THE CITY REBORN FROM THE ASHES OF AMERICA'S MOST DISASTROUS FOREST FIRE
Tales from the old-timer
Where is this Bay of Green Bay?
I have lived most of my 88 years around here and feel I know the area pretty well. Occasionally I hear a TV or radio announcer talking about The Bay of Green Bay.
I can only guess they are worried that a carload of Packer fans will start roaming around Duck Creek or Suamico looking for Lombardi Stadium, confusing the Bay with the city by that name. The bay itself, an arm or branch of Lake Michigan, extends about 80 miles or so from Green Bay to Escanaba to the north, and has always been named Green Bay, and probably had the name before the City of Green Bay was incorporated.
Outlanders have unofficially named it The Bay of Green Bay and persist in that usage. Those of us who live a few miles from the bay always refer to it as The Bay, and everybody knows exactly what that means. Are references made to The Bay of San Francisco in California, or The Bay of Sturgeon Bay in Door County? Never. Everybody around here knows where the city is, where the Packers hang out, and where our splendid Green Bay is, to our east a few miles away. Dont mess with the names on road maps or in the Atlas maps of this area!
