Press Is Key As Peshtigo Wears Down Suring 63-14

The Peshtigo Bulldogs, defending co-champions, opened the 2013-14 M-O Conference campaign in style Tuesday night with a 63-14 whipping of visiting Suring. Unleashing a tenacious fullcourt press, which forced the Eagles into numerous turnovers resulting in easy baskets, Peshtigo raced to a commanding 33-6 lead by halftime and was never threatened.

Elsewhere around the M-O circuit, Niagara knocked off Wausaukee 55-45, Lena held off Crivitz 40-34 and Gillett topped visiting STAA 49-20.

-Tuesday’s Results-

Bulldogs Blast

Suring 63-14

With 10 players making their way into the scoring column, the Bulldogs had little trouble disposing of Suring 63-14. Combining fullcourt pressure with a deep bench, coach Bob Kuchta’s gals ran Suring ragged while racing to a 20-2 first quarter lead.

Pressing on every possession, the Bulldogs either stole the inbounds pass or forced the Suring ball handlers to throw it away. The end result were some easy layups for the Bulldogs and that huge lead.

Peshtigo opened the game on a 9-0 run as Teja Tonn canned two free throws, Carly Dietrich flipped in a pair of layups and Amanda Majewski drilled a trey.

Suring temporarily stopped the run when Kelsey School tallied a jumper, before the Bulldogs closed out the opening period on an 11-0 run. Bringing in five players off the bench, Kuchta saw Saige Ruleau get things started with a layup, Brittany Marquardt and Addison Cogswell added buckets before Amanda Emmes canned a 5-footer for a 20-2 spread.

Period two was more of the same for Peshtigo...pressing and more points.

This 8 minute stretch saw the Bulldogs run off a 13-4 surge to pry open a comfortable 33-6 halftime lead. Nicole Motkowski fired in a pair of baskets to key an 8-0 run while Ryleigh Klaver added a layup and two free throws.

Suring finally got back on the scoreboard at the 3:54 mark of period two when Mackenzi LaMarre hit the backend of a two shot foul for a 29-3 deficit.

The Bulldogs closed out the half on layups by Bekah Sokol and Marquardt to enjoy that 27 point lead.

Continuing to force uptempo, the Bulldogs tacked on a 22-6 third quarter surge as Marquardt hit for a pair of baskets and two free throws, Majewski five points including a three while Sokol also found the mark from behind the arc.

Owning a 55-12 edge, Peshtigo capped its big offensive performance with an 8-2 spurt in the fourth quarter.

Marquardt sparked the Bulldogs with a game high 13 points off the bench, Dietrich and Motkowski added 10 points each, Majewski 8 and Sokol 7.

Without the services of their best player in Calley VanBellinger (foot injury), Suring saw Kelsey School and Jacquelyn Lenz net 4 points each.

Badgers Take Care

Of Rangers 55-45

Niagara had three players reach double-digit scoring territory Tuesday night in a home victory over Wausaukee 55-45.

Brooklyn Wolosyn turned in 19 points to lead Niagara while Shanna Nordell and Maria Miller each chipped in a dozen for the winning squad.

For Wausaukee, Crysta Clark led all scorers with 21 points, six of which came from long distance, while Angel Melton and Kaylor DeLaet both added seven.

Lena Edges Crivitz

The Wildcats got some solid minutes out of their starters on Tuesday as they managed to hold off the Wolverines of Crivitz 40-34.

Crivitz came out strong in the opening quarter and outscored the home-team Wildcats 14-5 but couldn't keep the intensity up the entire game as Lena played a stronger second half to secure the win. Kayla VanLanen turned in 16 to lead all scorers while fellow Wildcats Melissa Bushmaker added 13.

Crivitz was paced by 12 points from Victoria Neumann's while Jen Kempka added nine.

Gillett Takes Care

Of Cavalettes 49-20

Running off a 17-2 second quarter surge, Gillett topped visiting STAA Tuesday 49-20. The Tigers owned a 24-9 halftime lead then sealed the win with a 25-11 second half charge.

Kara Brennan fired in 15 points for Gillett, including a trio of threes.

Taylor Wilson paced STAA with 9 points and Riley Schultz added 7.

-Non League Results-

Coleman Falls

To Bonduel

Coleman's Abby Bieber scored eight of her 10 points in the third quarter but it wasn't enough to overcome a 28-12 halftime deficit as the Bonduel Bears came to Coleman and ripped the Cougars 45-27.

In addition to Bieber's 10, the Cougars got four apiece from Sammy Schaal and Makenzie Sadowski.

Gillett Battered

By Bonduel 54-20

In a hardwood mismatch, Gillett was routed by visiting Bonduel 54-20 Friday night. The Tigers trailed 27-15 at the half before getting outscored 16-0 in period three.

Deanna Zernicke popped in 15 points for Bonduel.

Crandon Crushes

Suring 55-24

After a competitive first quarter saw the Suring Eagles only five points behind Crandon at 15-10, the Cardinal girls went on a 17-6 run over the second frame to put the game out of reach and pocket the 55-24 win over the Eagles in Suring.

Jacquelyn Lenz led the Eagles with six points while Crandon's Sara Cottrell led all scorers with 18.

Niagara Topped

By Laona-Wabeno

Making just 9 of 24 free throws proved to be fatal for Niagara Thursday in a 34-26 non league loss to Laona-Wabeno. The Badgers held a 10-9 halftime lead but fell behind 25-16 in the second half.

Brooklyn Wolosyn topped Niagara with 14 points.
