Redbirds Roll To 7-1

Cody Woods And 2 Relievers

Fan 9, Allow 2 Hits In 7-3

Victory Over Menominee Wed.

The Marinette Redbirds slapped out 14 hits and rode some strong pitching from starter Cody Woods and a pair of relievers to a 7-3 win over the Menominee Storm Wednesday. The midweek win improves the Redbirds to 12-5 overall and a league leading 7-1 readout, 1 1/2 games ahead of second place Channing (5-2).

Elsewhere in Wishigan League action, Peshtigo needed 11 innings to turn back visiting Menominee in a 12-11 slugfest while Gillett was awarded a pair of forfeit wins over Escanaba. Seems the Polecats couldn’t field enough players for a trip to Gillett and decided to forfeit the games.

Games scheduled for this week find Crivitz heading to Marinette Wednesday for a 7:30pm clash, Saturday Peshtigo visits Crivitz at 1pm and on Sunday Peshtigo hosts Crivitz at 1pm while doubleheaders find Gillett at Menominee and Marinette taking the hike to Escanaba at noon.

Marinette Knocks

Off Menominee 7-3

With Cody Woods unloading a pea-sized fastball, the Redbirds cruised to a 7-3 league win Wednesday. The hard throwing Woods yielded two hits and an unearned run over 7 innings while setting 7 Storm hitters down on strikes.

First reliever Todd Olsen needed just 6 pitches for a perfect 8th inning while Jordan Powers gave up 2 runs on 3 walks and two strikeouts in the 9th.

Cody Woods threw hard against Menominee and was in control throughout the game. We had one of our better hitting games up and down the lineup, Redbird boss Nick Brukardt said.

Marinette pushed across its first run in the second inning as Ryan Johnson got aboard an error on third sacker Brian Bell followed by a walk to Steve Oman and a single off the bat of Cully Falkenberg.

Menominee got even in the top of the third on singles by Bell and Matt Jacobs.

The Redbirds regained the upper hand for good in the bottom of the third as Jason Hofer slapped a two-out single and raced home when Ryan Johnson unloaded a RBI double to left center.

Protecting that 2-1 spread, Marinette gained breathing room in the fifth with 4 runs on 5 hits. Adam Francour singled to open the inning then moved around the sacks as Hofer, Johnson and Steve Campbell punched out consecutive one-out singles. Oman was hit by a pitch before Woods aided his own cause with a two-out RBI single.

Leading 6-1, Marinette pushed across its final run in the seventh as Campbell singled and Woods unloaded a two-out run scoring double.

Olsen came on in the 8th and set the Storm down in order getting Ryan Kruse to pop up to short while Bell and Aaron Schroeder added groundouts.

Menominee did manage to rally for two runs in the 9th against reliever Powers. Jacobs and Aaron Pettit drew free passes to start things. Powers then got Sean Budzynski and pinch hitter Billy Betts on strikes, Matt Lund walked and a fielder’s choice grounder by Nate Hofer keyed the rally.

Betts started for Menominee giving up 3 runs on 6 hits over 4 1/3 frames. Reliever Bell was roughed up for 4 runs on 8 hits in the final 3 2/3 innings.

Predators Outlast Storm

In 11-Inning Thriller 12-11

The Peshtigo Predators evened their Wishigan League record at 3-3 in dramatic fashion as they absorbed the best a now 3-4 Menominee Storm team had to offer on Sunday and came out on top 12-11 after 11 hard-fought innings.

The two teams went back and forth in the early innings at East Side Stadium in Peshtigo and the Predators found themselves down a run heading into the bottom of the fifth with the scoreboard reading 4-3. Peshtigo 's Brandon Barrette got his team started in the fifth with a base hit and then advanced to second as Jake Engels watched four straight pitches miss the strike zone and took a free base. This set the table nicely for Peshtigo 's Jerit Zeitler, who, with one out, took the 0-1 pitch for a ride over the fence to give the Predators a 6-4 advantage. Peshtigo got another home run in the sixth, this time from Cody Nielson for an 8-4 Peshtigo lead.

But the Storm responded to the power-hitting display being put on by the Peshtigo squad by doing some slugging of their own in the seventh. Menominee got five runs in that pivotal inning and went ahead 9-8, highlighted by a two-run blast from Brett Edlbeck that left the park, his second homer of the day.

This back and forth resulted in extra innings as both teams struggled to find the offense needed to close the game out. That is, until the 11th frame saw Menominee score two and position themselves to wrap it up only to have Peshtigo 's DJ Koronkiewicz rain on the Storm 's parade by bringing across the game 's winning runs on a clutch base hit in the bottom of the inning.
