Town Peshtigo Okays Purchase Of Fire Truck

The Town of Peshtigo Fire Department will soon be getting a new fire truck. At their regular monthly meeting Tuesday, June 18 the town board unanimously accepted the recommendation of Supervisor Pat Ravet, based on information collected by Fire Chief Mike Folgert, and approved purchase of a Red Power Diesel foam pumper truck from Fremont, Wisc. for $85,478.

The Wisconsin firm was second lowest bidder, but Ravet explained Fremont is a Wisconsin company that they have worked with before and received good service, and the vehicle selected comes equipped with everything the fire department wants.

Chief Folgert explained one big difference is the model they are buying includes a foam pump that is compatible with the type of foam the department already uses, and is a $4,000 pump compared with a $400 version.

At its May meeting the board had approved sale of the old Dodge Tanker truck and agreed to proceed with getting prices on replacement equipment. Bids are now being accepted for the old truck and they will be opened at the next board meeting, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 17. Several individuals have expressed interest in buying it, Folgert said, adding it’s old, but it runs good and has no rust. Town Chair Herman Pottratz commented that somebody is going to get a bargain.

Folgert reported during the past month the department had seven calls. Four were for vehicle accidents, of which two were on Hwy. 41 and two were on Rader Road.

Pottratz asked how payments were coming in on the new policy of charging for Fire Department calls to vehicle accidents. Town Treasurer Vilas Schroeder checked the records and said so far $4,800 has been received in response to those billings, but there are lots of bills out there that people just aren’t paying.

Ravet noted this is a bad year for wood ticks, and urged pet owners who bring their animals to the vet for tick treatments to get their shots at the same time so they can get the animals properly licensed and make things a lot easier for (Constable) Oren Ninnemann.

The Plan Commission has been working for about two years on some changes needed to the Zoning map and the Zoning ordinance, and it is now ready to be adopted. However, it first must go to a public hearing, which the board scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 23.

Town Clerk Clarence Coble said the earliest possible date in accord with legal notice requirements would be Thursday, July 11. Pottratz wanted to avoid having the hearing too soon, as he felt people should have time to review the ordinance and check over the zoning maps before the hearing. The documents will be available for viewing at the Town Hall during Coble’s open hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Anyone can speak at the hearing, but Coble said anyone unhappy with the way their property is designated on the zoning map should fill out a zoning change request form in advance of the public hearing. The forms are available at Coble’s office. Coble noted he will be gone the last week in July and the first two weeks of August.

By unanimous vote the board agreed to sell a 15-foot wide strip of town owned property off Hale Road to Rob Burke for $250 to provide access to his otherwise landlocked property. Burke is to pay any back taxes as well as all legal expenses connected with the sale. The board had agreed at its meeting on May 21 to place an add stating request for the purchase and location of the property. Burke submitted the only purchase offer.

In other action at the May 21 meeting the board appointed Coble, Wayne Gerondale and Jim Devcich as alternate members of the Board of Review.

They reappointed Alex Dudka and Grace Pennings to three year terms on the Fire Commission, and appointed Joe Wilke to fill the remainder of the term of Bill Johnson when he retires. Wilke’s term will end on April 30, 2015.

Road bids were opened on May 21 from Biehl Construction and Northeast Asphalt, Inc. After review, the board voted unanimously to award the Oakridge Road project for $22,725 and two Krause Road projects, one for $114,261.50 and the TRIP portion for $50,519.50 to Northeast Asphalt, Inc. They awarded the $15,895 Bonnie Lane Project to Biehl Construction. Low bids awarded totaled $203,407.

At the June 18 meeting, Supervisor Mark Monnette reported all the preparation work on Oakridge Road, including the new turnaround, is completed. The turnaround area fits within the right of way that the town already owned, so no property had to be purchased. He said everything is ready now for Northeast Asphalt to come in and pave it, probably in July.

The town road crews has been doing alot of brushing work, and has picked up alot of garbage from roadsides, Monnette said. They found mostly tires and furniture, but also found some boxes with names on them, and there will be some follow-up action.

Supervisor Denise Wiedemeier reported the recycling center has been very busy. She said the fork lift was broken, but has been repaired. The company contracted to come in and haul tires away had been informed the site is not open every day and that they should call ahead when they were coming. They called recently about 10 minutes before they were due to arrive. She was at work, but called on an obliging member of the town crew who promptly went to the site and unlocked the gate.

Pottratz mentioned that the Century Bike Ride will again have a stop on the grounds of the Peshtigo Town Hall. He said the bike riders are good people who always clean up the grounds when their event is over.

The board unanimously approved all existing beer and liquor licenses for renewal. They also approved Vern Cramer as agent for REMARC, LLC, to operate in the building that was formerly Bayer’s Bar. Ravet asked if Cramer planned to have entertainment, and no one knew for sure, but Monnette assured him Cramer runs his existing golf course business in the Town of Grover very well, and said he has never heard a complaint about it.

Pottratz said the fence around the old town landfill is in badly deteriorating condition, with fence posts falling down, and suggested simply removing it. He was told the fence was put up because ATVs were tearing up the clay cap on the landfill, but it was informally decided they should take the fence down before it falls down, and if there is again a problem they might need to put up a new fence, which they would have had to do in any event.
