Tough Start For Marinette Legion

Notching just one win in three outings, the Marinette Legion gang had a tough start to the 2013 season. Marinette got knocked off by DePere 8-4 Friday in the season opener then fell to Southwest 2-0 Sunday in a contest played at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton. The good news for Marinette came Tuesday night in a 10-3 victory over Northern Door.

Now 1-2 on the season, Marinette will take part in the Father’s Day tournament in Green Bay meeting highly touted Ash-Port Thursday at 7:30pm, Escanaba Friday 2:30pm and the Green Bay Shockers Saturday 9am. The busy slate continues with home doubleheaders on Tuesday against DePere 17-U and Wednesday versus White Lake. Both twinbills are set to start at 5:30pm.

Marinette Topped

By DePere 8-4 In

Season Opener

Despite banging out 9 hits, Marinette came out on the short end of an 8-4 score to open the Legion season Friday night. Marinette never took the lead in the game, but did manage to get even at 4-all in the fourth inning.

A couple of defensive gems by DePere prevented Marinette from having big innings. The best of the gems came in the third when centerfielder Koltz made a diving catch of a sure double off the bat of Scott Eldredge.

Starting pitcher Luke Kelly, fresh off the Lakeland College squad, was battered for 8 runs on 10 hits over 4 1/3 innings. Reliever Austin Wright hurled 2 2/3 scoreless innings, walking one and fanning a pair.

DePere scored single runs in each of the first 4 frames, including a solo homer by Paul Koltz to rightfield in the third.

Down 3-0, Marinette pushed across two runs in the third inning as Derek Klegin lashed a leadoff single while Kelly and Austin Belonga followed with singles.

Two more Marinette runners crossed the plate in the fourth on just one hit. With two outs, Cody Tessmer and Klegin were beaned. Eldredge drove in Tessmer with Klegin crossing the plate on an errant relay throw.

That was as close as Marinette would get as DePere tacked on 4 runs in the fifth and never looked back. One out doubles off the bats of Logan Devroy and John McCormick along with a single by Brad Pierce took care of 3 runs with the fourth scoring on a dropped third strike.

Garrett Williams earned the win scattering 9 hits over 7 innings with 5 strikeouts and 2 walks.

The toughest out for Williams was Klegin, who lashed two singles, a double and scored twice.

Offense Struggles In

2-0 Sunday Setback

Pitching was certainly the name of this game as Marinette could only muster up 3 hits in a 2-0 setback to Southwest Sunday. The game was played at Fox Cities Stadium following the Timber Rattlers contest.

The local Legion gang never solved the pitching mystery of Southwest hurler Matt Zacharias, who twirled a nifty three hitter, fanned 5 and walked just one batter. Klegin punched out two hits for Marinette while Eldredge added the third.

Jake McMahon was nearly as effective for Marinette, allowing 5 hits and one run over 5 innings on the mound. McMahon finished with 8 strikeouts and walked 4 batters. Ty Bebo got the call for the sixth frame yielding one run on one hit with a walk and two strikeouts.

After 4 scoreless frames, Southwest pushed across the only run it would need in the fifth. Jake Schoenholz walked, moved to second on a bunt before scoring on a single by Ben Heyman.

Southwest tacked on a big insurance tally in the sixth as Bebo walked Taylor Egelhoff, who scored on a single by Gus Eastman.

Marinette did threaten in the opening inning as Klegin singled and Eldredge got aboard on an error with no outs. Zacharias didn’t panic and used a pop up, strikeout and grounder to thwart the rally.

Belonga walked and moved up 90 feet on a bunt in the fourth but was stranded while in the fifth, Klegin and Eldredge stroked two out singles but were left on base.

Marinette Turns 10

Hits Into 10-3 Win

Over Northern Door

A 7-run third inning was all that Marinette needed to turn back Northern Door Tuesday 10-3. Austin Belonga gave up 3 runs on 8 hits over 5 innings to earn the mound win before Klegin pitched the final two frames.

Trailing 3-0 heading into the third, Marinette sent 11 batters to the plate and scored 7 runs on 5 hits. The rally started as Kiefer Powers walked and Cody Tessmer was hit by a pitch. Klegin followed with a single, Eldredge hit into a fielder’s choice before Kelly, Belonga and Benson lashed consecutive singles. After a walk to McMahon, Bebo blasted a two-run double.

Marinette was back in the scoring mode in the fourth as 4 straight two-out walks to Kelly, Belonga, Benson and McMahon upped the lead to 8-3.

The final two tallies came in the fifth when Marinette took advantage of two errors, a walk to Powers and singles from Kelly and Belonga.

