Coleman Comes Close, Gets Clipped By BayPort

Receives WIAA

Sportsmanship

State Award

On a night they were presented with the WIAA sportsmanship award from the 2013 state team wrestling tournament, the Coleman Cougars presented their faithful backers and alumni with an impressive showing on the mat before falling to state ranked BayPort 36-30.

The Tuesday non-conference clash pitting the third ranked Pirates in Division 1 and second ranked Cougars in D-3, had everything a fan could ask for...bouts featuring state-ranked grapplers, pins, close calls and of course, an exiting finish.

“BayPort is a great program and a great team. Our kids wrestled well and have nothing to hang their heads about, ” Coleman coach Kevin Casper said.

Things didn’t start out to Coleman’s liking as 160 pounder Dexter Karban suffered a 17-11 loss to Jacob Jossart. Currently ranked number one in Division 3, Karban trailed 12-3 early, battled back within 12-10 before suffering the loss.

Thanks to wins by the Stodola brothers, Alex at 170 and Hunter 182, Coleman owned its lone lead of the match after three bouts 6-3. Alex took a 1-0 lead in period two and blanked Andrew Wojkiewicz 3-0. Hunter Stodola and Christian Andrew were scoreless after two periods before the Coleman 182 pounder claimed a 4-2 victory.

“The Stodola boys wrestled awesome and gave us a big spark early,” Casper said.

Unfortunately for the Cougars, that lead was short-lived as BayPort used three straight pins to pry open a 21-6 spread. Nowak Abraham went down in 2:24 at 195, CJ Pillath fell in 5:54 to state ranked Cole VanEnkenvort while Donovan Salewski was put on his back in 1:50 at 285 pounds.

Down but not out, the Cougars did manage to bounce back and got within 21-15 on the strength of a 10-8 overtime win by Derick Teteak at 106 while Jordan Blanchard was awarded six points following a forfeit at 113.

The deficit grew bigger as Brandon Champagne suffered a 2:34 pin at 120 while Jensyn Schaal dropped an 11-6 bout to top ranked Chase Farr at 126 pounds. Schaal is currently the number two ranked wrestler at 126.

Trailing 30-15, the Cougars were once again forced to rally. And they did as 132 pounder Marc Lansin pinned Derek Sundin in 1:55 while Jackson Margis stopped Dylan Sundin 4-0 to get the Cougars within 30-24.

With just two bouts remaining, the match came down to 145 pounds where Chad Osmanski struggled before pinning Kevin Lansin in 5:24. Both wrestlers had their opportunities to win before Osmanski snapped a 3-3 deadlock in the final minute with the pin.

Trevor Seewald closed things out on a winning note for Coleman with a 2:41 pin at 152 pounds.

Bulldogs Bopped

By Blue Devils

Coming out on the short end of 10 bouts, the Peshtigo Bulldogs fell to host Oconto Tuesday 53-21.

“Pin” wins for the Bulldogs saw heavyweight Andy Johnston earn his 100th career victory with a 26 second effort over Dustin Linney, Hunter Madden topped Peyton Boucher in 1:30 at 132 pounds and DJ Messenger put Doug Exworthy on his back in the 138 bout in 2:52.

The final Bulldog win saw Steven Strojny nip Mike Schmidt at 170 pounds with a 5-3 decision.

The night’s featured bout came at 126 pounds where Elton Kelsey tipped Bryan Shevy 2-1.

Pins for Oconto came compliments of Aiden Wusterbarth 106, Tyler Wusterbarth 113, Hunter Michalak 152, Kain VanPay 182, Bailey McNabb 195 and Adam Schultz 220.
