Cougars Enjoy Mat Success

Clip Oconto Falls, 2nd At Shawano Meet

The Coleman Cougars enjoyed a big winning weekend on the wrestling mats as they knocked off longtime nemesis Oconto Falls 60-18 Friday night before notching a second place finish at the 12-team Shawano Holiday Classic Saturday.

“We wrestled very well at both Oconto Falls and at Shawano. In the Oconto Falls match, we only lost one contested match which is outstanding against a very good team. Our kids came ready to wrestle, so I was very proud of their performance. It was finally nice to have Derek Teteak and Jensyn Schaal back in the lineup after injuries,” Coleman coach Kevin Casper said.

After coming up on the short end for the past 5 years against Oconto Falls, the Coleman Cougars turned the tables Friday night with a dominating 60-18 non-conference win. Coleman claimed 11 of the 12 bouts wrestled with two forfeits. Coleman is the fourth ranked team in Division 3 and Oconto Falls 6th in D-2.

Things got better on Saturday as five champions sparked the Cougars to a runner-up finish at Shawano.

“I'm very pleased with how we wrestled at Shawano and looking forward to the Oshkosh holiday tournament which is biggest in state with 60 teams,” Casper added.

Coleman and Peshtigo will take part in the Oshkosh On the Water Tournament on Friday, December 27 and Saturday, December 28.

Pins Key As Cougars

Clip Oconto Falls

Pins were the name of this win as Coleman put 7 Panthers on their backs while recording 4 other victories Friday.

After forfeiting the 145 bout and watching defending state champion Dewey Krueger pin Kevin Lansin in 2:51, the Cougars put 11 wins on their side of the board.

Trevor Seewald got things started with a 1:52 pin of Nate Braker at 160, Dexter Karban needed 28 seconds to dispose of Garrett Cole at 170, Alex Stodola whipped Matt Winkler 11-1, Hunter Stodola pinned Brandon Armstrong in 3:53 (195), Abraham Nowak pinned Collin Wall in 1:32 at 220, CJ Pillath stepped up to heavyweight and pinned Calvin Steinmetz in 0:39, Derick Teteak roughed up Evan Konitzer 11-1 in his first match of the season and Jordan Blanchard pinned Austin Stanek in the 113 bout in just 50 seconds.

The final 3 Coleman wins saw Jensyn Schaal whip Bryce Ash 19-4, Marc Lansin dominate Jacob Stoinski at 132 by a 21-6 score while Jackson Margis pinned Nate Trepanier in 5:10 to close out the match.

Five Champions Key

Coleman’s Run At

Shawano Invitational

Heading to the Shawano Invitational Saturday, the Cougars captured a second place finish after piling up 380 points and crowning 5 individual champions.

Wittenberg-Birnamwood won the team title with a score of 386, Peshtigo was fifth at 191 and Oconto sixth 182.

Claiming top honors for the Cougars were Jensyn Schaal at 126 pounds, Marc Lansin 132, Jackson Margis 138, Kevin Lansin 145 and Trevor Seewald 152.

Silver medals were awarded to a trio of Cougars...Jordan Blanchard 113, Dexter Karban 160 and CJ Pillath 220. Derek Teteak took home a third place bronze medal at 106 as did Alex Stodola at 170.

“We had a great day at Shawano. Ended up with 5 individual champions which is fantastic, and two seconds. Champions were Jensyn Schaal, who dominated throughout the day. Marc Lansin had a great day winning in double overtime in the finals. Kevin Lansin had a super day getting stronger with each match. In finals he wrestled a great match in beating a very good wrestler DJ Messenger of Peshtigo. Trevor Seewald had a phenomenal day pinning every opponent and in turn won the pinners award. Jackson Margis also wrestled super dominating his opponents and winning a very big finals match against Madden from Peshtigo,”Casper explained.

Schaal got the “gold medal run” started for Coleman with a 5-0 readout at 126 pounds. Schaal used two pins along with a pair of decisions to make it into the finals where he whipped Elton Kelsey of Oconto 9-1.

Marc Lansin improved his mat mark to 14-0 with top honors at 132 pounds. Lansin pinned Shawn Bell of Shawano (1:30), John Ensing of Oconto 1:33 and Ryan Dimas of Berlin in 20 seconds to get into the semifinals. Lansin continued to flex his mat muscle with a 11-2 major decision over Skylar Moderson of New London before nipping state-ranked Bobby Utecht of Wittenberg-Birnamwood in double overtime 3-1.

Jackson Margis was the king of the 138 pound bracket using a bye along with pins over Isaac Alexander of Adams-Friendship (0:55) and Gregg Shafer of Bonduel (2:49) to gain a title match berth. In the finals, Margis disposed of M-O Conference foe, Hunter Madden of Peshtigo, by an 8-0 major decision.

Kevin Lansin went 5-0 on the day to finish atop the 145 pound medal stand, including a pair of 5-3 decisions over Sam Kroening of Bonduel and Brian Ozak of Oconto. Lansin (9-5) recorded pins over TJ Johnson in 1:29 and Tim Jerabek 1:35 to move into the finals. Going up against DJ Messenger of Peshtigo (13-3), Lansin posted an 8-4 decision for the crown.

The final Coleman title came compliments of Trevor Seewald at 152 pounds, improving his season mark to 14-0. Seewald won all five of his matches via the same way...pins. He needed 25 seconds to beat Devan Buckholt of Berlin, 1:12 to overpower Griffin Magee of Wittenberg-Birnamwood, 1:27 over Darin Carrigg of Clintonville, 0:58 to whip Hunter Michalak of Oconto and 1:10 to take care of Dan Tauchen of Bonduel.

Blanchard (12-2) won his first 4 matches before losing to Trenton McManus of Adams-Friendship (11-0) in the finals 12-6 at 113 pounds.

Karban (13-1) combined a trio of pins along with a 14-0 major decision over Shane Marquardt of Peshtigo gain a berth in the 160 title bout. Unfortunately for Karban, he ran into Braxton Potrykus of Wittenberg-Birnamwood (19-1) and was pinned in 3:13.

In the 220 pound bracket, CJ Pillath (11-3) opened with a 7-3 decision over Adam Schultz of Oconto, pinned the next 3 opponents before falling to David Miracle of Berlin (18-1) by a 3-1 decision.

Derek Teteak beat Brian Krouth of Peshtigo by a 17-0 technical fall for third place at 106 while Alex Stodola topped Tom Thurber of New London 6-4 for bronze at 170.

Heavyweight Andy Johnston (15-0) had the best finish for a Peshtigo wrestler earning top honors with a 4-0 readout. Johnston pinned Race McClone of Bonduel in 1:15 for a first round win, Dustin Linney of Oconto 0:16 in round two before stopping Zach Wilson of Berlin in round three in 50 seconds. Taking on Bryce Bilogan of Rhinelander in the first place match, Johnston won in 1:02 for the championship.

Hunter Madden (13-2) was the runner-up at 138 after losing to Jackson Margis of Coleman 8-0. DJ Messenger (13-3) lost in the finals against Kevin Lansin 8-4.
