Marinette's Dufrane Is State Runner-Up
Carding a two-day total score of 157, Marinette senior Abby Dufrane tied for second place at the Division 2 WIAA state golf meet. The talented linkster fired a round of 78 Monday at the par-71 University Ridge Golf Course in Madison then came back with a rain-soaked 79 Tuesday for the best state finish in Marinette school history.
Dufranes round of 78 on Monday featured 3 straight bogeys on the front nine 40 followed by a 38 over the final 9 holes and a trio of bogeys. Despite the late miscues, Dufrane was within 3 strokes of the lead.
Starting on the back nine Tuesday, Dufrane ran into trouble early with a double-bogey on the the 10th hole followed by a pair of bogeys before scrambling for a 41. Heading to the front nine, Dufrane closed out her brilliant prep career with round of 38.
Caroline Lake of state champion Madison Edgewood pursed individual honors with a 141 (73-68) while Kayla Priebe of Fox Valley Lutheran shot a 157 (80-77) to tie Dufrane for second place. Third place went to Mikayla Smith of Xavier 161 (80-81) with Kate Wurflova of Luxemburg-Casco and Sienna Chapman of The Prairie School sharing fifth at 162.
Dufrane tied for 8th place last year at the state meet and 10th in 2011. The previous best state finish for a Marinette golfer was 5th place by Caryn Walker.
The team title in D-2 went to Edgewood with a score of 681 followed by Fox Valley Lutheran 702, The Prairie School 731, Osseo-Fairchild 752, Spooner 790 and Hayward 795.
Division 1 Honors
Hartland Arrowhead put together a two-day score of 638 to claim the D-1 state team title with Verona at 648, Middleton and Mukwonago 655 and Notre Dame 5th out of 12 teams at 686.
Jessica Reinecke of Verona shot 143 (69-74) for top honors followed by Anika Hitt of Homestead 147 (76-71) and Becky Klongland of Stoughton 151 (74-77).
Jessie Staed paced Notre Dame with a score of 155 (78-77).
