THE CITY REBORN FROM THE ASHES OF AMERICA'S MOST DISASTROUS FOREST FIRE
Bernice Liz Schaal, 89, passed away on Sunday, April 21.
Born on Nov. 25, 1923 in the Town of Hintz to the late Herman and Martha (Jensen) Luebke, she married Cyril Zip Schaal on Aug. 10, 1940.
After their marriage they farmed for many years in the Suring/Breed area and then the family moved to Gillett where she was the chief telephone operator. In 1958 the couple moved to Mountain where they raised their family and she became Postmaster for the Mountain Post Office for 20 years. Many remember her playing softball well into her sixties where she was called Granny. A member of the Tabor Lutheran Church, she was a member of the Ladies Aide for many years.
Survivors include three children, Dale (Judy) Schaal, Ann (Gerald) Pagenkopf and Kim Tassie (Keith) Williquette; 14 grandchildren; countless great and great-great-grandchildren; a daughter in law, Geraldine and her son; three sisters-in-law; a brother-in-law and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Zip; a sister, Sylvia; three sons, Bruce, Lon and Ike; a son-in-law, John ONeil and a granddaughter, Megan.
The family will celebrate her life on Saturday, April 27 at Tabor Lutheran Church, Mountain. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. Pastor Paul Scheunemann will officiate and following the service, she will be laid to rest with her husband in Mountain Cemetery.
