MUCH TO CELEBRATE
No matter how concerned we may be about the future of our great land, no matter how worried we may be about the direction it has been taking, the fact remains we Americans have much to celebrate.
Back in 1776, when our nations forefathers risked their lives and fortunes to break away from England, this continent was already home to a whole new way of thinking. The settlers who came here, starting with those who had arrived on the Mayflower 150 years earlier, were a hardy breed willing to give up the comfort of the lives they knew to find the freedom to live the lives they wanted to live.
They accomplished much because they risked much.
The new nation they invented was based on Christianity, but allowed personal freedom of worship. Note: They never indicated there should be freedom from worship.
Starting when those Pilgrims stepped off the Mayflower at Plymouth Rock, the new land gave settlers something their European forefathers had not enjoyed: The right to sink or swim by their own efforts. Freed from the constraints imposed by their lords and masters, the settlers who worked hard and used their God-given intelligence generally prospered and were allowed to reap the fruits of their own labors.
There were more inventions and more technical progress in the 200 years after America was born than there had been in the preceding 2,000 years, maybe more progress than there had been since man stepped out of his cave and invented fire.
Why? Chalk it up to freedom. Chalk it up to the right to sink or swim by your own efforts.
Given that, why are so many today willing to give up that personal independence in favor of a nanny government that attempts to take care of everything for us?
Lets celebrate our nations independence by demanding that it remain free!
Cant help but wonder what our forefathers would say if they could see today what we are doing to the wonderful form of government they created for us!
WORDS OF PATRIOTS
Have we forgotten the words of John Adams? You will never know how much it cost the present generation to preserve your freedom! I hope you will make good use of it!
Or Thomas Paine, who cautioned: Those who expect to reap the blessings of freedom must, like men, undergo the fatigue of supporting it.
Samuel Adams said, back when the Revolution was being formed: If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace. We seek not your counsel, nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you; and posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.
Those words were true then and still are today. If we would rather than bask in comfort, slaves of a nanny government that takes our freedom from us while pretending to fill our needs, if we are willing to surrender our morals in favor of political correctness, then we are unworthy of the sacrifices those great men made for us, and before long our nation will pass into history as an experiment that failed.
ON THE SOAP BOX
Were told not to stereotype, to treat everyone fairly. Profiling is not treating people fairly, were told.
But when one segment of the population regularly commits crimes against another segment, isnt it reasonable to expect them to keep doing it? If the Moslem population doesnt like being stereotyped, maybe they should quit acting the part. They dont have to dress and act so theyre easy to pick out. Just as we discriminate against gang members for wearing gang colors, isnt it fair to discriminate against a segment of the population that openly clings to the philosophy that infidels (thats us Christians, folks) must either give up our religion and join theirs, or be killed?
Not talking here about physical characteristics people are born with, but about modes of dress and behavior by which they choose to set themselves apart.
Back in the day when nuns wore habits and priests and other members of the clergy wore cassocks in the course of their daily lives, we had a right to expect them to behave somewhat better than the rest of us mortals.
When judges don their black robes, we expect them to act judicially.
Thus, when a person chooses to wear the dress of a Muslim, particularly when theyre in this country, it is reasonable to assume they are asserting that is who and what they are, and they want the rest of the world to know it.
Do we have reason to fear them, particularly the male of the species?
Do we have reason to fear gang members who wear their colors and carry switchblades?
Acts of terror committed by dedicated Moslem males against the infidels with whom they share planet Earth are nothing new. They date at least back to the Crusades and the pirates along the Barbary coast. Only difference is we used to call them Moslems and now they call themselves Muslims. Same difference. They havent gotten any more civilized or more tolerant of other religions, particularly Christians and Jews. Things have not improved in the last half century, in fact they have gotten a bit worse.
The following chronology was sent in by a friend. Its quite scary.
In 1972 at the Munich Olympics, athletes were kidnapped and massacred by Muslim males.
In 1972 a Pan Am 747 was hijacked and eventually diverted to Cairo where a fuse was lit on final approach and it was blown up shortly after landing, all carried out by Muslim males.
In 1973 a Pan Am 707 was destroyed in Rome, with 33 people killed, when it was attacked with grenades by Muslim males.
In 1979, the US embassy in Iran was taken over by Muslim males.
During the 1980s a number of Americans were kidnapped in Lebanon by Muslim males.
In 1983, the US Marine barracks in Beirut was blown up by Muslim males.
In 1985, the cruise ship Achille Lauro was hijacked and a 70-year-old American passenger was murdered and thrown overboard in his wheelchair by Muslim males.
In 1985, TWA flight 847 was hijacked at Athens, and a US Navy diver trying to rescue passengers was murdered by Muslim males.
In 1988, Pan Am Flight 103 was bombed by Muslim males.
In 1993, the World Trade Center was bombed the first time - by Muslim males.
In 1998, the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania were bombed by Muslim males.
On 9/11/01, four airliners were hijacked; two were used as missiles to take down the World Trade Centers and of the remaining two, one crashed into the US Pentagon and the other was diverted and crashed by the passengers. Thousands of people were killed by Muslim males.
In 2002, reporter Daniel Pearl was kidnapped and beheaded by-you guessed it-Muslim males.
In 2012, the embassy at Benghazi was attacked and four Americans were killed - by Muslim male terrorists. (Our leaders in Washington were apparently so embarrassed by this attack perpetrated by their mild mannered friends that they tried to cover it up by blaming the violence on a stupid video and allowing four members of our embassy team there to be murdered.)
