Harris, Maroons Turn Back Marinette 54-40

Connects For 21 Points Off Bench

Sparked by a huge game from senior guard Devon Harris, the Menominee Maroons (2-0) claimed round one of the annual M&M boys hardwood clash Friday night 54-40. All the 5’11 standout did was toss in a game high 21 points and prove to be a difference maker on both ends of the court after coming off the bench.

Devon had an in-school suspension and missed practice Thursday... had to sit to start the game for his punishment, Maroon coach Pete Pericolosi said. Once he got into the game, he was by far the best player on the floor. So athletic, runs the show, got some unbelievable rebounds and hit key shots.

Harris wasn’t the only Maroon to shine as sophomore guard Adam Nolde and freshman Marcus McKenney put together big performances. In just his second career start, Nolde pumped in 13 points while the 5’10 McKenney added 4 points, a team high 7 rebounds and 4 steals.

Nolde puts in a lot of time playing basketball...thought he looked confident and played pretty well for his second game. McKenney, the smallest guy on the floor, led us in rebounding, Pericolosi added.

While the Maroons used a balanced scoring attack, Marinette (1-6) struggled for its points. Senior forward Marcus Maguire was the lone Marine in double figures with 15 points, 11 of those coming in the first half, Jake Holley added 9 and Garrett Waloway 6.

We struggle to score points. We have only two players with varsity experience from last year and sometimes the speed of the other team throws off some of our guys, resulting in scoring problems. Our kids play hard and give a great effort, but we don’t really have a go-to guy when we need points, Marinette coach Nick Semenas said.

Both teams struggled to put points on the scoreboard early as the Maroons were up 8-7 when Harris entered the game with 3:50 remaining in the first quarter. Harris quickly made his presence known tossing in a layup, feeding Nolde for a trey before turning a steal into another layup for a 15-7 lead with 44 ticks left. Getting the ball back following a foul on Zach Delong, Menominee ran the clock down when Harris snuck through for another layup and a 17-7 cushion at the first break.

The Maroon lead continued to grow in period two as Ty Clausen banked in a 15 footer from the top of the key and James Brown flipped in a layup for a 21-10 edge at the 5:50 mark.

As much as the Maroons thought they had control, Marinette wouldn’t quit. Instead the purple and white cagers went on an 8-0 run, sparked by a pair of three point shots from Maguire within a span of 26 seconds to close within 21-18 with 4:14 left in the half.

Brown muscled his way to the hoop for a 23-18 edge, Harris buried a jumper and McKenney went coast to coast on a steal to push the Maroon lead to 28-18 at halftime.

We lost Maguire for a bit in the second quarter and he hit a pair of threes, but we regrouped and made another run after that, Pericolosi added.

A steal by Devon Barley resulted in another Harris layup for a 30-20 third quarter edge while Brown capped an offensive rebounding exhibition with a bucket to go up 12 points.

Southpaw shooting Waloway drained the first of his two treys in the final two minutes of the quarter while Delong added a jumper to get the Marines within 32-25 (1:46).

It didn’t stay that way as Menominee used a jumper by Nolde along with a buzzer beating three pointer from Harris to take a 37-28 spread into the final frame.

With Harris continuing to run the show, Menominee tacked on a 17-12 closing run to seal the win. Harris fired in 8 points in the final 8 minutes, including a layup to put his mates up 43-30 with 6:28 left and a nifty tip-in for a 45-30 spread (5:26).

Marinette stayed close as Maguire found the mark from long range twice and Holley added a 15-footer for a 47-36 deficit with 2:07 remaining.

Forced to foul, the Marines put the wrong Maroon on the free throw line as Harris went 4-4 and Nolde 2-2 to extend the lead to 53-38.

Menominee’s final points saw 6’5 Tyler Howell rebound a missed free throw by McKenney, get fouled and make one of two shots.

Defensively we wanted to keep Harris out of the lane. But he is so quick and strong that was tough to do, Semenas said. The momentum of the game changed when he came in.

Menominee made 20 of 58 shots (34%), turned the ball over 7 times and came up with 13 steals. Off the backboards, Marinette owned a 31-27 rebounding edge.

Because of the late start to our season, this was only our second game and we really haven’t had our full team together practicing...have issues on and off the court. There comes a time when players have to be responsible for their actions, Pericolosi concluded.

Both teams will return to the hardwood courts on January 3 with Menominee traveling to Antigo and Marinette playing at Oconto.

In the jayvee game, Marinette claimed a 55-42 win behind 15 points from Jonte Webb while Keifer Rasner fired in 18 for Menominee.

The freshman outing went to Marinette 40-35 as Kyle McMahon tallied 16 points and Kevin Charlesworth 8. Austin Hansen and Levi Kempka scored 8 each for the Maroons.
