A Child’s Christmas Wish

“A New Daddy for Christmas”

“Mommy, can I have a new Daddy since my Daddy is in Heaven?” my little 3-year-old boy asks. I answer him, “Maybe, someday.” “Can I have your Daddy since I don’t have one?” I chuckle and explain that Grandpa is my Daddy and although I would love to share him that Grandpas are also very special people in their lives.

“When can I have my new Daddy?” he asks. “I want me and sister and you to go to Heaven to see Daddy because I miss him.”

A mother’s heart cries out quietly at the innocent expression of her sweet little boy who lost his father just two months ago. “Will my new Daddy be with us for Christmas?” “No,” I replied sadly. Thoughts reel in not knowing how to tell him that after many years of watching their daddy battle an illness, that you just don’t replace him like a new toy.

Trying to shop for presents this Christmas and somehow all the toys on the shelf pale in comparison to the void of the vacant place of Daddy.

What does one say to these little ones asking such difficult questions, except that God is good and His mercy endures forever.

Daddies are such very important people and I just wanted to encourage all the hardworking Dads out there to please remember that life is short. You may not think what you do makes a difference in your children’s lives but there is no present that can take the place of a Daddy.

Sincerely,

A loving Mom

To the editor:

There is something rotten in the water in Marinette.

I just received my tax bill from the city of Marinette with an increase I might add and with the questions surrounding the Marinette water department I decided to do a little investigation. With a few clicks of the Mighty Mouse I was able to find a web link via the Sheboygan Press that provides information regarding the salaries of public employees. Needless to say I was interested in the city of Marinette especially since there are questions surrounding the overtime abuses within the Marinette Water Department.

Here is what I found:

There were 13 employees who received overtime pay from the data provided for the year 2011-2012. Contained within I found those 13 employees received a total of $163,056 in overtime pay.

The information provided via the Sheboygan Press showed One employee received $35,460 in overtime. Another $31,160, another $23,569, another $20,466, another $18,076 and on and on and on it goes.

With this type of abuse of tax dollars one needs to wonder of the other abuses of taxpayers dollars within our city government. God forbid our government cuts taxes to curtail their own abuses and waste.

If $163,000 in overtime isn’t a waste of taxpayers dollars I do not know what is. There isn’t another department within the city that even comes close to the water departments overtime abuse. I applaud those department managers. With the drug problem in our community we need to ask how far $163,000 would go toward fighting those crimes? A new police car or two? New surveillance equipment? A few more patrol officers? Money for elderly programs? New equipment for various departments?

In the words of Vince Lombardi, “What the hell is going on out there?”

Shame on the city of Marinette for allowing this to happen. $163,000 in overtime in which there is absolutely no justification. Someone needs to be held accountable. The administrator recently announced his retirement but I’m sure he’ll get his golden parachute without any consequences. Employees will get a free pass and the water commission is washing their hands of this abuse along with the Mayor and City Council who remain silent. This is a Shameful abuse of the citizens tax dollars and our city leaders only answer is to raise the water rates and place it all on the backs of the taxpayers. Wake up people! Call your alderperson and demand answers.

The good old boy network remains strong within the confines of Marinette and it needs to stop.

Merry Christmas taxpayers.

Letter to the Editor:

I wanted to send this letter to the editor a couple months ago, but it wasn’t a good time in my life as my best friend became ill and passed away. This letter is to inform people and respond to a statement Richard Anderson made at the Volunteer Cemetery Committee meeting, stating, “You of all people...with the vendetta you have against the Richter family.”

Six years ago I made the decision to run for Alderman for the City of Peshtigo. I raised my family here and am proud to call Peshtigo home. At that time Tom Strouf was the mayor and one of my committees was Streets & Drainage, and I have remained on this committee until the present.

I can remember my first thoughts were that this was going to be a boring committee and what could we possibly meet and discuss on a monthly basis? I was soon to find out, I couldn’t have been more wrong. One day at city hall I was handed a folder containing information about a garage my neighbors had built at the end of our road. I was told they were denied through the city’s Board of Appeals process, but went ahead and built it anyway.

Keep in mind, this garage I am referring to was built 4-5 years ago, before I was on the council. We did address the issue with the city attorney and building inspector, but too many years had passed to issue any type of citations. What I can’t understand is, if people knew this was being built illegally, why wasn’t something done sooner?

About three years ago the Judiciary Committee put on their agenda to look into vacating the end of Dishaw Avenue because the home owner on the end of the road owned property on both sides. Dishaw Ave. is a dead-end street, as it leads into the Peshtigo River. At that time I was not a member of that committee but did attend the meeting. I informed the committee it was not in the best interest of the city to vacate city property and waterway access to the river. I also contacted the DNR and they informed me they would not allow a municipality to abandon a waterway access.

Being Chairperson of Streets & Drainage, I received a safety concern from a resident about vehicles (trucks-garbage, recyclable, fire and rescue) backing down the road to exit Dishaw Ave. They would like to see a cul-de-sac or some type of turnaround put in at the end of Dishaw Ave. to afford the larger vehicles an area to turn around and be able to drive forward exiting Dishaw. Raising my children we did not have that concern as the previous home owner allowed trucks to turn around on her property and they drove forward as they existed Dishaw.

The Richters feel they own the property past where the blacktop ends, brought fill in and planted grass at the end of the road, and have been maintaining it for several years. We have lived on Dishaw over 30 years and have pictures of the area prior to brush cleaning and grass being planted.

There is law called “Adverse Possession,” which means if you maintain a piece of property for a number of years, you can take the owner of that said property to court to obtain it. The City of Peshtigo through the advice of the city attorney has hired a firm to determine ownership of that property. The attorney also advised if it is the city’s property we need to put something in writing that we give them permission to maintain that area.

This is why I wanted to write this letter, to better inform everyone on what issues are at hand. We both live on the same road and are presently addressing issues. I personally have nothing against the Richters and I was disappointed when Mr. Anderson made that accusation. We had a meeting addressing Dishaw Ave. and Mr. Richter stated he loved my husband Carl like a brother. I did not go looking for this issue at hand, but I will see it settled for the best interest of the city.

Cathi Malke,

Alderman

City of Peshtigo

Thank You

to a thoughtful man in Menominee

The Christmas spirit appeared at the Perkins Restaurant Saturday, Dec. 14 while members of the Military 20 Year Club Ceremonial Team warmed themselves between ceremonies. A gentleman unknown to anyone paid for their meal and left. Unable to thank this gentleman in person, members wish him a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
