Marinette Upends Menominee

Hosting round two of the annual M&M cage clashes Monday night, the Marinette Marines put together a gutty performance to claim a thrilling 44-39 win. After suffering Bay Conference losses to Oconto Falls Friday 59-49 and Hortonville Saturday 55-18, the Marines (2-13, 1-9) rebounded and ended an 11-game losing skid.

We haven’t had the greatest luck this year, but this helps, said Marinette coach Nick Semenas. We played with a lot of intensity for the first time in a long while. Defensively our plan was to keep Harris from driving the paint and were able to do that.

The Maroons came into the rivalry showdown as the slight favorite after posting a 54-40 win back in December. But when the final buzzer sounded, Menominee fell to 5-6 overall and still looking for some offensive punch.

We were flat while Marinette was aggressive and the aggressor won. We only scored 39 points and that is pretty much all I should have to say, Maroon coach Pete Pericolosi said. Our fullcourt trap created some turnovers, but we didn’t capitalize. When you make a steal, you should score. We didn’t!

The offenses were an after thought in the twin city hardwood battle. The shooting percentage for both teams was in the low 30’s as Marinette connected on 12-37 attempts (32%) and 17 turnovers while Menominee finished 16-48 (33%) and 10 miscues.

Marcus Maguire sparked the Marines with 12 points and some strong rebounding, Jimmy Jackimowicz tallied 11 points off the bench while Brian Klumb and Zach Delong chipped in with 8 points each. Free throw shooting was also key for the Marines, going 14-18 for the game, after making 11 straight to start with.

Senior guard Devon Harris netted 19 points for Menominee, 10 of those coming in the fourth quarter. He also added 9 rebounds, 3 steals and 3 assists. Sophomore Adam Nolde added 10 points, making just 2 of 9 shots from behind the stripe.

Registering steals on Marinette’s opening two possessions, the Maroons turned the miscues into a 6-2 lead as Ty Clausen hit a free throw while Devon Harris added a layup and a three point shot. The Marines recovered from the early miscues to go up 7-6 on two free throws by Maguire (2:59) and 11-10 when Jackimowicz drilled a pair with 58 seconds left in the opening quarter.

The see-saw affair continued in period two with the Marines holding a 14-11 scoring edge. Maguire drained a three pointer from the wing then tipped in his own shot for a 16-15 lead. Delong snuck through the Maroon defense for a layup and an 18-15 spread with 3:18 left in the half. Menominee stayed within striking distance on a layup by Devon Barley and a free throw by Harris for a 22-20 score at the 1:56 mark.

Jackimowicz countered with a trey (1:27) before the 6’5 Clausen connected to get the Maroons within 25-22 at intermission.

Klumb found the mark on a pair of three point bombs in the third quarter as the Marines were able to open up leads of 31-22 and 33-25. But the Maroons rallied as Harris penetrated the purple and white defense for a pair of jumpers and a 33-29 deficit heading into the final 8 minutes.

Sophomore guard Garrett Waloway extended Marinette’s lead to 36-29 with a three point shot while Jackimowicz slipped in for a layup and a 38-31 edge with 5:01 left.

Scoring all 10 of Menominee’s points in the fourth quarter, Harris hit a pair of threes to close the gap to 40-37 with 2:14 remaining. Following a missed free throw by Jackimowicz, Menominee called timeout and set up a play that allowed Harris to score on a lob pass from McKenney for a 41-39 deficit (1:24).

The Maroons would get no closer as Maguire hit the front end of a two shot foul for a 42-39 lead (0:21). With time winding down, Harris unloaded a three point shot that missed the mark with Klumb rebounding and getting fouled. The senior calmly sank both attempts to wrap up the 44-39 win.

Marinette will return to the hardwood court Friday night hosting Luxemburg-Casco while the Maroons entertain Peshtigo Thursday in a makeup game, head to Munising (10-1) Saturday before traveling to Oconto Tuesday.

Menominee was victorious in the freshmen and jayvee games.

Marines Topped

By Oconto Falls

Despite holding the upper hand for most of the first half, the Marines struggled over the final two frames and dropped a 59-49 Bay clash at Oconto Falls. Marinette used 13 first half points by sophomore guard Garrett Waloway to pry open a 25-23 halftime spread. In the second half, the Marines were outscored 36-24.

Waloway finished with a game high 20 points while Marcus Maguire added 7.

Marinette made 12 of 26 free throws and the Panthers 19-28.

James Salscheider netted all 13 of his points in the fourth quarter.

The jayvee game went to Marinette 50-34 as well as the freshman affair 68-34.

Offense Missing In

Loss To Hortonville

Netting just 9 points in each half, the Marines were no match for Hortonville Saturday afternoon 55-18. Marinette trailed 32-9 at intermission and 49-16 after three periods.

Maguire and Zach Delong scored 6 points each for Marinette. The purple and white shooters connected on 5-29 shots (17%).

Kyle Witthuhn fired in 17 points to lead Hortonville.

Hortonville won the jayvee clash 58-43 and freshmen outing 53-40.
