Coleman, Wausaukee Host Finals Marquardt Tosses One-Hitter In 7-2 Win Over Crandon; Rangers

Rout NEW Lutheran In 5 Innings

The defending state champion Coleman Cougars rode a brilliant one-hitter from senior righthander Derek Marquardt to a 7-2 win over previously unbeaten Crandon Tuesday in the semifinals of the Division 3 regional.

The victory improves Coleman to 17-1 on the year as they will host Oconto today at 4pm in the title game. Oconto is the only team to have defeated the Cougars this year, that coming on April 20 by an 11-4 score. Oconto, the number two seed, gained a berth in the finals with an 8-1 whipping of Crivitz.

In Division 4, the Wausaukee Rangers banged out 13 hits to rout visiting NEW Lutheran in 5 innings 13-zip. Now 9-6 on the season, the Rangers will entertain Gresham, a 7-5 victor over Sevastopol at 4:30pm.

The results weren’t as good in D-2 where the Marinette Marines concluded a 13-8 season with a 3-1 semifinal loss to number two seed Notre Dame. A lack of offense hindered Marinette’s post-season chances managing just two hits. Notre Dame will host Seymour on Wednesday, a 6-1 upset winner over top seed Clintonville.

The sectionals are slated for Tuesday, June 4 with Division 2 in Denmark, D-3 at Coleman and D-4 at Tigerton. The WIAA state meet is slated for June 11-13 at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton.

Marines Slip Past

Oconto Falls 2-1

After shutting out Oconto Falls 5-0 and 11-0 during the regular season, the Marines were looking for an easy contest in the D-2 opener Friday. It was far from that. Seems that the visiting Panthers had upset on their mind before falling 2-1.

Marinette made the most of 3 hits, including a game winning walk-off single by Nathan Kallestad in the bottom of the 7th inning. Kallestad’s single drove in Aaron Benson, who reached on an error and ended up at second base. After Jacob Swenson whiffed, Kallestad stroked a 1-2 pitch into leftfield to end the game.

Oconto Falls went up 1-0 in the first inning as leadoff hitter Colton Giese singled and scored on a single by John Thompson.

The Marines got even in the fourth when Derek Klegin walked, raced to third following a stolen base and errant throw before scoring on a double off the bat of Benson.

Jake McMahon registered 12 strikeouts and walked 2 during his route going performance.

Hunter Magnin, who did not pitch in the regular season setbacks, yielded 3 hits, walked 2 and fanned 5.

Bulldogs Blanked

By Seymour 4-0

Being held to two hits, Peshtigo (8-7) never mounted any offense in suffering a 4-0 loss to host Seymour Friday. A lack of offense has been Peshtigo’s achilles heel all season and it came to the front in the D-2 opener. The only hits for Peshtigo were singles by Derek Koronkiewicz in the second innings and Jake Veness in the 7th.

Defensively we played really well and turned three doubles plays. Borkovec had a diving stop to throw out a runner from second while Thomas charged a bunt and got a got a first, Peshtigo coach Pat Robbins said. Offensively we struggled, which has been our weakness all season.

Seymour hurler Nate Zeise set down 9 Bulldogs on strikes with one walk during a 7-inning effort.

Seymour pushed across 3 runs in the second inning on three hits...singles by Zeise and Brandon Berg along with a double off the bat of Phil Nickelson. The Thunder tallied their final run in the 6th as Austin Hower walked and scored on a groundout.

Jordan Berth was tagged with the loss giving up 4 runs on 5 hits with 5 walks and 2 strikeouts. Zach Neumann got the call for the final inning.

Jordan threw okay, got out of trouble a couple of times as some walks hurt him. Seymour is a good hitting team and hit some balls hard that fortunately were right at our guys, Robbins added.

Marinette Tripped Up

By Notre Dame 3-1

Managing just two hits, both by leadoff swinger Klegin, the Marines saw their season come to a halt in the regional semifinals at Notre Dame 3-1. Klegin ripped a first inning double then added a third inning solo homer to account for all of Marinette’s offense.

Meanwhile Notre Dame scored solo runs in each of the first 3 innings to pull out the win. With one out in the opening frame, Charlie Rotherham was hit by a pitch, moved to third on a single by winning pitcher Dominick Golubiewski and scored on a groundout by Matt Duvall.

The Tritons were back at it in the second frame as designated hitter Nick Zacharias singled, advanced to second on a bunt before scoring on a single by Alex Brault.

One swing of Riley Christensen’s bat took care of the final Notre Dame run in the third with a leadoff homer.

Golubiewski fanned 10, walked two and gave up those 2 hits to Klegin in a complete game win.

Austin Wright was tagged with the loss yielding 3 earned runs on 5 hits with one walk and 4 strikeouts.

