Slate Lemery Softball Tourney For June 7-8
The annual Shaun Lemery Memorial Softball Tournament will be held on June 7-8 at Higley Field in Marinette. This is the eighth year for the tournament, which honors the memory of Shaun, who was diagnosed with leukemia in April 2005, while raising funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. He lost his courageous battle with the disease on June 7, 2006.
In addition to donating to LLS, proceeds from the tournament have been given to local families who are dealing with cancer or other serious health problems, Bay Area Cancer Center and St. Vincent's Hospital. Also, improvements at Higley Field, including a new scoreboard, top rail for the fences, a new bleacher and a new scorer's box have been funded in whole or in part by funds from the tournament.
The softball tournament will have 21 teams competing in a round robin, seeding themselves into single elimination. Each team will play a minimum of 3 games.
New to the tournament this year will be women's volleyball. Teams will compete in a round robin on Saturday while the men's softball tournament is being played. Tournament organizers are in the process of constructing a volleyball court to be used for the games. Volleyball teams can still be registered by calling 906-290-1527.
A special performance by the local band Cydonia will be from 7 to 10 p.m Saturday.
