Coleman Gains Share Of Lead

Nips Peshtigo 42-37 In

Double Overtime Thriller

With their hopes for an M-O Conference championship on the line, the Coleman Cougars nipped Peshtigo in a battle of league powerhouses Thursday night 42-37 in double overtime to gain a share of the lead. When the final buzzer sounded following the hardwood thriller, Coleman and Peshtigo share the top spot in the 9-team circuit with 10-1 readouts.

For our seniors, this win should be a little more special.  Last year we had a 5 point lead and the ball under a minute and found a way to lose and then the first time this year we lead about 80% of the game only to find a lid on the basket for the remaining 20%.  This game felt like those two, Coleman coach Jeff Bronson said. The challenge will now be to not have a let-down.  We have all but two conference teams left to play and if they want to attain another co-conference title, the team still needs to come to practice daily ready to work and continue to improve the little things.  I am looking forward to what will happen next.

The top two teams in the circuit cruised to lopsided wins Monday as Coleman leveled visiting Niagara 55-16 in a game where senior center Makenzie Sadowski surpassed the 1,000 point career mark. Meanwhile the Bulldogs got back on the winning track with a 63-19 rout of STAA.

Coleman has a pair of conference games on the slate, hosting Lena Thursday before traveling to Crivitz Tuesday. Peshtigo on the other hand will play in 3 M-O clashes...at Gillett Thursday, host Suring Friday in a makeup game and entertain Niagara on Tuesday.

Cougars Knock Off

Peshtigo To Gain

Share Of M-O Lead

The Coleman girls picked up a share of the M-O Conference lead Thursday at home as they toppled the previously undefeated Bulldogs of Peshtigo by a final of 42-37 in a game that went to double overtime.

"They fought hard tonight, they responded," said Coleman head coach Jeff Bronson. "We got contributions from a lot of our players tonight. This win should help us relax a little bit. We proved we can play with them."

The Cougars were off and running early, using the Bulldogs ' defensive focus on center Makenzie Sadowski to get other players involved.

Coleman might have blown the game wide open in the first two quarters had it not been for the stellar shooting performance of Peshtigo 's Brittany Marquardt, who fired in 15 of her 17 points, all via long distance, in the first half to account for the bulk of the Bulldogs ' points 22 points at intermission.

Without her shooting in the first half, we 're down probably 10 points," said Peshtigo head coach Bob Kuchta. "That was the best I 've ever seen (Coleman) shoot it so we really needed that from Brittany to keep us in the game."

The second half saw things tighten up a bit as the two teams went back and forth with the lead, eventually pushing the game into two overtime sessions before the Peshtigo turnovers and miscues saw the Cougars pull away at the free throw line.

In the first overtime, both teams fired in 4 points as Peshtigo enjoyed a 35-33 lead before Coleman got even on a Sadowski basket.

Overtime number two saw Coleman fall behind 37-35 before scoring the final 7 points to earn the win. Sammy Schaal hit a jumper for a 37-37 deadlock followed by a Sadowski bucket. Holding the upper hand, Coleman used free throws from Bieber and Schaal to complete a 7-2 run for the win.

Wildcats Beat Up

On Cavalettes

Up by 20 points at halftime with the scoreboard reading 33-13, the Lena girls had little trouble picking up a 56-25 M-O win Thursday.

Lena got a couple of high-scoring outings from two of its key players as Melissa Bushmaker clocked 21 points to lead the field and Kayla VanLanen added 17.

Taylor Wilson had 12 to lead STAA.

Badgers Edge Tigers

Casey Spigarelli turned in 14 points Thursday at home as Niagara got past Gillett 33-27.

Abby Bagnieschi had nine while teammate Brooklyn Wolosyn added eight for the winners. Kara Brennan had 11 for Gillett.

Wausaukee Finally

Gets A Win 54-32

It 's been a long time coming for the Wausaukee gang but the Rangers finally broke through with their first conference win of the season Thursday night in Crivitz as they blasted the Wolverines 54-32.

Wausaukee got double-digit scoring performances from four of its players in the game. Crysta Clark led all players with her 11 while Kaylor DeLaet, Alexis Ranallo and Jasmin Ramos each chipped in 10.

-Monday’s Results-

Milestone For Makenzie

As Coleman Rolls 55-16

The 1000 Point Club banner on the wall of the Coleman gym had seven names on it Monday morning.

On Tuesday morning, the Cougar athletic department was busy adding number eight to the storied roster of Coleman basketball greats as Makenzie Sadowski scored down low with five and a half minutes showing on the clock in the second quarter on Monday night on her home court to tally her 1000th and 1001th career points.

"It feels great, like all my hard work has finally paid off," Sadowski said after the game. "But my teammates are great. They 're just the best teammates I could ask for. Very supportive."

With Sadowski 's milestone out of the way early, the Cougars went about their business and proceeded to dismantle the visiting Badgers of Niagara by a lopsided final of 55-16.

Sadowski, needing seven on the night to hit the 1000-point mark, turned in 15 by the end of the game, as did teammate Hope Process. Abby Bieber chipped in 10.

Brooklyn Wolosyn paced Niagara with seven points.

Bulldogs Breeze

By Cavalettes

The Peshtigo girls held the visiting Cavalettes to under 10 points in each of the game 's four quarters on Monday and cruised to an easy 63-19 victory.

Amanda Majewski had the hot hand for the Bulldogs as she netted 20 points while Brittany Marquardt added 14 and Amanda Emmes eight.

Riley Schultz led STAA with a solid 13-point game.

Lena Outlasts Wausaukee

The Rangers held a three-point lead at halftime and looked poised to take their second M-O win of the season on Monday but Lena stormed back with 18 in the third and then 14 points in the final frame to upend the visitors 55-47.

Melissa Bushmaker tallied 17 points for Lena to lead all scorers while Wausaukee 's Crysta Clark led all scorers with 18 in the loss.

Eagles Bounce

Wolverines 59-29

Calley VanBellinger racked up 16 and teammate Erin Fisher added 13 points as Suring took care of Crivitz 59-29.

The Wolverines were paced by seven points from Jennifer Kempka.

-Non League Results-

Peshtigo Survives

Bonduel Rally 47-43

The Bulldogs built a 24-14 lead by halftime on Saturday at home against a tough Bonduel team and then managed to weather a comeback attempt by the Bears to hang on for a 47-43 win in non-conference play.

Peshtigo 's Brittany Marquardt continues to shoot the ball extremely well, firing in 18 points against Bonduel to lead all scorers while Carly Dietrich added nine.

Coleman Tips

Crandon In OT

In a key non-league battle Tuesday, the Coleman Cougars continued their winning ways with a 52-50 overtime win over Crandon of the Northern Lakes Conference in a foul-filled affair.

The men in stripes whistled 39 fouls in the game, 20 of those against the Cougars. A total of 64 free throws were shot as Coleman finished with an 18-34 mark.

Coleman forced overtime when Makenzie Sadowski sank two free throws with 4.4 seconds left for a 40-all deadlock. In the 4 minute extra session, Sadowski canned two baskets and a free throw as the Cougars made 4 of 11 free throws.

Sadowski finished with a team high 17 points, Hope Process added 11 and Sammy Schaal 9.

Amira Erdmann topped Crandon with 20 points.
