Letter to the Editor:

After taking some time to reflect, and being able to focus on the 2013 Marinette Logging & Heritage Festival again, I have realized how extremely proud and grateful I am for the opportunity to be a part of the Festival. Gratitude can be hard to foster when we are experiencing struggle at the same time. Negativity can be overcome, but it is hard to feel grateful during moments like that. Maybe not everything in our lives is the way we want it to be but some things are wonderful, and the things that aren’t so wonderful will get better in time. Gratitude helps to solve insoluble problems and helps to look at everything more positively.

On April 15, 2011, the idea for the first annual Marinette Logging & Heritage Festival became a reality. On this day, we learned there was no longer a Jaycee Chapter. In the past, they had provided the Marinette community with the celebrations on the 4th of July that we had all grown to love. Following that moment, a disappointed group of interested persons gathered together and promised to be inspired by the hope of another event that would showcase our city for years to come.

Ideas and activities came together with this core group of 26 volunteers. With the generous donations from local businesses, concerned citizens and community organizations, we have been able to feature and provide a unique free family-oriented event. This year 30 generous financial donations were received to plan and stage the third Marinette Logging & Heritage Festival. These donations helped to provide a unique experience in celebrating our rich culture and heritage. I hope you realize what a difference you made.

After approval from the Marinette City Council in mid-September, the Festival will once again be held the second weekend of July. The dates will be July 12-13 in 2014. We look forward to the excitement of planning and instrumenting this even once again and hope that the negativity will lessen.

You know what I am grateful for? You! I am proud of our volunteers, Marinette, our county, our rich history, and the wonderful people who live and work here.

Thank you again,

Judy Alwin,

Logging & Heritage

Festival Chairman

Times Editor:

I just read the article written by Duane Swanson of Crivitz about his Yellow Ribbon Honor Flight for Wisconsin Vietnam Veterans in the Oct. 2nd issue of the Peshtigo Times. It was awesome that he got to make this fantastic trip to visit many of the War Memorials in the Washington, DC area and that he was able to visit with a comrade from 47 years ago also! I hope all our Vietnam Vets get to go on this trip. Mr. Swanson wrote that he enjoyed every part of the trip including a live concert when they returned to Appleton. Congratulations to you!

To the Editor:

On Sept. 23 a blood drive was held at Wausaukee High School. Every time I’ve given blood all the people involved have been friendly and considerate.

It was nice to see some high school students donating, and also a grade school teacher brought her class into the auditorium to show them that giving blood doesn’t hurt and there’s nothing to be afraid of. Most of all, it shows how important it is to be a donor.

It was sad that not many people donated blood that day. I don’t understand why. Not even school leaders came to donate. It doesn’t cost a cent, and think of all the people you will help. Some day you or a loved one may need blood, and how would you feel when that day comes and there isn’t blood to help you?

Most everyone can donate, and those who can’t can volunteer in some way. Giving blood is rewarding. It’s a good feeling knowing your blood will help someone in need.

I challenge all of you who did not give blood to be a donor the next time the blood drive is at the Wausaukee school. It’s the right thing to do. Open your heart.

Roger Lanich,

Wausaukee
