Times Editor:

The week of Feb. 9-15 is designated as National Salute to Veterans. Employees and volunteers at the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Medical Center and its seven Community Outpatient Clinics in the Upper Peninsula and northern Wisconsin salute America’s heroes - the nearly 20,000 men and women we proudly care for and serve, as well as over 210 of our employees and 220 of our volunteers who served their country in the military. Men and women who have given more than most to protect and preserve all we hold dear as Americans.

This week, we join VA facilities across the nation in honoring these men and women who have paid, and continue to pay, the price of freedom. There are are no words that can adequately express what their sacrifices have meant to the nation. However, we can take time to express our personal thanks and appreciation to them.

Our patients have a special place in our hearts. However, they are more than “patients” - they are “our Veterans.” Please take time this week to thank a Veteran for his or her service and sacrifice!

Sincerely,

James W. Rice

Medical Center Director

To the Editor:

I wanted to say thank you to all the people who worked so hard to organize the Pro Life Rally at the courthouse and Holy Spirit Parish in Menominee on Jan. 19. Unable to attend the March for Life in Washington, D.C., this was a great way for me to unite with others who value and cherish life. I was inspired by the hope and passion of the young and old who came to the rally. Pastor Joe very dynamically and eloquently called for placing our trust in God and living what the Bible teaches. Rev. Ronald Timock made clear through scripture that every person, before conception, is known and loved by God, and he highlighted how precious human life is from conception to natural death.

At my church every Sunday, we pray for the unity of Christians. In a special way, this prayer was fulfilled at the rally. People who identify themselves through different denominations came together as one group united in prayer, in Jesus’ name, for the cause of life. I felt humbled and privileged to be a part of the event.

The priests in my parish have been calling us to know our faith, evangelize and stand up for God’s will, and to value life. I am filled with so much hope hearing the same message from other church leaders. Only the Holy Spirit could place the same message in the hearts, minds and lips of so many different men. Thank you again for all who organized the event, addressed the crowd and attended the Pro Life Rally.

Christy Baxter,

Menominee

“Are You God?”

A frail little boy

Stood outside a store.

He had no shoes,

And his feet looked sore.

His clothes were ragged

And very thin.

When a stranger walked by

And invited him in.

Little Fellow, what kind

Of shoes would you like?

Find your favorite kind,

That will fit just right.

Now pick out a warm jacket,

Gloves, hat and some trousers and shirts.

We don’t want Mr. Winter

To cause any more hurts.

When finally suited out,

From head to toe.

The man and little boy

Headed out in the snow.

“Thanks,” said the little boy,

His fade all aglow.

“Yet there’s something, Sir,

I would like to know.”

“Are you God?” the boy asked,

With a great big grin.

“No,” said the gentleman,

“Just a child of Him.”

Then the boy smiled and said,

Without hesitation.

“I just knew you had to be....

Some relation!”

Re: Thank you to Coleman Varsity Football Team

I wanted to write and submit a big huge thank you to the Coleman Varsity Football team for the Tackle Cancer Night they hosted back in October. My name is Ginny O'Harrow and I was one of the recipients of this fundraiser. I was diagnosed last February with breast cancer. My family and I were honored to be nominated by Stephanie and Lucas Meyer and Ashley Reed to receive part of the proceeds of that fundraiser.

We had no idea that the amount the boys and the other students (along with teachers, parents and friends) would be so enormous! We received $3,400 to help pay some of our medical bills associated with the surgeries and treatments I have had this year. It was an overwhelming moment for me to realize that you all had raised so much money for someone like me. I think all you young men (and women) should be so proud of yourselves. You have made a difference in my life and that of my family.

Because of your generosity I was able to gift some of that money to the place I got my wig. See, one of the hardest things about this journey for me was to lose my hair. Friends of mine were able to go through a group called "Joy Rising Project" and give me a real hair wig. It allowed me to feel like a regular person during all of my chemo treatments, surgeries and doctor appointments.

In honor of the Coleman football team, I was able to donate some of that money to this project. I recently heard from them and they were excited to tell me that with the money you helped me donate, they will be able to help four other women like me! You should all be so proud of not only touching my life but making a difference in the lives of other women.

Without the idea and implementing of this huge event by Tricia Zeitler, Nikki Kaiser and Robin Rohde, along with Coleman School Principal, coaches, football players, students, and parents, none of this would have been possible. Coleman, I think you should be so very proud of your community and yourselves. I am proud of you! Thank you for EVERYTHING!

Ginny and Joel O'Harrow