And now, the Boston Marathon bombings? Again, Muslim males. Not even any trumped up infidel offenses for them to blame that one on.
Think theres a pattern here to justify profiling? Would our nation have been better off if wed have told that Muslim family no, you cant come here, you fit a dangerous profile?
The Boston Bomber Brothers not only fit the Muslim male profile, our nations so-called protectors had been warned in advance that the pair should be watched because their associates during a visit to their homeland also fit the pattern and were in fact members of a terrorist group or groups.
Instead, the powers that be, to ensure we Americans never offend anyone, particularly any fanatics intent on killing us, have decreed that we must not profile. We must not discriminate. We cannot bar anyone from this country or from our airplanes because they fit the profile of people who regularly try to kill us.
But apparently our nations protectors can spy on the entire population and ignore Constitutional rights, as long as its done without prejudice. Dont bother to sort out the likely suspects. Just monitor everybody. Among other philosophical problems, doesnt that seem like a waste of time and resources?
As the friendly correspondent wrote: Have we Americans completely lost our minds? Isnt it time to tell political correctness to take a flying jump and demonstrate some good old common sense? As the writer of the award winning story Forrest Gump so aptly put it, Stupid Is As Stupid Does.
Definitely agree with his conclusion. Its time for us to stop being stupid under the pretext of being polite!
People who look like the enemy and act like the enemy probably are the enemy!
Its true that the worst of the terrorist breed probably dont dress the part. But keeping out those who do, just as we pre-judge those who wear gang colors, would at least be a start.
ON A KINDER NOTE
Speaking of gang members and profiling, a mild mannered gentleman friend recently bought himself a sort of mini motorcycle. Wearing helmet and goggles with a button-down shirt and tennis shoes, he took it out for a spin. Wanted to show off a bit, you know.
Wow, man, a young buddy told him. You look like an enforcer for Hecks Angels!
GREEK CHICKEN PITAS
Fresh new flavor from the grill. These pita sandwiches take only minutes to cook. Try them with a cucumber relish as another type of Gyro sandwich. Not traditional Fourth of July fare, but very, very worth eating, and they do go well with traditional pasta and Jell-O salads.
4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, about five ounces each
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
2 teaspoons crushed oregano
4 slices peeled sweet onion
2 pita bread rounds, 12-inch size, or four six inch ones
1/4 cup chopped fresh mint
Salt and pepper to taste
Optional: lettuce, diced cucumber, diced or sliced tomato
Rinse the chicken breasts, pat dry, and pound them thin. Spray the onion slices with cooking spray. Brush both sides with lemon juice and sprinkle with oregano, salt and pepper. Light coals of heat grill to medium hot. Spray grates with cooking spray. Set the pita breads on a warm but not hot corner of the grill so they start warming. Put chicken breasts on grill and cook 5 or 6 minutes on each side, turning once. Add onion slices about two minutes later and grill them. (You might want to put the onion slices on a piece of foil so they dont fall through the grill.) If you have pounded the breasts very flat they may be done sooner. When done, transfer the onion slices and chicken breasts to a cutting board and cut into strips. Cut each pita bread in half and into the pocket put some of the sliced chicken breast and some of the sliced onion. Sprinkle on a bit of mint, add your choice of lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers and Sour Cream Sauce. Eat and enjoy.
SOUR CREAM SAUCE
2 cups (16 ounces) sour cream
1/4 cup mayonnaise
4 green onions, finely chopped
1 teaspoon each crumbled parsley, onion powder, garlic
powder and Worcestershire sauce
Salt and pepper to taste
Just mix everything together a little in advance of serving time, and dollop onto the sandwiches as you wish. This is also excellent on thinly sliced grilled pork tenderloin or turkey breasts.
Note: If you prefer, instead of cutting the Pitas in half, just pile the fillings on and fold it over to eat. However, our old landlord in Appleton was from Armenia (now part of Turkey), and his homemade pita breads were always cut in half with the fillings put into the pockets. Done that way, the juices are absorbed so you get to enjoy them rather than have them run off onto your hand. Ed would have been amazed - and probably insulted - to see anyone just pile the fillings on top of his flat breads!
STRAWBERRY MARGARITA SQUARES
Really, really good, especially now, when fresh strawberries are in season. Perfect for Independence Day week, especially if you top each piece with a dollop of whipped cram, a circle of strawberry slices and a sprinkle of fresh blueberries for a red, white and blue look.
1 1/4 cups crushed pretzels
1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter or margarine, melted
1 can (14 oz.) sweetened condensed milk
1 cup mashed strawberries
1/2 cup lime juice
1 tub whipped topping, 8 ounces, thawed (or use 8 ounces
of real cream, whipped, with 1/4 cup sugar)
Mix pretzel crumbs and butter and press firmly into the bottom of a 13x9-inch pan. (You can mix it right in the pan.) Refrigerate until ready to fill. Stir the sweetened condensed milk, strawberries and lime juice gently together in a large bowl until well blended, then gently stir in whipped topping or real whipped cream. Pour over crust. Freeze 6 hours or overnight. Let stand at room temperature 15 minutes before cutting to serve. Garnish with sliced strawberries. Makes 12 servings. To slice easily, run the knife in hot water first.
Thought for the Week: We have this day restored the Sovereign to whom alone men ought to be obedient. Samuel Adams, after the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. Patrick Henry, who did not sign the Declaration but did help formulate the Constitution, had this to say of the new Nation: It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religions, but on the gospel of Jesus Christ. For this very reason peoples of other faiths have been afforded asylum, prosperity, and freedom of worship.
