Marines Play To A 6-6 Tie Against Oconto
Putting together a last minute game, the Marinette Marines traveled to defending Division 4 state champion Oconto Friday and played to a 6-6 deadlock. The diamond clash was put together Friday morning when Oconto was given the okay to play on its field. After a quick phone call to Marinette, the first pitch was throw at 4:30pm.
Unfortunately a winner couldnt be determine as 9 innings were played before darkness took over and forced the suspension of play tied at 6-6.
We played better than we did at Jefferson, but we are still not a real good team. Our defense is still shaky and we probably gave Oconto a number of runs as 5-6 flyballs were not caught, Marinette coach Dave Francour.
Marinette jumped out to a 2-0 first inning lead when Kevin Konyn singled and strolled home as Aaron Benson unloaded a two-run homer.
Trailing 4-2 in the seventh, Marinette pushed across 4 runs to pry open a 6-4 edge. Walks to Blake Miller, Alex Servatius, Kolby Garza, Jimmy Jackimowicz and Konyn forced in two runs before Benson ripped a two-run double.
The Blue Devils didnt back down. Tanner Pillsbury walked and Braden Bahde was hit by a pitch. Following a bunt by Grant Frazier, Kyle Krueger lashed a two-run single to knot the score at 6-6.
Marinette loaded the bases in the 8th inning on walks to Luke Johnson and Colton Dessert along with a single by Servatius. A pop up off the bat of Garza and strikeout by Jackimowicz ended the rally.
Oconto put two runners on base in the bottom of the 8th before Krueger went down swinging for the third out.
Both teams had one runner reach in the 9th and came up empty again.
Our pitchers threw strikes and Benson swung the bat well, including that homer in the first inning, Francour said.
Following the latest snowfall on Monday, Francour commented... "well be back inside for now and I am not sure what is going to happen this week. We were scheduled to play New London Monday and Tuesday then host Escanaba Thursday. It doesnt look very promising.
