THE CITY REBORN FROM THE ASHES OF AMERICA'S MOST DISASTROUS FOREST FIRE
Bay Area Barbarians To Open Rugby Season
It was a cold, frosty day in February when the Bay Area Barbarians High School Rugby Club gathered alongside Lauerman Field in Marinette, but the weather did not deter these young men. Brandishing snow-shovels, they set to the task of clearing away a section of snow and ice so they could begin preparing for the 2013 spring season.
Lauerman Field is a great facility, but we knew we wouldnt be able to shovel off the playing surface. Our guys cleared away a section by the old high jump pit, just enough space so we could work on passing, rucking, tackling, and 25 meter sprints. The original plan was to clear off much more room, but we were losing daylight, and we asked the players to scale back the plan. To their credit, these guys wouldnt hear of it. If they can keep up that level of dedication, this team could really do something special in the state tournament, which will be in Pulaski in June said coach Dave Hendrick.
The Barbarians draw players from all over the two-county area who want to learn more about rugby. Head coach Dale Lange is a USA Rugby Certified Level 200 Coach. Assistants Dan Vanidistine and Dave Hendrick were recently certified Level 100, and assistant Kyle Johnson is in the process of completing his own Level 100 certification.
That coaching experience will combine with tremendous depth of player experience in 2013. The Barbarians return 11 starters from their 2012 season, and look to benefit this season from strong senior leadership.
Seniors Chase Kazmierkoski, Jesse Felch, Josh Jansen, and Jaz King have a lot of match experience, and were confident that they will set the example of excellence that we need from everyone, added Hendrick.
The Bay Area Barbarians host the Appleton Dragons on Saturday, April 20 at Lauerman Field at 11am. Admission is free and concessions will be available.
We cant thank our community enough for their support! said Coach Hendrick. The match against the Appleton Dragons will be a great showcase of Wisconsin High School Rugby. Any high-school or home-schooled athlete interested in learning about rugby is welcome to come check us out. We practice on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at Lauerman Field, behind the Middle School in Marinette, from 4pm to 5:30 pm.
