5 Games In 5 Days Marinette Registers 3 Straight Wins To Open Busy Week On Bay Ball Diamonds
The Marinette Marines notched a trio of victories to open a 5 game week of Bay Conference baseball action. Marinette (3-2) swept a doubleheader from New London Monday 3-1 and 4-2 then rallied for an 8-7 home win over Shawano Tuesday.
The Marines will entertain Luxemburg-Casco Thursday and Hortonville Friday before heading to Oconto Falls Monday and a repeat date at Hortonville Tuesday.
Sweep Over Bulldogs
Getting a pair of complete game pitching performances from senior right-handers Jake McMahon and Derek Klegin, the Marines opened a busy five-game week with a sweep of host New London Monday 3-1 and 4-2.
In the opener, McMahon fanned seven and scattered three while the nightcap saw Klegin need only 83 pitches to get the 4-2 win.
Our pitching was very good and gave up just three runs total in the doubleheader. Our defense was excellent and we hit the ball better in the second game. It was a very good way to start the week, Marinette coach Dave Francour said.
McMahon was the difference in the first game, allowing just three hits, fanning seven and walking one. Jake was very consistent giving up just one walk and striking out seven. He threw about 90 pitches total which isnt bad for a seven-inning gam, Francour added. Offensively, we got four hits off of a left hander, but did what we had to do to win.
Klegin singled and scored on a two-out single by Jacob Swenson in the opening frame before New London knotted things up in the bottom of the inning thanks to a double from Kevin McClone.
Marinette tacked on solo runs in the third and fourth innings to claim the win. In the third, Klegin walked, stole second and moved to third on a sac bunt by Austin Wright before scoring on a two-out double by Aaron Benson.
Cody Tessmer got aboard on an error in the fourth inning, moved to third on a pair of wild pitches before crossing the plate on a single from McMahon.
The home team in game two, Marinette saw Klegin unload 83 pitches and combine a nice curve ball and changeup to keep the Bulldog batters off balance.
Derek did a nice job, mixed up his pitches and threw a lot of strikes. We fell behind early but then rallied for the win, Francour said.
New London got to Klegin for a run in the first frame as Matt ott singled and scored on a ground out.
Marinette answered in the bottom of the frame thanks to their top two batters as Klegin singled and Wright followed with a run-scoring double.
marinette took the lead for good in the second as number eight hitter Ty Bebo ripped a triple with one out and raced home off a single from Quentin Ellie. Two wild pitches sent Ellie home for a 3-1 edge.
Nathan Kallestad singled, stole second and scooted home on singles by Swenson and Tessmer in the third for a 4-1 spread.
New London pushed across its final run of the game in the seventh as number nine swinger Dylan Lathrop got aboard following a strikeout and scored on singles by Ryan Wolf and Hunter Muthig.
Marines Bang Out 9 Hits
In 8-7 Win Over Shawano
Forced into extra innings, the Marines overcame a 5-2 deficit to turn back visiting Shawano 8-7. Marinette rallied for a 6-5 lead in the fourth on singles by Jacob Swenson, Tessmer, McMahon and Ellie before watching Shawano get even on a home run off the bat of Josh Carlson in the fifth.
Walks to winning pitcher Austin Wright, Kallestad and Swenson along with a fielders choice put the Marines up 7-6 heading into the 7th. Unfortunately they couldnt hold the lead as Shawano used a walk to Chase Henning along with two errors and a wild pitch to get even.
With the score deadlocked heading into the bottom of the 8th, the Marines rallied for the win on walks to Wright and Kallestad along with a two-out single off the bat of Swenson.
Klegin, Swenson and McMahon lashed two hits each for the Marines.
Wright, the third Marinette hurler, earned the win with 3 innings of one hit ball. Ty Bebo worked the first 3 innings and Aaron Benson two frames before Wright took over.
