Second Place Finish For Bulldogs

End Up Behind Whitnall During

Trocat Scramble

With 8 wrestlers earning a medal, the Peshtigo Bulldogs claimed a runner-up finish at the 9-team Trocat Scramble hosted by Green Bay West/Southwest Saturday. Coach Warren Howard saw his grapplers total 240.5 points and finish behind tournament champion Whitnall 259.5. Mishicot was third at 206, followed by West DePere 187 and Waupun 171.5.

Leading the way for the Bulldogs was Bryan Shevy with a first place finish at 126 pounds. Shevy went 5-0 on the day to improve his season readout to 15-9.

Five other Peshtigo wrestlers took home silver medals....Hunter Madden at 132 pounds, DJ Messenger 138, Shane Marquardt 160, Steven Strojny 170 and heavyweight Andrew Johnston.

Earning third place awards were Damian VanSleet at 113 pounds and Tyler Brissette 152.

“As a team, everyone wrestled well. We had 8 medals and just fell a little short of the team title,” Howard said.

Shevy began his winning ways on the 126 pound mats with a pair of pins...0:31 over Shawn Bell of Shawano and 2:25 against Kyle Immel of Appleton East. Moving into the third round, Shevy topped Joe Price of Whitnall 5-3 then posted a 14-1 major decision over Hunter Folkman of West DePere. Taking on Price of Whitnall (12-7) again in the first place match, Shevy won 5-2 to earn the gold medal.

“Bryan Shevy was our only champion...wrestled hard and was in control of all of his matches,” Howard added.

Madden went 4-1 on the day to finish second at 132 pounds. He pinned Adam Ray of Appleton East (2:14) followed by a 11-3 decision over Weston Paplham of Mishicot. Madden suffered his lone loss in round four, a 1:08 pin at the hands of eventual Kyle Nelson of Green Bay West/Southwest.

After that setback, Madden recovered with wins over Mike Milquet of West DePere 12-2 and Dylan Kellner of Whitnall 5-2.

Messenger also put together a 4-1 mark at 138 for second place. After taking care of 4 straight opponents, Messenger (21-7) fell to Weston Cracraft of Mishicot (23-2) by a 5-0 decision.

Working the 160 bracket, Marquardt (18-7) used a bye, two wins before losing twice to Cody Urban of Shawano (5-1). Marquardt pinned Dylan Winquist of Mishicot 2:32 in round two, lost to Urban 9-4 and beat Kody Pinch of Waupun 14-8 to set up a rematch with Urban. Marquardt gave it his best shot before falling in a 5:14 pin.

Strojny went 3-2 at the tournament in his first competition of the season at 170 pounds and second place. Strojny won 4-3 over Zak Elliott of Mishicot, 11-3 against Brett DeJardin of Green Bay and earned an injury default victory. His two losses came at the hands of Ryan Whitnall in a 2:53 pin and a 4-0 decision.

Peshtigo’s final second place winner was heavyweight Andrew Johnston (22-1). The big Bulldog registered 4 straight pins to open the tourney....0:27 over Damon Braatz of Shawano, 0:56 against Ben Morlan of West DePere, 1:20 over Brady Stockwell of Waupun and 1:44 in a match with Steve Anderson of Appleton East.

In the battle for first place, Johnston suffered his first setback of the year against Jon Brendemuehl of Mishicot (20-2) by a 10-4 decision.

A pair of Bulldogs claimed bronze medals in Damian VanSleet at 113 and Tyler Brissette 152.

VanSleet (10-13) was 2-2 on the day, including wins over teammate Dylan Williquette 13-3 and Lexi Schroeder of Appleton East in a 1:50 pin.

Brissette (7-4) recorded a trio of wins at 152 pounds, beating Curtis Waupoose of Shawano 10-7, while pinning Jacob Fisher of Appleton East 0:39 and Parker Hall of Green Bay 1:37. His two losses were via pins from Carter Veleke of Waupun 0:51 and Mason Matthias of Mishicot 3:39.

Other finishes for the Bulldogs included fourth for Brian Krouth (15-9) at 106 pounds, Dylan Williquette 113 and Michael Gable 220. Fifth place went to Colin Heckel at 145, Cam Lepkowski 6th 195, 8th place to Nadine VanSleet (5-17) at 120 and Paul Lemke 182.

Oconto Claims Title

At Manawa Tourney

Sparked by gold medal performances from Aiden Wusterbarth (15-1) at 106, Elton Kelsey (14-1) at 120 and Brian Ozak (14-2) in the 145 bracket, the Oconto Blue Devils won the championship at the 17-team Manawa Invitational Saturday.

The Blue Devils totaled 192 points to slip past Waupaca 168, Manawa 149, Winneconne 137.5 and Elcho 132.

Wusterbarth nipped Aaron Raabe of Onalaska Lutheran 7-3 for first place, Kelsey used two pins and 10-2 decision over Austin Gonyou of Waupaca at 120 pounds while Ozak combined a trio of pins with an injury default verdict for top honors at 145.

Ben Giesler was second at 145 while Brandon Tousey earned silver at 170.

Adam Schultz claimed fourth at 220 while Mike Schmidt (160) and Austin Ratajczyk (106) were fifth.
