Suring Sweeps Regional Honors

Seniors Gerndt And Christensen

Claim Triple Wins To Lead Way

Sparked by triple wins from seniors Stormy Gerndt and Cody Christensen, the Suring Eagles showcased their track talents and depth to capture the Division 3 co-ed regional titles Monday.

The Suring gals pursed 6 first place finishes and totaled 130.5 points to easily outdistance second place Wabeno 109. The boys also took home six top finishes to total 166.5 points, far ahead of runner-up Gillett.

The top four finishers in each event qualified for the D-3 sectional meet at Rosholt on Thursday, May 23. Field events begin at 3:15pm with running competition at 4pm. The top four sectional finishers will make their way to the WIAA state meet at UW-LaCrosse May 31 and June 1.

Gerndt Keys Suring

Championship Run

With Gerndt stealing the show in the jumping events, the Suring gals turned 6 first places, a second and two thirds into the regional title Monday. All Gerndt did was claim three individual titles and run a leg on the first place 400 relay squad.

Jumping is no problem for this Eagle as Gerndt won the high jump at 5-feet, long jump 16’5 and triple jump with a leap of 33’7.5.

In the 400 relay, Gerndt hooked up with Carly Christensen, Darian Bowman and Az VanBellinger to turn in a winning time of 55.21.

Suring got more gold in the shot put as Brooke Gauthier unloaded a winning heave of 36’5.25 to nip Gillett throwers Missy Peterson (35’9) and Taylor Kohls (33’9).

The final gold for Suring came in the 800 relay as Christensen, Bowman, Breanna Tienor and VanBellinger turned in a time of 1:55.89.

Christensen was runner-up in the 200 meter dash at 29.71 for Suring while third place marks went to Gauthier in the discus (102’3) and the 3200 relay team.

Gerndt had plenty of company from M-O competitors on the victory stand as Lena-STAA senior Marlena Wagner captured the 100 meter dash in 14.16 and pole vault (9-feet), Megan Rouer 200 meters (27.93) and Melinda Svejda discus (107’0).

Hope Process was a double winner for Coleman in the hurdles, claiming the 100 meters in 17.43 and 300 in 49.33. Both races saw Process top Gillett senior Kathryn DeJung who turned in times of 17.77 and 52.24.

The lone win for Crivitz was picked up by Theresa Orlando in the 400 (1:02.43) while Niagara saw senior Jenna Carlton claim the 800 in a time of 2:34.95. The Badgers relay teams were first across the finish line in the 1600 and 3200 events.

Christensen Has Hand

In 4 Golds For Eagles

With Cody Christensen leading the way, Suring pocketed 6 first place finishes to go along with three seconds and a trio of thirds to claim the team title.

Christensen captured both hurdle events, turning in a winning time of 17.16 in the 110 and 43.22 in the 300.

Add in a leap of 19’2.5 in the long jump along with running a leg on the first place 800 relay team with a time of 1:325.83 completed his successful day. Joining Christensen in the relay were Creo VanBellinger, Dan Sweda and Jay Tienor.

Tienor, another one of those very talented three-sport Suring seniors, claimed the 100 meter dash in 11.85 to nip Ben Fischer of Crivitz (11.91).

The final gold medal for Suring came in the 400 relay where Luke Runge, Blake Strehlow, Sweda and VanBellinger teamed up to run 48.06 and edge Crivitz (48.12).

Second place medals for Suring came from VanBellinger in the 200 (25.59), Tienor high jump (5’10) and Strehlow in the shot put (45’11). Third place efforts were recorded by Runge in the 110 hurdles, Schaal discus and the 1600 relay team.

Gillett was the number two team in the final standings at 113.5 points and earned 4 first place finishes. Shane Anderson, a strong distance runner, claimed the 800 in 2:03.45, David Rosenlund 3200 (11:14.19), Clint Long discus (138’01) as well as the 3200 relay foursome of Rosenlund, Jacob Kasten, Colin Weiss and Anderson with a time of 8:47.77.

Thanks to a big performance from junior Ben Fischer, Crivitz finished third with 109 points. Fischer won the high jump (5’10) and triple jump (39’15) while claiming second in the 100.

Pole vault ace Jake Wiedemeier easily won at 12-feet with fellow senior Treven Gezella second at 10-feet. Tyler Murray keyed a 1-2 finish in the 400 meter dash at 56.48 with Adam Slaby second (56.71).

Niagara earned a pair of gold medals as Jordan Zawada was first in the 200 (24.68) as was the 1600 relay crew of Zawada, Joe Swanson, Ian Kawetschanky and Nate Moll with a time of 3:42.53.

Coleman’s only first place mark came from CJ Pillath in the shot put (49’8.75).
