M-O Cagers Register 4 Wins In Opening Round

Crivitz Upended In D-4 Contest

There were few surprises on opening night as the WIAA boys basketball tournament tipped off Tuesday. Locally the M-O Conference saw 4 teams move on and 4 others get the proverbial “tourney boot”.

All of the winners came in Division 5 as top seed Wausaukee whipped White Lake 70-25, Suring defeated Phelps 57-32, Gillett beat Sevastopol 48-27 and STAA crushed Valley Christian 65-16.

The Goodman-Pembine Patriots also enjoyed a victorious opening night besting Three Lakes 63-43.

In Division 4 action, both Crivitz and Coleman saw their seasons come to an end. Getting the number 7 seed, Crivitz (15-8) suffered a 57-35 loss to 10th seed Stratford while Coleman was roughed up by Marathon 60-19.

The regional semifinals will take place on Friday, February 28 as top seed and M-O champion Peshtigo (21-1) hosts Oconto Falls in Division 3 play starting at 7pm.

“We have a lot of experience to rely on and our kids probably won’t see any better players then they have faced all season. This will be a challenge for us, but we are ready for it,” Peshtigo coach Ryan Spaulding said.

Other semifinal clashes find Oconto entertaining Spencer in D-4 while three area teams will compete in Division 5...Wausaukee welcomes Florence, Suring visits Goodman-Pembine (20-2) and Gillett (7-16) travels to STAA.

The regional finals will take place at the highest seed on Saturday, March 1 beginning at 7pm.



-Division 2 Results-

Marines Fall In

Opener 70-41


Marinette (2-20) battled host Notre Dame on even terms in the first quarter (14-11) but couldn’t hang on and suffered a 70-41 tournament loss. A 19-4 second period blitzing put the purple and white cagers in arrears by halftime 33-15.

Sophomore guard Garrett Waloway pumped in 12 points to pace the Marines, Zach DeLong added 10 while Marcus Maguire and Matt Richmond netted 5 points each.



-Division 3 Results-

Oconto Falls Cruises

In Tourney Opener 64-45


Coming off a long season, the Oconto Falls Panthers opened D-3 post-season action on a winning note with a 64-45 victory over visiting Wittenberg-Birnamwood. The Panthers used a 42-26 second half scoring edge to pull away.

Riley Gruetzmacher paced the winners with 24 points while Mike Fifield added 11.

In a clash where 58 fouls were called, Oconto Falls made 25 of 44 free throws.



-Division 4 Results-

Crivitz Falls To

Stratford 57-35


Coming into the contest as the higher seed didn’t help Crivitz as Stratford flexed its defensive muscle to claim a 57-35 win. To make things worse, Crivitz played without the services of senior Ben Fischer, who suffered a concussion in practice on Monday.

The Wolverines struggled for points in the first half and trailed 33-13. Coach Jeff Baumann saw his troops muster up 8 first quarter points and only 5 in the second frame.

With Blaine Bauer and Kershaw Stumbris canning three point shots, the Wolverines put together their biggest scoring output of the game with 13 points, but were on the short end of a 44-26 score heading into the fourth quarter.

Jacob Sawinski and Bauer shared team high scoring honors with 9 points each, Colton Lange added 5 and David Poh 4.

Jake Reif fired in 17 points to led Stratford while Jeremiah Hubing netted 10.



-Division 5 Results-

Rangers Rolls To

Lopsided Victory

Over White Lake


What was expected to happen, did as the Wausaukee Rangers ran White Lake out of the gym in claiming a 70-25 win.

“We got off to a slow start, but played better in the third quarter,” Wausaukee coach John Ranallo said.

Owning the scoring edge in every quarter, Wausaukee saw 10 players produce points. Zach Orlando sparked the Rangers with 16 points, 8 coming in the third quarter, Aaron Schlies tallied 11 while James Kramer and Russell Smith netted 8 points each.

Wausaukee was rolling from the opening tip, claiming an 18-5 edge as Orlando fired in a trio of baskets. Period two saw Quentin Ranallo go 4-4 from the free throw stripe and Smith tack on 5 points to extend the upper hand to 34-15.

Coming out of the halftime break, the Rangers put the game away with a 29-8 run. Schlies slipped in for 8 points on 4 baskets, Orlando canned a pair of threes and a bucket for 8 while Kramer chipped in with 6 points.

With the clock running the entire fourth quarter, Wausaukee wrapped up the win with a 7-2 edge.

Niagara Topped

By Florence 49-44


Connor Beaster was the difference as the Florence center tallied 26 points to help turn back visiting Niagara 49-44.

Florence grabbed a 15-6 first quarter lead only to see Niagara close the gap by halftime 25-19. The host Bobcats owned a 34-25 edge after three frames then held off a late Niagara rally.

Zach Walker topped Niagara with 21 points while Joey Swanson and Adam Parent added 9 each.

Patriots Pound

Three Lakes 63-43


The Goodman-Pembine Patriots had no trouble in their tournament opener Tuesday pounding visiting Three Lakes 63-43. The victors built up a comfortable 36-25 halftime cushion then put the game way with a 14-4 third quarter spurt.

Trent Heath and Austin Glanzer fired in 18 points each for the Patriots while Randall Bose added 8.

Suring Dominates

Phelps In Opener

A trio of Suring cagers finished in double digit scoring to key a 57-32 rout of Phelps in the D-5 opener. Tyler Fisher paved the way with 18 points while Dillon Kempen and John Horst added 11 points each.

The Eagles built up a 22-13 halftime lead and wrapped up the win with a 35-19 second half charge.

Fisher did most of his scoring damage the fourth quarter with 8 points while Horst went 5-7 from the free line in the frame.

Sawyer Reisner topped Phelps with 15 points, 11 coming in the second half.

Cavaliers Clobber

Valley Christian In

Opening Clash 65-16


Talk about a dominating performance!

The Cavaliers never let visiting Oshkosh Valley Christian get comfortable in claiming a 65-16 tournament victory. Coach Ric Powers saw his troops race to a 41-9 halftime cushion before unloading a 24-7 second half charge. The STAA defensive pressure proved to be too much for Valley Christian, resulting in a number of steals and layups.

Jameson Bardowski topped the Cavaliers scoring parade with 20 points, Kiefer Powers added 19 and Varan Vasant 10.

Gillett Slams

Sevastopol


The one-two punch of Dylan Roberts and Jake Kasten combined for 37 points as Gillett slammed visiting Sevastopol 48-27. The Tigers roared to a 21-9 halftime edge before tacking on a 27-18 second half charge.

Austin Krahn netted 16 points for Sevastopol (3-18).

Lena Loses To

NEW Lutheran


The Lena cagers saw a 1-22 season come to a close with a 73-39 setback to highly touted and the topped ranked team in the D-5 state polls, NEW Lutheran. The Lancers (22-1) owned the scoring edge throughout the game and were up 37-18 at halftime.

Dakota Zinser paced NEW with 21 points, 15 being scored in the first half.

Nash Haney fired in 9 points for Lena, Dalton Anderson 7 and Hunter Borchert 6.
