Bulldogs Open M-O Play With Pair Of Victories

Beat Coleman And Titans; Wausaukee Coach In 200th Win

After getting sidetracked by Mother Nature for nearly three weeks, the M-O Conference finally got its softball season underway.

And what a start it was for the Peshtigo Bulldogs and their new coach Tom Christensen. Peshtigo opened diamond play with a 9-5 win over Coleman Monday then trounced Lena-STAA Tuesday 9-1 for a 2-0 league start.

Elsewhere around the M-O circuit, Wausaukee (2-0, 1-0) edged Gillett 4-3 after beating Crandon on Saturday 18-5 for coach Sue Stoltenberg’s 200th career coaching win.

League play will resume Thursday with a full round of games along with doubleheaders slated for Monday, April 29.

-Monday’s Results-

Peshtigo Knocks Off

Improving Coleman

The Coleman softball team, after suffering through a down year last season, appears to be making progress as the Cougars put up a good fight against a tough M-O opponent in the Peshtigo Bulldogs in early season action on Monday 9-5.

But despite a good effort from the Coleman squad, the Peshtigo girls picked up a lot of offense on their way to the 9-5 victory with four players hitting for a pair of RBI each. Shannen Ganter, Dani Zahn, Mazie Reif and Ryleigh Russell each knocked in two runs to get the win.

For Coleman, Asphin Ruiz tallied two RBIs while Faith Baldwin, Brooke Pashak, Janae Engels and Krisi Rickling each knocked in a run in defeat.

Gillett Powers

Past STAA/Lena

The Tigers got a gem of a pitching performance from Jessica Anderson, who went the whole game for Gillett, striking out 14 while giving up just seven hits, on their way to a 14-9 win over STAA/Lena. Carli Woodke led the offense for the Tigers by connecting for hits on four of her six at bats. Rebecca Shroeder got three hits in the he game while teammate Kara Brennan notched two.

For STAA/Lena, Melissa Bushmaker had a pair of hits to pace the Wildcats. Kayla Boye pitched 12-strike out game and gave up 12 hits in defeat.

-Tuesday’s Results-

Bulldogs Pound STAA

The Peshtigo Bulldogs got a four-RBI outing from Maizie Reif and another two runs batted in apiece from Shannen Ganter a nd Dani Zahn as they cruised to a 9-1 win over the visiting Cavalettes.

Kayla Vanlanen knocked in the game's only run for STAA.

Rangers Edge Tigers

Wausaukee's Bethany Gabriel knocked in a pair of runs and Lauren Edlbeck got things done once again on the mound with 11 strikeouts as the Rangers slipped past the Gillett Tigers at home by a final of 4-3.

-Non League Results-

Rangers Top Crandon

18-8 In Milestone Outing

With Wausaukee head coach Sue Stoltenberg's win total sitting at 199, the Rangers decided to go ahead and pick up number 200 in dramatic fashion.

Wausaukee's Lauren Edlbeck faced 24 batters last Saturday en route to her team's 18-8 win over the visiting Crandon Cardinals, one that put coach Stoltenberg at the double-century mark for career wins. Edlbeck struck out six and walked three as she gave up just six hits. The junior Wausaukee pitcher also tallied a pair of hits, one of which was a double, and knocked in a run.

Crysta Clark notched four hits for the Lady Rangers; Sara Wickman had two hits and a pair of stolen bases; Kaylor DeLaet had two hits, both doubles. Kendra Backhaus added another two hits to the offensive outburst and Veronica Shaw picked up a pair of RBIs.
