Maroons Hold Off Antigo In Opener
Issue Date: September 4, 2013
Despite having to replace 8 starters, the Menominee Maroons opened the 2013 season with a 20-0 road win over Antigo Friday night. Menominee used a balanced 341 yard offensive punch that featured 170 yards on the ground and 171 through the air.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Maroons used a bend but dont break scheme and turned back Antigo once it got in the red zone.
Offensively we rolled up 341 yards and had a nice mix of run and pass, Maroon coach Joe Noha said. Antigo moved the ball between the 20s, but once they got in the red zone we tightened things up. For some of our new players it was baptism by fire, but they survived. Antigo is a nice squad and went undefeated at home last year. I know they had a rough first game with West DePere losing 47-0, but once again West DePere is a power.
Justin Brilinski shouldered most of the offensive load for the Maroons, rushing for a trio of touchdowns while adding 9 of 14 passes for 141 yards and two interceptions. Brilinski finished with 17 carries for 41 yards while James Brown added 13 rushes for 76.
The Maroons registered a pair of first half teedees to claim a 14-0 lead.
After getting pinned at their own one yard line, the Maroons traveled the length of the field. The time consuming march was highlighted by a 44 yard pass to Devon Barley before Brilinski bulled over from 5 yards out.
Menominee found the comforts of the end zone in period two following a 65 yard march. Brilinski hooked up with Shaun Sullivan for 40 yards to the 26 while Brown busted free on a 21 yard jaunt to the one. Brilinski took it from there then hit Barley with the conversion toss.
A fumble recovery set up Menominees final touchdown, a 10 yard run by Brilinski with just under 9 minutes remaining.
Matt Wolter sparked Antigo with 22 carries for 114 yards while completing 4 of 9 passes for 20 yards.
We have some things to work on, but the effort of our kids was great on both sides of the ball. Wolter was a really nice player for Antigo, weighs around 220 pounds, Noha said.
The Maroons will host Milwaukee Riverside (0-2) Friday at 7pm.
I told our kids they better have their track shoes on as Riverside will be running all over the place, Noha concluded.