Bebo, who turned in a couple of defensive gems at second base, paced the 10-hit Marinette attack with two singles and a double while Kelly, Belonga and Benson tacked on two safeties each.

Tanner Biwer was tagged with the loss being battered for 7 runs on 7 hits over 3 innings. Reliever Giesseman, who also lashed a trio of hits, walked 4 in less than an inning of work while Jack Brennan pitched the final 2 1/3 frames.

Northern Door saw Brennan open the game with a single and score on a single by Giesseman. A leadoff walk to Drew Tanck and double by Brennan upped the lead to 2-0 in the second while singles by Biwer, Giesseman and Matt Hecht produced a run in the third inning.

Mavericks Sport--1 col

After reeling off 4 straight wins to open the season, the Mid-County Mavericks suffered their first loss Monday afternoon 8-3 at the hands of Gladstone. Earlier in the week, the Mavericks (4-1) topped Kingsford 7-6 while sweeping the Marquette Reds 9-1 and 13-3.

Mavericks Edge

Kingsford 7-6

Taking the win in dramatic fashion, the Mavs plated a run in bottom 7th to claim a walk off win over the Kingsford Blues Thursday. Ricky Chaney lead off the deciding at-bats with a walk, followed by Eddy Becerra, who also coaxed a walk. Alex Starzynski laid down a perfect bunt to reach on an infield single next. Chaney then raced home on a passed ball for the winning run.

The Mavs began their scoring in first when Starzynski drew a two-out walk and then scored on a Matt Hanson RBI single.

The Blues evened score in second as Austin Murdock and Brian Johnson walked. Hanson, the Mavs starter struck out the next two but another walk and wild pitch allowed Murdock to score.

Mavs came back in bottom 2nd with four runs. With one out, Andrew Dahlberg singled and then TJ Raether walked. After a groundout, Jake Maki drilled a single to right field to drive in a pair of runs. Chaney followed with an RBI single and later scored later scored.

After a scoreless third and fourth innings, Kingsford brought three across in the top of the fifth. Brandon Kowalkowski, the Blues' starting pitcher, singled. After a pop out to first, Craig Qualley ripped an RBI double. A mishandled fly ball allowed another run in before Cole Tengerdahl and Murdock followed with RBI singles.

After a scoreless sixth, Kingsford scored a pair of runs to tie things up in the seventh. Tengerdahl singled, Murdock doubled and Cole Michaud later drove him in with a single.

Hanson, Quintin Lukasik and Becerra all pitched for the Mavs in this one. Becerra relieved in the seventh to get the win as he got out of a bases-loaded jam. Kowalkowski, Justin Grailer and Craig Qualley pitched for Blues.

Mavericks Rout Reds

In Doubleheader Sweep

The Mid-County Mavericks had a big day in Daggett Saturday as they took a pair from the Marquette Reds, 9-1 in the opener and 13-3 in the nightcap.

As for game one, pitcher Nate Rasner made his first start on the mound for Mid-County. After giving up a run on three singles in the first inning, Rasner scattered three singles and walked two over six scoreless innings to get the win. The Mavs came up with four runs in the bottom of the first off of Reds' starter Dylan Martin on doubles by Jake Maki, Jeremy Koller, and Andrew Dahlberg, along with singles from Eddy Becerra and Rasner.

Mid-County scored in all but one inning. Leading the Mavs, Arzack Brown was two-for three with two doubles; Koller was two-for four with a double and two runs scored; Andrew Dahlberg was two-for three with a double.

In the second game, three Mavs pitchers combined to check the Reds on six hits. Bryce Tharp, 14, made his Mavs debut, throwing two scoreless innings and striking out four. Alex Starzynski worked two innings, allowing a run on two hits while striking out four. Jesus Becerra, 13, also debuted for the Mavs, pitching the final inning. He allowed two runs and struck out two. Reds starter Allen Hutchens took the loss.

The Mavs scored four in the first, one in the second, and broke it open with eight in the third. Dahlberg, Eddy Becerra, Starzynski, Matt Hanson, and Tharp each scored twice. Hemstock again led the Reds going 2-2 with a double.

Mavericks Fall

To Gladstone

Giving up 8 walks and committing 4 errors proved to be too much for the Mavericks to overcome Monday in losing to Gladstone 8-3. Gladstone built up a 5-0 lead in the fourth inning to take control.

Ricky Chaney was tagged with the loss yielding 5 runs on 5 hits with 3 walks over 4 innings before Max Hanson closed out the game.

Jeremy Koller slapped out 3 hits for the Mavs, including a double.

Cody Frazer topped Gladstone with a single and double, Christian Tackman added a triple.

Hunter Garling earned the win with 4 innings of 2 hit ball, walking 5 and striking out 6.
