Coroner George Smith, right, and a Coleman Fire Department member examine the vehicle of Kristian A. Reed, 21, Niagara, who died when his vehicle was struck headon by a vehicle operated by Joseph G. Hayes, 43, Lemont, Ill., The crash happened Friday evening, Sept. 27, on U.S. 141 in the Town of Pound.

2 Killed In Separate Crashes in County

Two persons were killed in separate accidents in Marinette County over the weekend making the total of seven for the year.

Kristian A. Reed, 21, Niagara died Friday evening, Sept. 27 at the scene of the accident on U.S. 141 in the Town of Pound.

Paul E. Stuht, 69, Racine, died Sunday afternoon, Sept. 29, in a single car crash on U.S. 41 near Fifrick Lane in the Town of Grover.

The two fatalities were the sixth and seventh in Marinette County this year.

Kristian A. Reed, 21, Niagara, was killed in a head-on crash shortly before 11 p.m. Friday when his northbound vehicle was struck head-on by a southbound pickup truck traveling in the northbound lane operated by Joseph G. Hayes, 43, Lemont, Ill. A total of three vehicles were involved according to Marinette County Sheriff Department Chief Deputy James Hansen.

The crash happened on US. 141 between the Coleman exit and County Trunk CP overpass in the Town of Pound. The sheriff department dispatch was notified at 10:54 p.m.

District Attorney Allen Brey has charged Hayes with felony counts of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle and homicide by use of a vehicle with a prohibited alcohol content and misdemeanor charges of cause injury by operation of a vehicle while intoxicated, first offense, and operating a vehicle with a prohibited alcohol concentration 0.15 causing injury first offense.

Hayes had an initial appearance Tuesday, Oct. 1, before Marinette County Circuit Court Judge James Morrison who set a cash bond of $250,000 and an adjourned initial appearance for 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 7, with his attorney. Hayes also signed a waiver of extradition since he is from Illinois.

Reed was pronounced dead at the scene by Marinette Coroner George Smith of massive trauma to the head and chest.

According to the complaint, Reed was northbound in his Pontiac Sun Fire and behind him was a northbound Toyota SUV operated by Elvis Tucek of Chicago, Ill. They were in front of a northbound semi operated by Mike Riley, Iron Mountain, Mich.

Hayes was southbound in his 2012 Chevrolet full sized pickup truck and crossed into the northbound lane striking the Reed vehicle headon and causing the Tucek SUV to crash into the wreckage. There was extensive front end damage.

The impact caused the Tucek SUV to come to rest in the northbound shoulder lane and the Reed vehicle landed in the median. The semi truck operated by Riley was able to stop in time. The Hayes pickup came to rest in the median, south of the two other vehicles.

Tucek, who was injured, was able to call 911 to report the crash and summon assistance. Tucek was extracted from his vehicle and transported to BAMC with neck and back pain for treatment.

Hayes was also transported to BAMC and questioned by Sheriff Deputy Nickels. According to the complaint, Hayes refused to give a blood sample and a warrant was obtained and a sample taken.

Responding to the crash scene were sheriff deputies, Pound Fire Department, Coleman Fire Department Coleman Rescue Squad, Crivitz Rescue Squad, Marinette Police Department and Coroner George Smith.

Paul E. Stuht, 69, Racine, died as the result of a single vehicle crash shortly before 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29, on U.S. 41 near Fifrick Lane in the Town of Grover.

Chief Deputy Hansen reported dispatch received the call at 12:56 p.m. Stuht was southbound on U.S. 41 when his vehicle left the roadway and rolled over. He was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. He was alone in the vehicle.

An autopsy revealed Stuht had received head and internal injuries, according to Coroner George Smith.

Responding to the scene were sheriff deputies, Peshtigo and Marinette police, Grover/Porterfield Fire Department, BAMC, Emergency Rescue Squad and Coroner George Smith. Investigation will continue by the sheriff department.
