Dear Editor:

Whatever happened to lawmakers like William Proxmire, Democrat, Senator from Wisconsin who voters elected term after term? As I remember, he was known for two major ideas. Every year he would do research and announce the Golden Fleece Award to Washington’s most wasteful spending project. He was also known to be pro life, placing great value on the life of an unborn child. He would never have accepted the liberal notion that as a baby develops in the womb, it is only a fetus and not a person unless it happens to be wanted. It can be terminated at any time at the wishes of the mother.

Liberals have basically taken over the Democratic Party. They have control of the main news sources. Entitlements have grown exponentially. Millions would not think of voting for any conservative who believes that if we can’t afford a program or project, we shouldn’t do it. Millions do not see the danger of sinking into trillions upon trillions of dollars of debt. Unions across the country have bound themselves to liberal candidates to ensure that their agenda is promoted. One only has to look at Detroit to see the outcome that awaits the whole country if there is no return to responsible government and journalism.

There is a political party that still embraces the ideals of William Proxmire. It is the Republican Party. We need people who share these concerns and ideals to get involved and be a part of the solution. We welcome new membership in the Marinette County Republican Party. Our next meeting is Aug. 15 at 6 p.m. in Wausaukee, downstairs at Newingham’s Restaurant. Join us as we try to do our part to save our country.

Letter to Editor:

In May I purchased a 1929 Ford Model A pickup truck in Memphis, Tennessee. It had been a sales display in a lumber yard for the past 18 years. Just a few weeks ago the seller sent me some photos and a letter he found from the restorer of the truck in Escanaba, Mich. The letter states that the truck was a mail delivery truck in the Peshtigo area from 1920 to 1950. This was totally unknown to us at the time of the purchase, so we decided to do a little research. After speaking to some Peshtigo area historians, it seems a man by the name of Art Millan was a mail delivery person as well as a car dealer in the Peshtigo area during this time and he used the pickup truck. I would appreciate any information anyone could share with me about this man or the truck so I can share the story with everyone at the Historical Days Celebration, where the truck will be in the parade.

To The Editor:

On October 1, The Affordable Care Act ( Obamacare ) takes effect. As most of us know, this law will do nothing to make healthcare affordable and in fact has already increased premiums for most Americans. There are a number of Republican lawmakers in Washington who believe they can slow down or even stop the implementation of this horrible law by passing legislation that will defund the program. They need our help!! Some legislators are on the fence about defunding and it is up to us to get them on the right side. Go to your computer right now and sign the petition to defund Obamacare. The web site is: www.dontfundobamacare.com. Tell everyone you know to do the same. If this monstrosity is not stopped, we will all suffer its debilitating effects on our health and the health of the American economy.

Marinette American Legion Baseball had the privilege of hosting the 8 team AAA State baseball tourney at Pedersen Park last week. It was a huge success! Many factors go into being able to have such an event.

First and foremost, all the volunteers, namely the grounds crew, ticket booth workers, concession and beverage workers, and shirt sellers. Additionally, the announcers, statisticians, people who sold ads for the program, local newspapers, major sponsors, athletic trainer from BAMC and all the fans who turned out.

All the umpires were proficient and the weather was perfect, which helped make for an enjoyable five days of baseball.

Congratulations to Coach Brian Lesandrini, his staff and the local team for a great season.

Thank you, one and all.

Letter to Editor:

Marinette County Taxpayers:

I would like to bring a matter to your attention. In these austere times of budget cuts and state funding cuts, our county officials persist in accruing legal costs, by failing to pay some of its employees, who, by contract, are owed payments to their retiree fund for 2012.

On August 10, 2012, an arbitration hearing was held regarding this matter. The arbitrator, whose findings are “final and binding,” ruled that the employees’ contract was valid for the year 2012. Therefore, the County owed the employees for their portion of the retirement benefit for 2012.

After incurring the cost of the arbitration hearing, the county, not wishing to accept the “final and binding” decision of the arbitrator, refused to make the payments and filed a motion to vacate the ruling of the arbitrator in the Circuit Court in Marinette, WI.

On May 24, 2013, Circuit Court Judge Miron confirmed the arbitrators’ decision; finding the contract valid, thereby requiring the county to refund the payments made to the retirement fund.

After incurring the costs for a private attorney and court costs, in addition to the cost for the arbitration hearing, and still not wishing to make the required payments to employees, the county filed an appeal to the Circuit Court ruling.

On June 6, 2013, the Marinette County Executive Committee met in a closed session to discuss “litigation.” They returned to open session with a motion to obtain another attorney to research the filing of another appeal at a cost of up to $15,000!

After incurring the costs for an arbitration hearing, a private attorney and court costs, additional cost for legal advice and services “up to $15,000,” county officials, still not wishing to make the required payments to the employees, have filed an appeal to the Circuit Court ruling.

As a citizen and taxpayer, I prefer that our dwindling tax revenue be used to provide services for our needy children, the elderly and disabled individuals in our community, as well as maintaining and improving buildings, parks and roads.

I would also hope that we can maintain and attract quality employees to provide these essential services. The expense of court appeals and lawyers contributes to neither the maintenance of, nor the improvement of, the services and conditions in Marinette County.

Bonnie Sweningson,

Peshtigo
