Returning State Qualifiers Key To Peshtigo 's Track Success

With a few of its key components from a successful 2012 season returning, as well as a strong looking group of up and comers in the freshman and sophomore ranks, the Peshtigo Bulldog track and field team is counting on being one of a few teams that will be in contention for what should be a wide-open M-O Conference race.

Looking to be competitive across the board with a crew of 23 boys on the roster to go along with 25 girls, the Bulldogs are going to count on getting a lot of points from standouts like senior sprinter Brad Neumann, current state title holder in the Division 2 100 meters, who will be running in Minnesota next year as a freshman for the Golden Gophers, in the dashes as well as junior Nicole Motkowski, a high jump specialist who brought home a third place finish last year at state as a sophomore.

Distance wise, the Bulldogs are looking for good times from junior Aaron Bhatoya, who qualified 11th in sectional action last year, junior Eddie Jornlin, sophomore Khalid Eljack and freshmen Tyler Nault and Bryce Trimberger.

The boys will also look to get points in the speed events from freshman Jake Romenesko, one of six rookies looking to contribute to the boys’ side of the events, as well as junior Levi Sanborn in the hurdles and sprint relay. Sanborn should find plenty of success in the hurdles and be a factor in the long jump, an event he took 10th in at the sectional level in 2012.

The Bulldogs are also looking to their throwers for points in 2013. Zach Neumann, a junior shot put threat who took sixth in sectional competition last year, will be joined by returning seniors Gagan Daroach and Adam Hynnek while Jordan Berth, who participated in throwing events when he was in middle school, will be joining the track and field for the first time as a varsity athlete.

Both teams should be improved. Barring injury and assuming that we get everyone who is injured now back and healthy, we’ll be pretty solid, said Peshtigo co-head coach Rick Neumann, who leads the team along with Jim Stillman. I think the conference is up for grabs for both the boys and the girls and I think a few teams will be contesting, barring injury of course.

The girls’ side of the roster will see a strong infusion of new talent as the team will feature 10 ninth graders as well as seven sophomores. The younger Peshtigo girls will see the bulk of their points coming out of the sprints. Destiny LaPlant, Esther Kangas, Mikenzie Howarth, Sam MacGlashin, Valerie Gable, Maggie Thill, Megan Tebo and Ashlyn Caelwaerts are all ninth graders and all are going to be sprinting for Peshtigo alongside sophomores Claire Stuart and Jade Jansen. Joining these young speedsters will be juniors Kelsey Enderby, Heidi Angwall, Jenna Spangenberg and Amanda Emmes as well as senior Amie Parker.

The Peshtigo girls will also look to gather a lot of points in the distance and middle distance events. Freshman Saige Ruleau should help out right away along with sophomores Taylor Sodini and Sam Rauch as well as newcomer Stuart.

The throwing events for the Bulldogs will be handled by seniors Erica Carviou and Paige Immel, junior Amanda Emmes and sophomores Katie Rhode and Bailey Cahill.

According to co-head coach Neumann, the start date to this year’s outdoor track season is still up in the air. Events for this week have been cancelled and with all of the loop’s schools reporting snow on their tracks, Peshtigo’s triangular event next Tuesday in Crivitz against the Wolverines and the Niagara Badgers isn’t a sure thing either.

It’s getting old doing so much of our work inside but we do try to get outside as much as we can, Neumann says. It hurts the field events quite a bit. You don’t have your long jump pits or your triple jump pits. You can high jump inside but it’s difficult to find a place to set up for that. Our throwers can work indoors but it’s just different throwing into a net. So those are the events that suffer when you’re not able to get out.

Badgers Bring Back

Ten Letterwinners

Ian Kawetshanky and Jordan Zawada, along with Rachel Broullire, Jenna Carlton, Kaitlyn Lundin and Melinda MacDonald on the ladies side will be the lone seniors on the roster for the Niagara Badgers’ track and field team this season.

Nate Moll and Joe Swanson are returning lettermen leading fellow juniors Tom Sielaff, Brett Pultz, Jake Oratch, Montana Neuens and Wyatt Aderman while Adam Parent will be the boys’ lone ninth grader participating this year.

Madisin Depas, Jule Fruend and Lena Klages make up the junior class for the 2013 girls while letterwinners Shelby Borchardt and Shanna Nordell pace fellow sophomores Abbey Bagnieschi, Amber Conery and Maria Miller.

Freshmen Katie Steeno and Brooklyn Wolosyn round out the roster.
