Marinette’s Klegin Selected For State Legion All-Star Game

Sure Glove At Shortstop And A .468 Batter

His statistics flat out speak for themselves. Marinette Legion shortstop Derek Klegin has been making plays at the Legion level since his jayvee days and his tenacious play on the diamond has earned him a spot on the field at Miller Park in Milwaukee on August 18 for the American Legion All-Star Game, playing for the North squad. The Legion star classic will follow the Milwaukee Brewers-Cincinnati Reds Sunday contest which starts at 1pm

"I'm definitely excited to be able to play at Miller Park," said Klegin. "It's a huge honor. It'll be very cool to play on the same field as professionals play on but it's also going to be great to meet some new people."

Back to the statistics that got him there.

Klegin went 65-139 this past season at the plate for a blistering .468 batting average. He scored 41 runs and notched a very respectable 21 RBIs. He slugged 11 doubles and a triple and gave defenses around the North Division headaches with his thievery of bags as he collected 19 stolen bases. Klegin also made a habit of beating out grounders in the infield this season, using tremendous speed to turn close plays at first base, plays that might have ended in an out for other runners, into singles for Marinette.

But perhaps the most impressive stat that emerged from Klegin's 2013 season, before heading to St. Norbert's to play his college ball for the Green Knights, was Klegin's strikeout total for the year.

Opposing pitchers could muster just eight K's against Klegin for all of 2013, a statistical highlight that speaks loudly as to his focus when at the plate.

"I'd have to attribute my hitting ability to my dad," said Derek, whose father Dave is a Post 39 coach and can be found working the first base line during his son's games. "He put in a lot of work with me in the batting cages and taught me to be dedicated enough to go to the cages every other day and take my swings. We do short-distance pitching drills together, where he's standing closer to me than normal to pitch, forcing me to make a quicker decision on whether or not to swing."

Klegin is understandably anxious about taking his place on the grass at Miller Park Sunday but he's taking it all in stride. Appreciating the opportunity and stopping to enjoy his afternoon on his home state's biggest baseball stage are what's important to him right now.

"I've watched him through the years," said Post 39 head coach Brian Lesandrini. "He's certainly put a lot of hard work into his game. He sees the ball very well, a prototypical leadoff hitter. I think he's really developed into a fine athlete and a fine young man off the field."

The 27-player North roster consists of Skylar Anderson of Medford, Michael Berben of Chilton, Brett Bittner of Oshkosh, Aaron Brost of Nekoosa, William Durham of New Richmond, Drew Eastman of Appleton Legion, Dustin Franz of Chippewa Falls, Dominick Golubiewski of Green Bay Southwest, Jake Hartmann of Wisconsin Rapids, Sam Hurt of Eau Claire, Mitchell Johnson of Bruce, Sterling King of Plover, Derek Klegin of Marinette, Jason Lindemann of Sturgeon Bay, Logan Majerus of Shiocton, Logan Mallek of Stevens Point, Phillip Mazzei of Altoona, Brock McDermid of Pulaski, Cole Nelson of Wausau, Bret Neuville of Ashwaubenon-BayPort, Jonathan Nyberg of Tomahawk, Garrett Pagel of Merrill, Jonathan Quigley of Menasha, Ryley Rosenfeldt of Hortonville, Collin Seubert of Marathon, Nick Spurney of Manitowoc and Nate Zeise of Seymour.

North coaches are Luke Suchon of Stevens Point; Chad LaShock of the Appleton Doubledays and Adam Fox of Freedom.

The South roster includes Nate Verhage of Madison Impact, Bill Percival of Wisconsin Dells, Brett Krahn of Jefferson, Nick Schmitt of Beaver Dam, Aaron Roth of Beloit, Brandon Hughes of Janesville, Caleb Fernholz of Cashton, Colin DeBoer of Waupun, Colton Andersen of Genoa City, Aaron Bischoff of Horicon, Barrett Bohm of Bonduel, Connor Danke of Green Lake, Dustin Gordon of Onalaska, Zachary Herrman of Sparta, Mason Joholski of Viroqua, Taylor Kohlwey of Holmen, Nate Krause of Jackson, Kolin Kubitz of Clintonville, Kody Larsen of Genoa-DeSoto-Stoddard, Ryan Maier of Union Grove, Jacob Mogged of Oconto Falls, Vincent Pintarro of Tomah, Noah Polcyn of Berlin, Nolan Ritter of La Crosse Post 52, Tyler Salmons of Kenosha Merchants, Tyler Trepanier of Oconto and Luke Wickersheim of White Lake.
