Coleman Duo Tops M-O Baseball

Seniors Key 30-0 League

Mark And 3 Outright Titles

Once again, the Coleman baseball team's dominating performance in conference play has been reflected in the voting amongst M-O coaches for the all-league team of 2013.

Picked as co-players of the Year, Derek Marquardt and Mason Mergener wrapped up their Coleman high school diamond careers with top honors. Picked to the first team as an outfielder, Marquardt sported a .419 average at the plate while also pitching his way to a 4-0 record from the mound. Mergener was a unanimous pick to the first team as a hurler with a 5-0 record but proved he could also get it done on offense as he posted a .419 average with the bat.

The MVP award is the second straight for Mergener, who shared the honor with his brother Mike in 2012.

Coleman had a pair of juniors highlight the infield of this year's M-O first team as Dexter Karban and Trevor Seewald both got the nod. Karban made a habit of crushing the baseball to the tune of a .572 average and teammate Seewald wasn't far behind at .558.

Joining Marquardt in the outfield from the Cougars' roster was Jackson Margis, a junior with a .416 average over the 2013 campaign. Making the second team from Coleman were sophomore catcher Alex Stodola, as well as freshmen infielders Nick Sailer and Blake Margis. Mitch Woulf earned honorable mention.

The Wausaukee Rangers were also well represented on the all-conference squad with three athletes making the grade.

Junior Beau DeLaet is back on the elite team and a quick look at his numbers do a good job of explaining why. DeLaet sported a .492 batting average this year, notched 32 RBIs, scored 30 runs and held a .579 on base percentage.

"Beau has been our leading hitter as well as our big game pitcher," said Wausaukee coach Paul Moser. "His leadership and enthusiastic approach to the game has helped our team immensely."

Fellow junior and defensive specialist Eddy Self has been selected from the Rangers' roster to play in the outfield thanks to a .371 batting average, 21 runs scored and a .473 OBP.

"Eddy's defense in the outfield has been unmatched by anyone we have seen this year," Moser said. "The ground he can cover has taken away countless hits."

Wausaukee's Aaron Schlies, a sophomore infielder, got the nod after going .414 at the plate with 23 RBIs, 32 runs scored and a .447 OBP.

"Aaron has been a middle-of-the-order hitter for us throughout the year and has had many key hits," said Moser. "He has played beyond his years not only with his hitting and defense but also on the base paths."

Other Rangers being recognized were junior Brennan Gabriel, picked to the second team infield; Zach Struve and Cole Lewandowski, both senior outfielders to the second team as well as Russell Smith, a freshman getting an honorable mention.

The Crivitz Wolverines have a pair of players from their 2013 lineup making the all-conference grade this year. Senior catcher Parker De Los Santos made the most out of his first year behind the plate, committing just one error while hitting .450 in conference action with three doubles and a triple. He struck out only three times in 2013 and had an OBP of .600.

Senior Cody Wolf rounds out the All-M-O infield by virtue of his .420 batting average, six doubles and a triple. He had 14 RBIs and was charged with just seven errors working the infield as a four-year starter for the Wolverines. Wolf also had a good season on the mound, throwing 44 innings with a 3.51 ERA, 58 strike outs and just 17 walks.

Sophomore Jake Sawinski made the second team, as did junior outfielder Spencer Schwartz. AJ Garcia got recognition as an honorable mention.

Peshtigo's Jordan Berth went from an honorable mention pick in 2012 as a sophomore to a first team pitching selection to this year's squad. Berth threw 34 innings for the Bulldogs, fanning 54, walking 19 while giving up just 16 hits and seven earned runs. The junior's lone loss on his 4-1 season came against Coleman.

“Jordan is really a great kid and works hard. He is probably one of the hardest throwing pitchers in the league and improved his curveball a lot,” Peshtigo coach Pat Robbins said.

Fellow junior mound ace Zach Neumann made the second team, as did senior infielder Derek Koronkiewicz. Senior Trevor Bero was picked as an honorable mention.

Other Timesland athletes selected to this year's All-Conference team as honorable mentions include Jeremy Cibulka and Derek Zahn of Gillett as well as Kiefer Powers and Dom Ramirez of Lena/STAA.
