Peshtigo Golfers Look For Repeat In M-OIssue Date: April 3, 2013
With three top level players back in the fold, the Peshtigo Bulldog golf team is eying another M-O Conference title run under head coach Pete Kretz. The blue and white linksters are anxious to get on the course, but right now Mother Nature is limiting them to hitting golf balls inside.
This year will be quite demanding on the team because of the weather delay. The 18-hole match for the M-O is at Little River which will be advantageous for a shortened season, Kretz explained.
All three of those returners are seniors...Mitchell and Marcus Behnke along with Jordan VanBeek. Joining them will be senior Jeff Bruso and sophomore Alycia Schenk. Three other golfers will be trying to see some varsity time in James Brabant, Jake Enderby and Levi Sterzing.
We are returning 3 solid players in Van Beek, Marcus and Mitchell Behnke. Mitchell was the conference MVP in 2012. The team won the conference in 2012 and should be one of the favorite teams in 2013, Kretz said. Depth is the weakness, but we have some players with experience. Alycia Schenk and Jeff Bruso both played quite a few varsity matches last year, Levi Sterzing and Jake Enderby both have talent enough to play some varsity. James Brabant a former baseball player may also be able to play some matches.
One key name missing from the Bulldog roster is Nick Miles, who graduated and was a top performer during the 2012 title run.
The golf season is scheduled to begin on Thursday, April 4 but no area courses are open. The 9-hole M-O match is on April 9 with the 15-team Peshtigo Invitational tentatively slated for Saturday, April 13.
Two League Picks
To Key Cavaliers
With no seniors on the roster, the STAA Cavaliers could be a work in progress for the upcoming golf season. Head coach Budde Fifarek, entering his 7th season, has seven returning letterwinners, including all-conference players in Mike Schmidt and Casey Boyle.
Also back are junior John Chilcote along with sophomores Stuart Anderson, Andy Lang, Molly Linczeski and Taylor Wilson.
Players looking to make a mark are junior Sihyeon Kim, sophomore Garrett Nikolai and freshmen Levi Carlson and Adam Sorenson.
The Cavaliers also took a hit when Nathan Faucett decided to graduate a semester early to enter the military. Also gone is Lexi Wilson, who is on the UW-Green Bay golf team.
Our strengths will be Mike and Casey and we have 4-5 players that could help. Youth will be a factor, but they are all great kids and a pleasure to coach, Fifarek said. If Nathan would have stayed in school this semester, we would have competed for the title. Some younger players now have the chance to contribute to the varsity this year.
Lena Returns 5 Vets
To 2013 Golf Team
Despite having 5 letterwinners returning, 7th year head coach Jim Torzala still feels his squad will finish in the bottom third of the conference.
We have a good core of golfers, 5 returning letterwinners but are very young with several first time players, Torzala said.
Sam Beschta is the only senior on the team and will be joined by letterwinners Cole Huberty, Blaik Fischer and Dakota Ducane, all juniors, along with sophomore Randy Schroeder.
Other varsity prospects are juniors Katie Waara and Zach Simonson along with sophomores Brooke Woodford and Kaley Kaminski.
A possible starting line-up for Lena would be Beschta, Schroeder, Fischer, Huberty and Ducane.
