Peshtigo Netters Stay Within Striking Distance Of Coleman

Registering wins over Niagara and Lena, the Peshtigo Bulldogs remained within striking distance of first place and unbeaten Coleman (4-0) in the M-O Conference volleyball circuit. Peshtigo (3-1) was forced to go 5 games against Niagara Thursday before prevailing 20-25, 25-19, 22-25, 25-16 and 15-6. Things were a little easier Tuesday in a 3-game sweep of Lena.

The talented Cougars remain the only unbeaten team in the league following victories over Suring and Crivitz. Coleman topped the Eagles Thursday 25-12, 25-16, 22-25 and 25-16 while cruising past Crivitz Tuesday 25-17, 25-14 and 25-14.

The Cougars will look to keep their hold on the conference lead with a triangular Thursday,September 12 at Niagara followed by a trip to STAA on Tuesday, September 17.

-Thursday’s Results

Peshtigo Slips Past

Niagara In Five Games

The Bulldogs dug in after a 20-25 defeat in the opening game against the Badgers Thursday to take the victory in the M-O matchup 20-25, 25-19, 22-25, 25-16, 15-6.

"The Peshtigo/Niagara matchup is always like this-usually five games and right to the wire," said Peshtigo head coach Lynn Tonn-Kostreva. "I was very pleased with our play. We transitioned well and we were able to get our setters nice passes so they could set up our hitters."

Kostreva noted that her team has been working on its passing in recent practices and it clearly paid off as the home team Bulldogs needed every bit of fundamental skill they have working for them in the marathon match.

The victorious Bulldogs got a pretty big night out of Carly Dietrich, who came up with 20 kills, 16 digs and a pair of aces. Nicole Motkowski turned in 20 assists, 35 digs two blocks, eight kills and three aces; Teja Tonn had 19 digs, a block, 14 kills and an ace while Taylor Sodini tallied 19 assists and nine digs."

"The only negative I have is that we missed 18 serves," said Kostreva of her squad's effort against Niagara. "That means we gave them 18 free points- a real big no-no."

Leading the way for Niagara was Shelby Borchardt, who came up with 57 digs, four assists and four kills over the five games played.

Mackenzie Gregg had eight kills, a block, two digs and two assists; Brooklyn Wolosyn had 17 digs, seven kills and a block while Abbey Bagnieschi chipped in 27 assists, seven digs and a kill.

Sadowski was set up at the net thanks largely to Lindsey Kerr's 40 assists on the evening. Kerr also had eight digs, two blocks, two kills and an ace; Abby Bieber turned in 11 kills and 13 digs while teammate Sammy Schaal had an ace, three kills, a block, five assists and 10 digs.
