Helen Jane Kossel, 90, of Carney, Mi. passed away Tuesday, March 19 at Pinecrest Medical Care Facility, Powers, Mi.
Born Feb. 11, 1923 to the late Arthur and Anna (Rasmussen) Slottke in Carney, Mi., she attended Stephenson schools and was the valedictorian of Stephenson High School, Class of 1941.
She played basketball for the Stephenson girls team in high school and was a lifelong follower and supporter of local basketball teams. On Aug. 11, 1945 she married Frank Kossel at St. Bruno Catholic Church. He preceded her in death on Nov. 28, 1985. She was a faithful homemaker plus she worked on the family farm with her husband, Frank. She later went to work as a custodian for the Carney Nadeau School. She was a member of St. Bruno Catholic Church and St. Ann's society. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for 68 years, a Foster Grandparent at Carney Nadeau School, a position she was passionate about, and an avid stamp collector. She also enjoyed reading, quilting, gardening and playing games with her family, which she usually won.
Surviving are three children, Carol (Paul) Larson, Roger (Linda) Kossel and Diane (Dan) Waite; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Audrey Boyd of Bremerton, Wash. and Phyllis Christensen of Flint, Mi. and nieces and nephews.
Along with her parents and her husband, Frank, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold and James Slottke.
Funeral services were held on Friday, March 22 at St. Bruno Catholic Church in Nadeau, Mi. at 5 p.m. Friends called at the church from 2 p.m. until the Mass of Christian Burial. Fr. Michael Vichich officiated and burial was in Nadeau Township Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established in her name for the Foster Grandparent Program. Anderson Diehm Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
