Crivitz Sister Cities Plan for 2014 Visit

Crivitz Area Sister Cities appears to again be an active organization. A delegation from Crivitz, Germany will visit the United States next year to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the official Sister City relationship between Crivitz in Wisconsin and Crivitz in Germany.

President Pam Kanikula, on a recent trip to Germany, delivered to the Burgermeister of Crivitz, Germany an invitation from the local organization, signed by Village President John Deschane, inviting Sister Cities members to visit in early September of next year, and the invitation was accepted. So far only three persons have signed up, but with the trip more than a year in the future, Kanikula was told the actual number will be about 30.

As with past visits, the visitors will stay with host families here, just as Crivitz, Wisconsin visitors to Germany in past years stayed with German families. The Sister City relationship between the two communities that share a common heritage began when Crivitz, Germany issued a blanket invitation to anyone from their offspring Crivitz, Wisconsin to help celebrate their 750th anniversary. Crivitz, Wisconsin was named by early settler Fredrich Bartels in honor of his home town in Germany.

Marge Brown, who was elected treasurer at last month’s meeting, reported she has filled out the delinquent annual reports and said it will cost $85 to get the group reinstated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation. She had the bank account restored to active status to end a $4 monthly charge for maintaining an inactive account.

The problems arose because of untimely deaths of some top local officers, after which the organization had become inactive for a while. Some records were lost or misplaced.

Available records were tuned over to Brown, but she said with the materials she received the check book is irreconcilable. There is a $58.25 unrecognized deposit entry and check number 1059 was made out to an unrecorded payee and for an unrecorded amount she has been unable to trace. Brown said the account is unauditable due to missing records and lack of officer continuity. Because of this, she said she would assume responsibility, effective May 22, 2013 for the $3,308.72 balance-of-record on that date and going forward.

President Kanikula reported the Germans are considering a bus trip to the Western US as an add-on for their stay here, which was proposed as five days, followed by the trip to Mall of America, North Dakota and Yellowstone National Park.

The American group questioned the practicality of such an ambitious itinerary, and suggested because of unreliable fall weather at high altitudes the German visitors should start with the visit to Yellowstone and work east, including the Black Hills of South Dakota, for a total 14-day trip with hopefully the final five to seven of them in Crivitz.

Several families have expressed interest in being hosts but more will be needed. The Americans discussed group activities versus host/guest activities. There will need to be at least welcome and farewell events as group activities. Other group activities suggested include tours of Lambeau Field, for which a German-speaking guide may be available. Activities on previous trips include a bus tour of waterfalls in the county, a pontoon boat ride on High Falls Flowage, a water ski show, pontoon boat rides and picnic on Lake Noquebay, and participation in local parades and holiday celebrations, which will not be available this time. Some ideas for side trips included a Native American Pow Wow, Kohler Center and Bavarian House tours. Members were asked to think of activities, find out as much as possible about cost and availability and bring their lists to the next meeting, which is set for 6:30 p.m. Monday, July 22.

Although the amount needed is not known because the number of guests is not known, the members generally agreed some fund raising will be needed.

Gene Walters said he got the Crivitz flag project going with about $3,000 of seed money he collected from local businessmen. In total the group has 32 unsold flags. It was decided the flags as well as some souvenir items Kanikula brought back from Germany will be stored at the village hall, and can be sold by village officials, with the money going to Sister Cities. Deschane was authorized to contact local gift shops to see if they will sell flags on consignment for $50 each, of which Sister Cities would get $45 and the merchant $5.

Deschane suggested soliciting funds and selling flags while supervising the bouncy houses as volunteers at the approaching Fourth of July celebration.

Bob White and Shirley Prudhomme will work from noon to 2 p.m.; John and Candy Deschane will work from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and Marge White and Pam Kanikula will work the 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. shift.

Establishment of committees and recruiting new members was tabled until the July 22 meeting.
