Losing Ways Continue For Peshtigo Legion Gang

The losses keep on piling up for the Peshtigo Legion gang which fell to Oconto twice 6-4 and 10-1, Mid-County Mavericks 7-3 and Marinette 13-0.

Sporting a dismal 0-8 diamond mark, Peshtigo will travel to Green Bay Shockers Sunday at noon before entertaining Daggett on July 1 at 5:30pm.A Wednesday home clash against Menominee was postponed due to a field conflict and will now be a doubleheader on July 9 at the Red Wave Field.

Peshtigo Edged

By Oconto 6-4

Scoring two runs in the bottom of the 7th, Peshtigo forced extra innings before falling to visiting Oconto Wednesday 6-4. Southpaw Zach Pickle made his Legion debut memorable with 5 strong innings allowing 3 runs and fanning one batter.

We had 13 players with everyone playing a half game. Pickle was dominating in his first Legion start, coach Geoff Sparks said.

Oconto pushed across a third inning run when Tanner Pillsbury walked and scored on a single by Teague Camps.

A leadoff walk to James Brabant got Peshtigo even in the fourth as Tom Quigley and Marcus Sharkey followed with singles.

Brian Bahde walked, Kyle Krueger ripped a RBI double and Bryce Bostedt put Oconto on top 3-1 in the fifth.

Peshtigo closed the gap to 3-2 in the sixth when Brabant got aboard on an error and on a two-out double off the bat of Derek Koronkiewicz.

Camps singled to lead off the 7th inning and scored on a groundout before Peshtigo pushed across two runs in the bottom of the frame to get even at 4-all. Danny Payne singled with one out and Marcus Behnke walked while Andrew Majewski drove in a run with a single.

Two Peshtigo errors, walk to Pillsbury and single from Camps put Oconto up for good 6-4 in the 8th.

Facing a deficit again, Peshtigo went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 8th.

Tyler Trepanier, who was the winning pitcher in the state title game, picked up the mound victory.

Bad Inning Results

In 10-1 Oconto Loss

Taking on Oconto for the second straight day, Peshtigo was within 3-1 before the host team exploded for 7 runs in the 6th to win going away 10-1.

Matt Borkovec singled and made his way home on a double by Derek Koronkiewicz for a 1-0 Peshtigo lead.

Oconto got even in hits half of the first as Kyle Krueger singled and scored then tacked on single runs in the third and fifth frames to go up 3-1. Oconto sent 12 batters to the plate in the sixth, pushing across 7 runs on 4 hits, 3 errors and two walks.

Zach Neumann started for Peshtigo before giving way to Pickle in the sixth.

This was a completely different story then Wednesday as Oconto used that big inning to take control. We had some errors in the inning that hurt us, Sparks said.

Peshtigo Falls To

Mid-County 7-3

Enjoying one of its best starts to a game, Peshtigo struck for 2 runs in the first inning and owned a 3-0 edge heading into the bottom of the fifth before falling to Mid-County 7-3.

In the first frame, singles by Majewski, Borkovec and Koronkiewicz resulted in one run. After a pickoff by catcher Matt Hanson for the second out, Koronkiewicz scored on an infield throwing error.

Borkovec and Trevor Christophersen matched pitches until the 5th, when Peshtigo tacked on another run to go up 3-0. Majewski again led off with a single and Koronkiewicz coaxed a walk. On a two strike count, a mishandled pickoff throw allowed Majewski to come around to score and Koronkiewicz ended up at 3rd. Christophersen fanned the next hitter to avoid further damage.

The Mavericks started their comeback in the 5th as Brennen Gabriel doubled to right center, Christophersen followed with a tough hop infield single, scoring Gabriel. Eddy Becerra added a soft single and Cory Mikus laid down a bunt base up the 3rd base line. With the bases loaded and no outs, Christophersen and Becerra each scored on wild pitches while Hanson drew an one-out walk and kept running to second. Jeremy Koller followed with a high hop grounder to second driving in Mikus. Koller reached on an error, and Hanson hustled home on the play.

The Mavs plated two more in the 6th when Gabriel lashed a leadoff single, Mikus drew a two-out walk and Alex Starzynski roped a triple down the right field line.

Borkovec took the loss giving up 9 hits and fanning 6 over 6 innings.

Christophersen set down 4 batters on strikes, walked 3 and yielding 6 hits.

Gabriel paced the Mavs with 3 hits and 2 runs while Majewski went 3-4 with 2 runs for Peshtigo.
