Marinette Hosts AAA State Meet

Takes 21-15 Record Into

Opener Against Eau Claire

Despite going two and out in the regional tournament at Green Bay Southwest, Marinette Legion will compete in the AAA state classic July 31-August 4 as the host team. The 8-team, double-elimination diamond affair will feature at least 14 games and the possibility of a 15th contest over 5 days.

The local Legion gang fell to the Green Bay Shockers 3-2 in 11 innings in the regional opener Thursday before getting eliminated by the Appleton Doubledays Friday 6-4.

Marinette will take a 21-15 readout into the state meet and goes up against Eau Claire (27-8) at 7pm on Wednesday, July 31. Other first round games Wednesday pit AshPort and Sheboygan at 10am, Beloit and Kimberly 1pm along with defending state champion Madison Impact and Plover colliding at 4pm.

Action continues Thursday with 4 games starting at 10am, three more contests on Friday, two Saturday and one for sure Sunday.

The last time Marinette hosted the AAA state meet was 2002 when Appleton (35-4) claimed top honors. Under the direction of Rick Kahn, Marinette put together a 26-12 season mark and went 2-2 at the state meet. Marinette beat Eau Claire 5-1 and Genoa City 11-4 to begin state play before falling to eventual champion Appleton 14-11 and RSW 16-12.

Marinette Strands 11

Runners In 3-2 Loss

Failing to capitalize on various scoring opportunities, Marinette came out on the short end of a 3-2, 11-inning loss to the Green Bay Shockers Thursday in the first game of the AAA regional tournament. Marinette owned leads of 1-0 in the third inning and 2-1 in the fifth before falling in the 11th.

The tournament test saw righthander Jake McMahon fan 7, walk one and give up just 6 hits over 9 frames. Handing the ball over to Austin Belonga for the extra innings, Marinette saw the righthander yield one run on one hit with one walk and one strikeout over 1 2/3 innings.

Marinette’s first run came in the third inning as a trio of walks put Derek Klegin at third base with one out. After nearly missing an opportunity to score on a fly ball down the rightfield line, Klegin waltzed home when Luke Kelly drew a bases loaded free pass.

The Shockers got even in the fourth as Brian Wendtland singled, stole second and scored on a sac fly off the bat of Jake Landrum.

Klegin legged out an infield grounder to open the fifth then raced home as Scott Eldredge drilled a run scoring double to rightcenter. After Aaron Benson drew a walk, the Shockers pulled starter Dylan Watzka in favor of another southpaw, Anthony Radloff. The lefty did his thing retiring three straight batters to avoid further trouble.

Wendtland walked and scored on a double by Landrum in the 6th for a 2-2 deadlock.

The Shockers waited until the 11th to pull out the win. Watzka worked Belonga for a two-out walk then scored all the way from first base on a double to the right centerfield gap by Radloff.

Radloff picked up the mound win with 7 innings of two hit ball, fanning 3 and walking 3.

Muster Up 6 Hits In

Loss To Appleton

Marinette saw its regional stay end Friday afternoon with a 6-4 setback to the Appleton Doubledays. Marinette never owned the upper hand in the elimination contest and trailed 4-0 after enduring a two-hour rain delay in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Marinette starter Austin Wright was roughed up for 4 runs on 6 hits, one walk and 4 strikeouts over 3 1/3 innings. Aaron Benson added 3 2/3 frames of 3 hit and one run ball before Klegin gave up one run on 3 hits in the 8th inning.

Facing that 4 run deficit, Marinette finally got on the board in the 7th inning when Belonga blasted a leadoff double and scored following singles by Kelly and Kallestad.

Fielding miscues by Appleton enabled Klegin and Eldredge to get aboard in the 8th inning before heading home on a groundout off the bat of Benson and a sac fly by Belonga.

The final Marinette run was recorded in the 9th inning. With two outs, McMahon and Ty Bebo singled followed by free passes to Klegin and Eldredge (RBI).

Jason Malkowski picked up the pitching victory yielding one run on 4 hits with 2 walks and 6 strikeouts over 7 innings.

Mike Strauss sparked the Doubledays offense with a pair of doubles and two RBIs.
