Athelstane Warns Cemetery Water Is Not For Drinking

Athelstane—Cemetery water, signs on town property after finding trails and building, amending the ATV ordinance and Rescue Squad contract were among items of business when the Athelstane Town Board met Monday, Oct. 7, with 13 individuals in attendance.

Treasurer Greg Reinhardt commented that he attended the Wisconsin Towns Association (WTA) seminar in Wabeno and an environmentalist said there should not be a water supply in, or close to, a cemetery because the caskets and bodies put out formaldehyde and contaminate the water. He suggested having the water tested at the town hall and installing a sign at the cemetery that the water is not for drinking. He also commented that Dick Stadelman of the WTA is retiring next December.

Supervisor Harold Tesch received a communication from Benjamin Jordan of the Wisconsin Transportation Information Center whom he talked to the gravel roads seminar held in Rhinelander. Jordan has written a paragraph that will appear in the Crossroads magazine stating the Town of Athelstane fabricated an 1,800 gallon water tank which allows the town to bring water to the maintenance operation and do an effective job of grading gravel roads regardless of weather conditions and improving the compaction of the gravel surface.

Tesch also reported Jerry Readman attended and the town purchased a Slopemeter for the grader to obtain the proper slopes on roads for proper drainage. They also had the water truck out even though it rained in order to get water underneath the gravel as when calcium chloride is applied, it will bind up to help prevent dust and wash boarding effect.

As the result of a recent survey of town property, Tesch checked and found ATV trails mowed through the woods, a food plot, apple trees, horse shoe pits and a building on town property. The Board approved posting No Trespassing signs and sending a letter to property owners.

During the public comment portion of the meeting, Jack Gegare stated at this time of year the maintenance crew is normally down to two men because there is not enough work for 3 men.

Supervisor Tesch stated there is vacation time to be used before year-end, salt and sand has to be mixed, there is excavating and grading to be done and the equipment needs to be ready for winter.

Fire Chief Phil Jacobs reported the fire department responded to one incident in September and two meetings and drills were held with 17 members attending for a total of 34 hours of training. On Sept. 28 they responded to the North Station to set up a landing zone for the helicopter with 12 members responding using four pieces of equipment for a total of one hour.

Supervisor David Jose gave the Planning Commission report of the Oct. 1 meeting when five members were present and two visitors. There were no variances or certified survey maps to review. Bear hunters dragging on town roads were discussed and the camping ordinance was discussed and will continue next month.

In other action, the Board amended Ordinance 32 All-Terrain Vehicle Routes to remove Section V(B)(1): Landowners and their guests may operate all-terrain vehicles on town roads that are not designated routes provided such operation is for the sole purpose of traveling between the landowners property and a designated route. Further, such operation must follow the shortest and most direct route for traveling between the landowner’s property and the designated route. And, to change Section V(B)(2) to Section V(A)(1): In this section “town road” shall mean any road maintained by and under the jurisdiction of the Town of Athelstane.

In other action, the Board:

* Was informed by Supervisor Bill Jose that Dennis Schneider on Taylor Road asked if the town would sell him some property on Deer Lake Road. No action was taken.

* Approved the report of Treasurer Reinhardt showing balance on hand on Sept. 30 at $170,172.71 consisting of minus $4,039.70 in checking, $5,003.62 general money account, $60,143.61 tax money account and $109,065.18 in certificate of deposit.

* Were informed two stop signs had been knocked down.

* Chairman John Dobratz thanked Jim Abele for bringing to the board’s attention that there are grants available from the DNR for 50 percent of re-seeding forest land.

* Approved obtaining bids for sale of timber.

* Issued a citation to Noacks on Perch Lake Road for an ordinance violation.

* Will send a letter regarding delinquent personal property taxes and stating the consequences if not paid.

* Approved the Wausaukee Rescue Squad contract of $8,535.78.

* Will have Marinette County collect taxes.

* Approved an operator license for Crystal Piette.
