Letter to Editor:
To Marinette County Residents:
Is every citizen in the county asleep? Ive read in the Peshtigo Times, Wed., Aug. 28 edition, the County Board adopts new County Pay Plan. If you have not read this article, please do! For example: Cost of living increase will be eliminated, red circling positions will be established, etc.
Now in the Peshtigo Times, Wed., Sept. 4, the County Board recommended a salary increase for Adm. Ellen Sorenson of $3,080 for 2014. When hired in 2011 her salary was $96,500/year. Currently, it is $97,465/year. Adding $3,080 to that brings it to $100,560 annually, in 2014.
How is this justified?
Services to all citizens of the county have been decreased. Example: County employees lost jobs, decreased wages, health insurance benefits, senior programs and school aid, health clinics, public transportation, library, etc. Also curtailing public works - i.e., snow removal, road repairs.
While citizens in Marinette County are deprived of benefits and services, I fail to understand how a Professional Adm. can comfortably accept a raise in this situation. Personal annual increments have been received thus far. However, with the economic situation currently, wouldnt it be respectful and professional to lead by example? Decline the increase and gain respect.
To the Editor:
The Korean War/Police Action began as a civil war in the 50s. (The United States sent in its troops.)
In the 60s, Vietnam had a civil war. (The United States sent in its troops.)
Recently, Afghanistan had a civil war. (Once again, the U.S.A. sent in its troops.)
Now, political warmongers, backed by greedy, globally involved billionaires, are calling for U.S. intervention in Syria (another case of civil war)!
The real issue is not the use of weapons of mass destruction, which Syria can continue to produce even if their present stockpile is destroyed. (It has little to do with America getting involved in yet another conflict to keep America free.)
Americas millions of hardworking, honest citizens, especially the struggling middle class and senior citizens, pay multiple taxes to support a government that no longer cares about them. I think it is time to have America take care of Americans. It is time for us to mind our own business. Let Syria and the rest of the world learn to solve their own conflicts, while we dig out of our own problems.
When we work together to recreate the democracy envisioned by our founding fathers, with prayer and effort, it can be accomplished.