Wolf Allows 3 Hits

As Crivitz Cruises

Past Gillett 9-Zip

Senior righthander Cody Wolf made his final appearance on the Crivitz field a memorable one with a complete game 3-hitter in a 9-0 tournament win over Gillett (2-10). Wolf was in control from the opening pitch and finished with 8 strikeouts and one walk.

The Wolverines backed up Wolf’s mound gem with a 10 hit attack, including 3 by Parker DeLosSantos and two each from Wolf and Jake Sawinski.

Crivitz gave Wolf all the support he needed in the first inning with 3 runs on 3 hits. The first 3 batters got aboard as Wolf and DeLosSantos singled while added a double. In the third inning Wolf was hit by a pitch and scored on a sac fly by AJ Garcia.

Three more Wolverines raced home in the fourth as Jed Nelson and Wolf singled with two outs while DeLosSantos added a run scoring double.

The lead grew to 9-0 in the sixth as Wolf walked, DeLosSantos singled and Spencer Schwartz added a two-run double.

Derek Zahn took the loss for Gillett being battered for 9 runs on 10 hits.

We had a young team and got some valuable experience this year...started two freshmen on the infield, one senior in the outfield and the rest juniors. Looking forward to a better season next year with better weather and more experience, Gillett coach Pat Nelson said.

Marquardt Dominates

As Coleman Rolls 7-2

With Marquardt limiting Crandon (11-1) to just one hit, Coleman had no trouble claiming a 7-2 regional final win. The hard throwing Marquardt fanned the side in the first and fourth frames while recording a pair of strikeouts in the second, third and fifth innings. The only hit allowed by Marquardt was a fifth inning single from losing pitcher Hayden Krueger.

Marquardt was a force at the plate as well, lashing out 3 hits and scoring twice. Trevor Seewald and Nick Sailer added two safeties each.

Coleman took a 2-0 lead in the opening inning as Seewald singled and Marquardt doubled. After Mason Mergener walked to load the bases, Dexter Karban singled and Jackson Margis punched out a sac fly.

The lead grew to 4-0 in the second inning as Seewald got aboard on a fielders choice, Marquardt singled while an error and fly ball scored the runs.

Crandon registered its lone run in the third as Morgan Krueger reached on an error by third sacker Blake Margis and scored on another error.

Singles off the bats of Alex Stodola, Sailer, Seewald and Marquardt put Coleman in front 6-1 in the third inning.

Both teams managed one run in the 6th as Mergener walked and scored for Coleman.

Oconto Ousts

Wolverines 8-1

A 3-run homer by designated hitter Bryce Bostedt in the 6th inning broke things open as Oconto knocked off visiting Crivitz 8-1. The Blue Devils scored 5 runs on 5 hits in the uprising to take control.

Oconto got to losing pitcher AJ Garcia for two runs in the first inning as leadoff hitter Tanner Pillsbury doubled while Grant Frazer, Kyle Krueger and Teague Camps singled.

In the second inning, Blake Campshure singled and scored on a bunt by Brandon Bahde for a 3-0 lead.

Crivitz managed to close the gap to 3-1 in the fifth when Parker DeLosSantos drew a one out walk and scored on singles by Schwartz, Garcia and Dominic Basso.

That was as close as Crivitz would get as Bostedt’s big blow keyed a 5-run sixth and padded the Blue Devil lead to 8-1.

Garcia took the loss yielding 7 runs on 11 hits over 5 1/3 innings before Jake Sawinski registered the final two outs.

Oconto starter Trent Trepanier escaped trouble all game allowing one run on 6 hits and stranding 9 Wolverines. Reliever Trent Mehlberg was lights out with 6 strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings of work.

The Cavaliers fell behind 1-0 in the first inning and 3-0 in the third. The lone run for the Cavaliers came in the 6th as Brennan Bardowski walked and scored on a double by Dom Ramirez.

Craig Kowalkowski paced the winners with 2 singles, two runs scored and a pair of RBIs.

Wausaukee Whips

NEW Lutheran 13-0

Dominating at the plate and in the field, the Rangers had no trouble routing visiting NEW Lutheran in the D-4 semifinals Tuesday 13-0. Wausaukee pounded a trio of NEW hurlers for 13 hits, including 3 hits and 5 RBIs by winning pitching Beau DeLaet.

Eddie Self, Aaron Schlies, Cole Lewandowski and Russell Smith all chipped in with 2 hits each. Schlies also drove in a trio of runs.

DeLaet singled and scored in the first inning while in the second frame 5 Rangers crossed the plate on 5 hits. Schlies ripped a two-run triple and Lewandowski a RBI single.

The Wausaukee lead grew to 10-0 in the third frame as 4 more runs were put on Wausaukee’s side of the scoreboard. Smith singled, Zach Struve was hit by a pitch before Self walked with 2 outs.
