Martha Verba

Martha “Marty” (Wood) Verba, 89, of Daggett, Mi. passed away quietly in her home on Thursday, June 27.

Born Oct. 28, 1923 in Chicago, Ill., the 9th of 10 children born to the late George and Freida (Brei) Wood, she attended Kitty Corner Grade School and in 1942 graduated from Palatine, Ill. High School.

She moved to Chicago during World War II where she worked as a long distance operator for Illinois Bell Telephone. While in Chicago she met Gordon Lee Verba of Daggett, Mi. and the couple was married on Jan. 27, 1945, celebrating 61 years. He preceded her in death Oct. 9, 2006. They made their homes in Chicago, Palatine and Mount Prospect, Ill. She was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, Palatine, where she served faithfully with the Women's Guild, Loyal Order of Moose, Barrington Ill., serving on the entertainment committee and also served as secretary of the Art League of Mount Prospect, Ill.

They bought their farm in Daggett in 1971 and after her husband’s retirement built their family home in Daggett, where they spent many happy times with family and friends. While residing in Daggett, she was a member of the Daggett Moravian Church. She served as vice president of the Ladies Auxiliary American Legion Post #43. She enjoyed dancing, gardening, oil painting, ceramics, fishing, hunting and playing pinochle with the Jolly 8. She was a leader in both the Blue Birds and Camp Fire Girls organization and was involved with the 4 H Club.

She is survived by two daughters, Linda (Ralph) Hayford of Hoffman Estates, Ill. and Sandra Lee (Roy) Cunningham of Barrington Hills, Ill; a son, Gary Verba of Daggett, Mi.; a son-in-law, O'Dean Klutts of Marengo, Ill.; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Bernice Russo and Reta Bradley, both of New Jersey and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Pamela Jean Klutts; a granddaughter, Terri Lynn Hayford; four brothers, George, Raymond, Fredrick and Charles Wood and two sisters, Violet Etzkorn and Vernett Sheetz.

Visitation was Saturday, June 29 after 4 p.m. at Anderson Diehm Funeral Home, Stephenson, Mi. Visitation continued on Sunday, June 30 from 12 noon until time of the funeral service at 1 p.m. at the Daggett Moravian Church, Daggett, Mi. Pastor Gary Straughan officiated and burial followed in the Bethesda Cemetery, Daggett, Mi. A memorial fund has been established for the Daggett Moravian Church.
