Doubleheader Split Caps Busy Week For Marinette

Talk about a busy week!

Playing 7 games in six days, the Marinette Legion team came up victorious three times to run their season readout to 4-6.

Competing in the Father’s Day Tournament in Green Bay, Marinette fell twice to Ash-Port 9-3 and 6-1, lost to Escanaba 3-0 while chalking up wins over the Green Bay Shockers 9-2 and the Appleton Doubledays 2-0.

Marinette capped the busy week by splitting a doubleheader Tuesday with DePere 17-U, losing 5-3 before prevailing in the nightcap 5-4.

The busy diamond slate will continue for Marinette as they host White Lake in a doubleheader Wednesday at 5:30pm, Oconto Falls Thursday 7:30pm, Neenah in a twinbill Saturday starting at noon, Peshtigo Tuesday at 7:30pm before heading to Oconto on Wednesday, June 26 for a 5:30pm contest.

Marinette Topped

By Ash-Port 9-3

Going up against highly touted Ash-Port in the Green Bay Southwest Father’s Day tourney opener Thursday, Marinette came up on the short end of a 9-3 score. Ash-Port, which is a combination of Ashwaubenon and BayPort High Schools, pushed across 4 runs each in the second and fifth frames to take control.

Marinette turned a trio of double plays and did not get on the scoreboard until the fifth inning with 2 runs. Jake McMahon singled, Ty Bebo walked and Kiefer Powers got aboard on an error. With the bases loaded, Beau DeLaet lofted a sac fly which Klegin followed with a single.

In the seventh inning, Klegin walked, Scott Eldredge singled and Luke Kelly added a RBI ground out.

Austin Wright took the loss giving up 9 runs (6 earned) on 8 hits with 5 walks and 6 strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings of work.

Jack Violetta was nicked for 4 hits and fanned 8 over 5 2/3 innings.

Marinette Blanked

By Escanaba 3-0

Mustering up three hits, Marinette lost 3-0 loss to Escanaba Friday. Ben Kleiman fanned 4 and walked two during a complete game effort.

Marinette watched a runner get gunned down at the plate in the opening inning as Austin Belonga doubled and Scott Eldredge singled. The only other hit for Marinette came in the third inning when DeLaet got aboard.

Kelly took the loss allowing 3 runs on 6 hits over 4 2/3 innings before Bebo got the call for the remainder of the game.

Escanaba scored 3 times in the fifth inning as David Fallish doubled, Nick Vandermissen and Brandon Punzel singled while Hunter LaMarche capped the rally with a double.

McMahon, Marinette

Defeat Shockers 9-2

Jake McMahon threw his strikeout pitch past 6 batters and walked one as Marinette topped the Green Bay Shockers 9-2 Saturday.

Aaron Benson belted a first inning three-run homer for Marinette, bringing in Kelly (walk) and Belonga (single). In the fourth inning, DeLaet and Kelly blasted doubles for a 4-0 lead before Marinette tacked on 5 runs in the sixth. The key blows were a two-run double off the bat of Klegin and a two-run single by Nathan Kallestad.

Klegin punched out 3 hits for Marinette in the win.

Belonga Hurls Gem

In 2-0 Marinette Win

Belonga was certainly the star of this game as the righthander allowed just one hit in knocking off the Appleton Doubledays 2-0. Belonga finished with 5 strikeouts and walked 3 during a complete game effort.

Marinette pushed across its first run in the third inning as Klegin doubled, DeLaet put down a bunt and Eldredge launched a sac fly.

In the 7th inning, Marinette added an insurance run as Benson singled, Kallestad followed with a sac bunt, Bebo walked while Austin Wright and Klegin ripped singles.

Klegin (3-3) and Benson (2 hits) sparked the 6-hit Marinette attack.

Marinette Knocked

Off By AshPort 6-1

Meeting AshPort for the second time in the tourney on Sunday, Marinette suffered a 6-1 setback. The winners pushed across 4 runs in the third inning and 2 more in the sixth to win going away.

Bebo (2 2/3) started for Marinette allowing 2 hits and 5 walks while Klegin gave up 4 hits over the final 3 1/3 innings.

Marinette’s lone run came in the seventh as Klegin walked, DeLaet and Eldredge added singles.

Marinette collected just 4 hits off winning pitcher, Hunter Pahl, two by Eldredge. Pahl fanned 4 and lashed a two-run single in the fourth inning for AshPort.

AshPort finished second in the tournament after falling to DePere 8-5 in the championship game Sunday.

Marinette Splits

With DePere 17-U

The opener wasn’t to Marinette’s liking as they fell to DePere 17-U Tuesday 5-3.

Marinette never led in the contest, but managed to knot the score at 1-1 in the second inning when Belonga ripped a double and headed home on grounders off the bats of Benson and Nathan Kallestad.

Klegin singled and scored on a double by Scott Eldredge in the third inning for a 3-2 deficit.

Austin Wright was tagged with the loss, yielding 5 runs on 6 hits with 2 walks and 4 strikeouts.

Zak Sanders earned the mound win allowing 3 runs on 10 hits.

Klegin slapped out 3 hits for Marinette while Eldredge and DeLaet chipped in with doubles.

The visiting team in game two, Marinette saw Kallestad double and score following an infield single by McMahon and an error for a 1-0 lead in the second.

DePere got even on singles by Paul Grout, Beau Mommaerts and Jake Buboltz before Marinette took the lead for good with a run in the fifth. Wright got aboard on a fielder’s choice and made his way around the bases following a couple of errors.

Holding that slim 2-1 edge, Marinette added 3 more runs in the 7th as DePere struggled with flyballs. With the bases loaded and no outs, Kelly sent a short fly to right which was lost in the lights scoring two runs. Eldredge crossed the plate with the third tally after a couple of DePere throwing errors on the play.

On top by a more comfortable 5-1 margin, Marinette nearly threw it away in the bottom of the 7th. After starting pitcher Beau DeLaet got leadoff batter Connor Rutherford to ground out, he couldn’t locate the strike zone. Two walks ended his stay on the mound as McMahon was brought in to end the game.

Unfortunately McMahon struggled as well, giving up a two-run single and then walking in a pair of runs for a 5-4 score. That was enough for coach Brian Lesandrini, who gave the ball to Klegin with one out and two runners on base. Klegin fanned Reece Lade for the first out then coaxed Deruyter to pop up to second sacker Ty Bebo to end the game.
