Peshtigo Falls In D-3 Finals

Stops Northland Pines 57-47 In

Semis, Comes Up Short Against

Oconto Falls 44-25; Finishes 21-4

After claiming a pair of victories to open Division 3 tournament action, the Peshtigo Bulldogs run came to an end Saturday night in the regional finals with a 44-25 loss to talented Oconto Falls (20-3). Finishing 21-4 on the year, the Bulldogs knocked off Tomahawk 72-43 and Northland Pines 57-47 in D-3 play before running into the Panthers.

Elsewhere in girls tournament play, Marinette was routed by Notre Dame 63-19 in the D-2 semifinals. In D-4, Coleman fell to visiting Auburndale 36-32 while Oconto made it to the regional finals before getting upended by Bonduel 50-38.

Results from Division 5, saw Gillett earn a regional final berth and lose to NEW Lutheran 46-23. The lone area team moving to the sectional is Goodman-Pembine, which will take on NEW Lutheran in the sectional semifinals Thursday at Oconto Falls.

Marinette Can 't Keep Up

With Notre Dame 63-19

The Marines found themselves unable to deal with the defensive pressure applied by the number 1 ranked defense in the state and fell out of post-season play Friday as they lost to Notre Dame, the state 's top Division 2 squad, by a final of 63-19.

In control the entire way, the Tritons led 20-4 after one quarter and 39-8 at the halftime break.

Cassie Hilbert led the Marinette scorers with seven points.

Peshtigo Runs Past

Northland Pines In

Semifinals 57-47

The Peshtigo girls met the Northland Pines gang and gave the No. 2 seed all they could handle Friday in a 57-47 semifinal win .

"The girls played their best game of the season overall," said Peshtigo head coach Bob Kuchta. "We withstood a run from them late in the game and we got enough stops to hold them off. The girls ' intensity was extremely high and their confidence and composure was excellent throughout."

Amanda Majewski put together a huge game with 21 points, 13 coming in the second half. Brittany Marquardt added 10 points while teammate Carly Dietrich tallied nine. The Bulldogs also got quality minutes in the game from Amanda Emmes, Addison Cogswell, Saige Ruleau and Nicole Motkowski.

Bulldogs Come Out

Flat Against Falls

From the opening tip of Saturday night 's Division 3 championship game, things didn 't look good for the Peshtigo Bulldogs. The Oconto Falls girls were doing a much better job of being aggressive early on and the result was an 18-8 first frame that set the tone for what would be a 44-25 defeat for Peshtigo, marking the end of a very successful season for the Bulldogs ' program.

"We came out flat," said Peshtigo head coach Bob Kuchta. "We were unable to match their intensity, we couldn 't get a 50/50 ball. We dug ourselves a hole and unfortunately couldn 't dig out of it."

It didn 't get any easier for Peshtigo in the game 's other three quarters. The Bulldogs netted just two points in the second period and three in the third. They managed to put together a decent fourth quarter with 12 points on the board but the Panthers by that time were well in control of the game.

Amanda Majewski had a nice game to lead the Bulldogs with 11 points while Oconto Falls ' senior guard McKenna Larsen turned in 19 points to lead all scorers.

"I am proud of the girls for their accomplishments this year," Kuchta said. "Two division three playoff wins shows huge progress with this group and the program overall. The seniors were a great group of basketball players and were even better role models for those in the community. We will miss them big time come next year."

Cougars Start Hot,

Cool Off In 36-32

Loss To Auburndale

The Coleman girls got off to a great start Friday night on their home floor, looking nothing short of dominant against a tough Auburndale team early on as they jumped out to a commanding 14-5 lead after the first eight minutes of play.

But instead of applying pressure once in the lead, as we 've seen the Coleman girls do time and again this season, they went into hiding and managed just a single point over the course of the game 's next 13 minutes. This not only let Auburndale back into the game, it allowed them to take the lead with a 13-1 second frame on their way to a 36-32 victory in level two action.

"We took ourselves out of rhythm. We were fouling and it really hurt us," said Coleman head coach Jeff Bronson after the game. "We couldn 't get any type of flow going. When we foul a lot, we get frustrated and we get out of our game. It 's a domino effect. We start taking chances with passes that aren 't there, things like that."

While it was tough to watch the Cougars give up such a healthy lead and fall behind in the game, Abby Bieber 's performance was worth the price of admission for Cougars fans. The soon-to-be-sorely missed senior put the weight of the team 's success on her shoulders more than a couple of times on Friday as she turned in a game high 17 points. She attacked the basket on most every opportunity that she got. Her hustle resulted in a few key Auburndale turnovers, including a brilliant steal with time winding down in the third quarter. Bieber completely robbed the Auburndale ball handler and took it back the other way for a bucket with less than two seconds remaining in the quarter to get the home crowd onto its feet with their team trailing by just five at 28-23.

Coleman outscored the visitors 9-8 in the final frame but it wasn 't enough and Auburndale held on for the victory.

Makenzie Sadowski finished the game with seven points and Hope Process, who showed a tremendous amount of heart to play through the game despite a couple of hard hits to her left leg that saw her receiving treatment on the sideline on two separate occasions, turned in five hard-fought points.

"It was a game we had our chances to win," said Bronson. "And that 's all you can ask for. You have to follow through though and we had problems with that tonight."

Oconto Over Stratford

Laken James torched Stratford for 28 points, 17 in the first half, as the Blue Devils took a double-digit victory to advance to the regional final contest.

Carli Meyer turned in 10 for the winners to bolster James ' total.

Oconto Bounced

By Bonduel 50-38

The Oconto girls, led by standout UWGB recruit Laken James, have been a powerhouse team all season long but they couldn 't get anything done in the second half against Bonduel on Saturday as they scored on just four field goals in the second half, allowing the Bears to steam ahead to the 50-38 victory in the Division 4 regional final.

James led Oconto with 17 points but was held to just three over the third and fourth quarters. Jaelyn Jicha turned in 14 to round out Oconto 's top scorers.

Eagles Clipped By

Three Lakes 53-46

A nice 2013-14 campaign came to a close for the Suring Eagles Friday as Three Lakes came to town and handed the Eagles a 53-46 defeat.

Three Lakes jumped out to a 15-7 lead after the first quarter of play but Suring bounced back by outscoring their opponents 12-11 in the second, getting back into the game down only seven at 26-19.

But Three Lakes refused to relinquish its lead once the second half began and managed to keep Suring in its rear view by the time the buzzer sounded on the fourth frame.

Lindsay Schoff led the winners with 20 points while Suring was paced by ten points each from Erin Fisher and Calley VanBellinger. Jacquelyn Lenz had eight for the Eagles.

Gillett Takes

Down Lena

Lena 's Melissa Bushmaker turned in a tremendous individual performance, going for a game-high 23 points, but the Wildcats couldn 't keep up with the Tigers, who won 45-36 on their home floor.

Kara Brennan led Gillett with 14 while teammate Melissa Sherman chipped in 11.

Tigers Fall To

NEW Lutheran

The Gillett girls have fallen out of post-season contention following a lopsided 46-23 loss to NEW Lutheran on Saturday. Gillett, which failed to score in double-digit territory in any of the game 's four quarters, was led by 10 points each from Kara Brennan and Melissa Sherman.
