Cougars (15-1) Head Into Playoffs On Winning Note

The defending state champion Coleman Cougars will take a 15-1 record and a 14-game winning streak into their WIAA post-season opener on Tuesday, May 28. Coleman earned a first round bye as the top seed and will host the Laona-Wabeno and Crandon winner.

Recently voted the number one team in the latest Division 3 state polls, the Cougars registered a pair of wins this past week, topping Stephenson 6-1 and Packerland Conference tri-champion Gibraltar 9-1. A Tuesday clash against Algoma was rained out.

“This is the first time in school history that we have been ranked number one. It is an honor, shows some respect for our program and the kids have worked hard all season to get there. I hope they continue to play that way in the playoffs,” Coleman coach Kent Casper said.

Sawinski Hurls Gem

To Beat Stephenson

Jake Sawinski hurled a six inning four-hitter Thursday afternoon as Crivitz blanked Stephenson 11-0. The righthander fanned 8 and walked just one batter during his mound stint.

Taking a 1-0 lead into the fourth inning, Crivitz erupted for 6 runs then added 2 more tallies in the fifth and sixth frame.

Cody Wolf sparked the 13-hit Crivitz attack with 4 safeties, including a pair of doubles and a triple while Dominic Basso added a single and double. Jeremy Kralovetz added a double.

Quentin Lukasik took the loss with 4 innings of 7 hit and 7 run ball before Ricky Chaney worked the final two innings. The pair walked 1 and fanned 3.

Alex Starzynski hit a triple for Stephenson, Chaney and Eddy Becerra doubles.

--Friday’s Results-

Coleman Takes Care

Of Stephenson 6-1

Making the most of 9 hits, Coleman built up a 6-0 spread after 5 innings to knock off visiting Stephenson Friday 6-1. Derek Marquardt and Blake Margis socked out two hits each for the Cougars. Margis and Alex Stodola drove in a pair of runs each and Marquardt scored twice.

Marquardt singled in the first inning and scored on a two-out single by Blake Margis. In the fourth frame, Mason Mergener singled, Dexter Karban doubled, Stodola came through with a two-run single and Nick Sailer a RBI hit.

Coleman’s final two runs came in the fifth as winning pitcher Trevor Seewald singled, Marquardt launched a triple and Blake Margis a RBI single.

Seewald worked 5 innings and allowed no runs on 3 hits with 3 strikeouts. Jackson Margis and Alex Stodola got the call for one inning of relief each.

-Crivitz Tripped Up

By Norway 5-4

Southpaw AJ Garcia scattered 8 hits over 6 innings but it wasn’t enough as Crivitz was clipped by host Norway Friday 5-4. Garcia fanned 3 and allowed 3 earned runs during a 95 pitch effort.

The Wolverine hitters slapped out 8 hits, including two each from Parker DeLosSantos and Dominic Basso. Jake Sawinski and DeLosSantos ripped doubles for Crivitz.

Crivitz fell behind 4-0 in the third inning but managed to close the gap to 4-3 in the fourth. Colton Lange and Basso singled while Jed Nelson added a hit one out later. All three runners raced home on a double by DeLosSantos.

In the 7th inning, DeLosSantos walked and motored home on a double by Sawinski.

Deadlocked at 4-all heading into the bottom of the 7th, Norway saw Austin Grayvold blast a double then scoot home on a bunt from Taylor Bonetti.

--Saturday’s Results-

Cougars Pound Out 15

Hits To Top Gibraltar

Hosting tri-champion Gibraltar of the Packerland Conference Saturday, the Cougars battered a pair of hurlers for 15 hits in cruising to a 9-1 win. Coleman scored 4 times in the third inning then added 2 more runs in the fourth and 3 in the sixth to win going away.

Leading the Coleman attack was winning pitcher Derek Marquardt with 3 singles and 3 runs scored, Blake and Jackson Margis added 2 hits and 3 RBIs each, while Mergener, Karban and Alex Stodola chipped in with two hits each.

“We hit the ball really well and got some solid pitching from Derek and Mason again. The defense came up with some nice plays as we continue to get ready for the tournament,” Coleman coach Kent Casper said.

Marquardt hurled 4 innings of 3 hit/one run ball to earn the win while Mergener fanned 3 over the final 3 frames.

In the 4 run 4th inning, Coleman sent 9 batters to the plate and punched out 6 hits. Marquardt, Mergener and Blake Margis (RBI) got things started with one-out singles, Jackson Margis added a two-run safety while Stodola (RBI) and Mitch Woulf followed with hits.

