Berth's Big Game Boosts Bulldogs

A huge performance by senior center Jordan Berth sparked the Peshtigo Bulldogs to a 62-43 non-conference win over Oconto Thursday. All Berth did was pour in 32 points and grab 14 rebounds as the M-O Conference leading Bulldogs improved to 12-1 on the season, 8-0 in league play.

“Jordan had a great game and is a smart player. He knew when to pull up for the shot and put the ball on the floor to drive because he knows the angles. Plus Jordan looks for everyone else. I love that approach in a player,” Peshtigo coach Ryan Spaulding said.

With Berth leading the charge, the Bulldogs connected on 21 of 46 shots (46%) and held a commanding 36-15 edge on the backboards. Beth made 11 of 14 field goal attempts, including 2-3 on threes and 8-10 free throws.

Providing support for Berth and Bulldogs were Zach Neumann with 12 points and 8 rebounds, Gunner Kinney 7 points and 4 boards while AJ Woller chipped in with 5 points and 2 assists.

“We didn’t want to work very hard early which was evident by our lack of ball movement and numerous fouls,. We played too much defense with our hands and didn’t move our feet,” Spaulding added. “We had a nice run to open the second half and came out with some intensity.”

Oconto, which fell to 11-4 with the loss, was paced by Conner Moe with 15 points, Kyle Krueger added 7 and Corey Herbert 5.

The 6’3 Berth battered the Blue Devil defense for 13 points in the opening quarter, including a pair of threes and 4-4 on free throws. He tallied the final 5 Peshtigo points, highlighted by a buzzer beating trey which gave his mates a commanding 17-4 lead.

Oconto’s points came on a jumper by Moe (4:52) and two free throws from Krueger at the 2:40 mark.

Fouls took a toll Bulldogs in period two as the men in stripes whistled 10 infractions on the Bulldogs allowing Oconto an chance to get back in the game. The Blue Devils were in the bonus at the 6:27 mark and double bonus with 3:45 left in the half, going 8-12 from the line in the frame. Two free throws by Sawyer Koch moved Oconto with 21-16 (3:45) before Neumann connected on a wing trey to push the lead back to 24-16 with 3:27 left.

Later in the period, Krueger hit on the front end of a two shot foul for a 24-19 deficit while Berth added a free throw and basket in the final minute for that 27-19 edge.

The Bulldogs extended their lead to open the second half as Berth tallied 4 points, Neumann two free throws, Woller a jumper and Kinney a trey to key an 11-4 run.

Oconto wouldn’t back down and used baskets by Krueger and Moe along with a three pointer from Herbert to get within 43-30. Moe later added a three point play with 2:12 remaining as the Blue Devils closed within 10 points.

Berth stopped the Oconto surge with two free throws as Peshtigo took a 45-33 edge into the fourth quarter.

The Bulldogs lead grew to 21 points thanks to an 11-2 run to open the fourth quarter. Berth fired in a trio of shots, Woller canned a clutch three and Brendon Thomas tacked on a layup for the 56-35 spread.

Peshtigo’s final 4 points came via the free throw stripe on throws by Kinney, Neumann and Berth.

“In the second half we moved the ball better and played tougher on the defensive end,” Spaulding concluded.

Peshtigo also came up a winner in the jayvee game 40-37 behind 13 points from Tyler Marquardt.
