the Bulldogs unleashed a 5-0 run. Dietrich buried a jumper, Majewski the back end of a two shot foul while Ryleigh Klaver connected for a 26-18 score.

As quickly as Klaver scored, Zimmer answered with a layup for a 28-18 spread. The final points of the third quarter came at the 1:44 mark on a three point shot from Majewski.

Buckets by Courtney VanDamme and Borgardt pushed the Omro lead to 32-21 (5:01) before Peshtigo mounted one last rally. Majewski canned a free throw then watched Marquardt add a 5-footer for a 32-24 score with 3:39 remaining.

Over the final 2:30 Peshtigo was whistled for 8 fouls as Omro made 4 of 10 free throws to seal the win. After going scoreless for nearly 3 minutes, Peshtigo got late baskets from Majewski (0:47) along with a trey from Tonn (0:31) for the final points.

Marinette Booted

In Opener 57-25

A long season came to a quick end in the tournament as the Marinette Marines dropped a 57-25 road clash at Kaukauna.

Turning the ball over 39 times, the Marines fell behind 28-15 at the half before getting outscored 29-10 over the final 16 minutes.

Amanda Lesandrini popped in 8 points for the Marines while Cassie Hilbert added 6.

Third Quarter Surge

Keys Gillett Victory

Holding a 17-13 halftime edge, the Gillett Tigers let loose with a 16-6 barrage in period three to knock off visiting Menominee Indian 43-30.

Crivitz Clipped

By Crandon

The Crivitz girls closed the first quarter of Tuesday’s playoff game in Crandon on top of the sharp shooting Cardinals by a score of 10-8.

Unfortunately for the Wolverines, the opening quarter would be the only one in which the team managed double digit scoring as Crandon pulled away for the 48-27 victory.

Crivitz got 13 points from Kelsey Fickler and another five from Jennifer Kempka while Crandon was paced by 23 from Sara Cotrell.

Dominating the middle quarters by a 28-11 edge, the Goodman-Pembine Patriots claimed their tournament opener with a 45-26 win over visiting Three Lakes. A slow start saw Goodman-Pembine trail 9-1.

Rachel Stankevich paced the Patriots with 17 points and 10 rebounds while Courtney Goyak added 16 points and 16 boards.

NEW Lutheran 58-23

A winless season came to a close for the Cavalettes falling to host NEW Lutheran 58-23. STAA trailed 32-12 at halftime before getting outscored 26-11 over the final two frames.

Taylor Wilson fired in 17 points for STAA while Jaci Mielke and Sadie Nier paced NEW with 13 and 12 points.

Eagles School Panthers

Suring’s Kelsey School poured in 17 points, including a pair of threes in the fourth quarter, to lead all scorers and help her team to a 60-41 win over the visiting Panthers of Bowler.

Calley VanBellinger added 13 in the win while teammate Erin Fisher had 10.

Bowler was led by 16 from Ashlynn Brisk and also got 12 from Carli Peters.

The Wildcats of Lena got it done against visiting Sevastopol, notching a pair of big scoring performances on their way to a 43-27 win over the Pioneers.

Lena’s Emily Ellman and Marlena Wagner each scored 13 points in the win while teammate Kayla Vanlanen chipped in six.

Niagara Thumps Laona

Kaitlyn Lundin scored 12 points and pulled down another dozen rebounds as the Badgers dispatched the visiting Fighting Kellys 50-31 in Niagara on Tuesday.

The Badgers also got five boards and 11 points from Brooklyn Wolosyn and 10 points to go along with eight boards for Melinda MacDonald,

Jenna Carlton added nine for Niagara in the win, including the team’s only three pointer in the opening eight minutes.

Thunderhawks Too

Much For Rangers

The Oneida Nation girls turned in a 17-4 second quarter on Tuesday en route to a 67-20 win over the visiting Rangers of Wausaukee.

Jessica House notched a game high 22 points for the Thunderhawks, 16 of them coming in the first half and then teammate Lindsey Danforth took over in the second half of the game, scoring 16 of her 20 in the third and fourth quarters.

The Rangers were led by 12 points from Sara Wickman.