Trevor Seewald reached to open the fifth inning and was joined on the sacks by Marquardt (walk). After Mergener whiffed, Blake Margis lashed a two-run single.

Coleman’s final 3 runs came in the sixth on 4 hits...singles by Marquardt, Mergener, Karban and Jackson Margis.

-Bulldogs Bopped Twice

In Home Tournament

The annual 3-team Peshtigo Bulldog round robin baseball invitational wasn’t very good for the home team as they fell 6-1 to Sevastopol in the opener and 10-1 to Wittenberg-Birnamwood. The other contest saw Wittenberg-Birnamwood defeat Sevastopol 7-2.

In the opening loss to Sevastopol, the Bulldog offense produced just 3 hits and didn’t get on the scoreboard until the 7th inning. Tom Quigley tallied the lone run as he got aboard on a throwing error, moved to third on a wild pitch before heading home on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Darius Dohl.

Matt Borkovec worked 5 innings and gave up 6 runs on 8 hits with 2 walks and 4 strikeouts. Trevor Bero pitched the 7th frame.

Austin Krohn and winning pitcher Drew Tanck lashed two hits each.

In the 10-1 loss to Wittenberg-Birnamwood, Peshtigo tallied just 3 hits....singles by DJ Messenger, Bero and Jake Veness.

The Bulldogs did threaten in the opening frame as Messenger made his way to second base following an error, but then tried to score on a ground out off the bat of Brendon Thomas. Messenger never made it as he went airborne and was tagged out.

Peshtigo fell behind 4-0 in the third then watched W-B jam the plate for 6 runs on 4 hits in the sixth to win going away.

Bero got the starting call and worked 2 1/3 innings before giving way to Dakota Keller and Brendon Thomas. The trio walked 4 and struck out 7.

-Monday’s Results-

Peshtigo Knocked Off

By Oconto Falls 10-4

Nine hits weren’t enough for Peshtigo Monday afternoon in suffering a 10-4 loss to host Oconto Falls. The Bulldogs saw Oconto Falls score 4 runs in the second and fourth innings to take control at 8-1.

Messenger, Thomas and Dohl punched out two hits each for Peshtigo while Koronkiewicz and Dohl added doubles.

Down 10-1 heading into the 7th inning, Peshtigo pushed across 3 runs on 4 hits...singles by Bero, Messenger, Thomas and Dohl.

Dakota Keller started for Peshtigo and gave up 7 runs on 6 hits over 4 innings before Borkovec and Bero added relief help.

Brandon Anderson slugged two hits and scored 3 runs for Oconto Falls while Colton Giese chipped in with 2 hits.

Hunter Magnin allowed 4 hits over 6 innings to earn the mound win before Matt Fourniere ran into trouble in the 7th yielding 3 runs on 5 hits.

-Crivitz Topped By

Stephenson 3-2

In a mild surprise Monday afternoon, the Stephenson Eagles scored three runs in the 7th inning to turn back host Crivitz 3-2.

Crivitz senior righthander Cody Wolf held the Eagles in check for 6-plus innings allowing two hits, both by Matt Hanson, while fanning 11.

The Wolverines broke a scoreless affair in the third inning as Wolf singled, moved to third on an outfield error and scored when Parker DeLosSantos saw his liner glance off the glove of the shortstop.

Crivitz upped the lead to 2-0 in the fifth when Wolf scored for the second time. Drawing a walk with one out, Wolf stole second and scored on an errant throw to third base.

Wolf was sailing along on a shutout until the 7th when Stephenson struck for 3 runs and the win. Alex Starzynski and Hanson lashed one out singles, the third for Hanson. Wolf used a pop up back to the mound for the second out only to see things fall apart. Arzack Brown and Andrew Dahlberg ripped run scoring singles with Brown scoring from first on a mishandled throw and a 3-2 edge.

Down by a run, the Wolverines tried to rally in the 7th but to no avail. Jed Nelson drew a leadoff walk and Wolf reached on a bunt single. With two runners on, Parker DeLosSantos bunted but Stephenson pitcher Ricky Chaney fired to third base to force out Nelson.

Following a dropped infield fly pop up, Chaney got Spencer Schwartz to fly out to second to end the game.

Chaney earned the win allowing 2 runs on 3 hits with 8 strikeouts and 5 walks.
