Peshtigo Tames Tigers In M-O Softball Sweep

Issue Date: May 7, 2014

Meet Wausaukee

Twice Next Week

Notching a pair of road wins over Gillett Monday, the Peshtigo Bulldogs remain in the lead of the 7-team M-O Conference softball circuit. The Bulldogs had no trouble blanking Gillett 10-0 and 9-0 to improve their league readout to 6-0.

Second place Wausaukee (5-1) nipped Gillett 13-12 and Coleman 20-9 to remain one game behind the leaders.

The top two teams will collide twice within three days next week, May 13 in Peshtigo and at Wausaukee May 15.

The Crivitz Wolverines captured 4 league outings to improve their diamond mark to 6-2 and are one game back of Peshtigo. Crivitz clobbered Coleman 12-2 Thursday, topped Gillett 8-3 Friday before sweeping Niagara 7-1 and 12-5 Monday.

-Thursday’s Results-

Rangers Knock

Off Gillett 13-12

In a high scoring conference clash, the Rangers used a squeeze bunt by Veronica Shaw in the bottom of the 7th inning to slip past Gillett 13-12.

Wausaukee tallied 12 hits and 7 walks off a pair of Gillett hurlers, including a trio of safeties by Torri Jewett and Shaw. Crysta Clark and Bethany Gabriel punched out two hits each while winning pitcher Kaylor DeLaet scored 3 runs.

With the score deadlocked at 12-all heading into the 7th, Gabriel drew a leadoff walk and moved to third base on an error. After Sophia Distad went down on strikes for the first out, Shaw put down her game winning bunt.

The Rangers built up a 7-3 spread after three frames and took a 12-4 lead into the sixth inning. That’s when Gillett scored 4 runs in the sixth and seventh frames to get even at 12-all.

With Lauren Edlbeck still out, DeLaet picked up her first conference pitching win allowing 12 runs on 7 hits with 10 walks and 4 strikeouts.

Pickett Allows One

Hit As Crivitz Wins

Amanda Pickett held the Coleman batters to just one hit, a first inning double by Mckenzie Kostreva, and fanned 10 in a 12-2 Crivitz win.

The Wolverines let loose with a 12-hit attack, highlighted by 3 safeties each from Cece Johnson, Pickett and Cassey Germait. Brianna Popp and Johnson tallied 3 runs each while Germait drove in three.

After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, Crivitz used solo tallies in the first and third frames to get even. The Wolverines jammed the plate for 5 runs in the fourth on singles by Johnson and Pickett along with a run scoring double by Germait.

In the fifth inning, 4 more Wolverines made their way home as Popp belted a triple, Johnson double while Frankie Guarisco and Courtney lashed singles.

Cavalettes Sweep

Pair From Niagara

The Cavalettes had a solid day on the diamond Thursday against Niagara as they edged the Badgers 2-0 in the opener and then 5-4 in a close game two that was called in the fifth due to nasty weather.

STAA-Lena 's Kayla Boye picked up two victories from the mound on the day.

-Friday’s Results-

Wolverines Too

Much For Gillett

The Crivitz Wolverines continue to assert themselves as a team to be reckoned with in the M-O Conference as they knocked off Gillett 8-4 Friday.

Cece Johnson had another hot day at the plate, going two-for-three with a double, good for three RBIs to lead the team in that category in the scorebook. Brianna Kopp went four-for-four with a pair of RBIs.

-Saturday’s Results-

Wausaukee Erupts To

Whip Coleman 20-9

The Rangers got on the scoreboard early Saturday in Coleman and never looked back as they turned a four-run first frame into a 20-9 decision against the M-O rival Cougars.

The score might have ended up a bit lopsided but that 's not to say the Coleman gang rolled over for the team from just north of town. The Cougars got over the first-inning Wausaukee outburst by plating a pair in the second and then drawing to within one in the third at 4-3 with another run. The Rangers made it 6-3 following a pair of runs in their half of the fourth but the Coleman girls came alive in the bottom of the fourth with five runs score to snag an 8-6 lead.

But Wausaukee is one of the conference 's most feared teams for a reason. The Rangers took control of the game for with a nine-run fifth inning and then added quite a bit of insurance by scoring another five in the sixth. One run over the final two frames of the game was all the Cougars could muster in response.

Wausaukee ace Lauren Edlbeck, following some missed time due to recent illness, got the win as she allowed nine runs over six innings, striking out five, walked two and gave up 10 hits. Edlbeck led the Rangers at the plate as well, going three-for-five with four RBIs. Alexis Ferdon brought in a pair of runs with her two-hit outing.

For the Cougars, Faith Baldwin had a big day at the plate, racking up three hits and bringing in four runs.

-Monday’s Results-

Bulldogs Blank

Tigers Twice

One hit.

That was all the Gillett Tigers could put together against the arm of Peshtigo 's Maizie Reif in the opening game of Monday 's doubleheader as the Bulldogs overwhelmed the Gillett gang 10-0.

Reif struck out six and walked none in the opener. Offensively, Peshtigo got two hits each from Carlee Mylener, Jaden Russell and Dani Sparks. Dani Zahn, along with Mylener each knocked in a pair of runs while single RBIs were tallied by Cady Caebe, Teja Tonn, Russell and Reif.

The second game saw more of the same, dominance from Reif on the mound and big bats at home plate as the Bulldogs took the 9-0 decision.

Reif gave up just three hits in six innings of work to follow up her one-hit effort from earlier in the day. Not only that, the Peshtigo hurler went three-for-three at the plate and drove in three.

The Bulldogs got another two hits for a pair of RBIs from Carlee Mylener while Jaden Russell 's two RBIs came on one hit.

Ryleigh Klaver had a two-for-four performance with two runs scored and Kelly Staudenmaier came up with two hits and scored a run.

Two More Wins

For Wolverines

Doing their fair share to add to the excitement of this year 's M-O softball schedule, the Crivitz Wolverines beat up on Niagara all afternoon and into the evening on Monday as they racked up a 7-1 victory followed by a 12-5 drubbing of Niagara in doubleheader play.

Brianna Kopp was the hands-down story of the opener with a two-for-three day at the plate in which she drove in four runs. Teammate Cece Johnson had a hit for a pair of RBIs.

In the second game, it was pitcher Amanda Pickett, who took both mound victories on the day, who had the four-RBI performance while Kopp drove in two with a three-for-four plate outing.

STAA-Lena Takes

Care Of Cougars

In another M-O Monday doubleheader, it was the Cavalettes coming out on top against the Coleman Cougars, 6-1 in the opener and then 19-12 in a barn burner of a nightcap.

Riley Schultz and Melissa Bushmaker each had a pair of hits in the first contest for the winners while Kayla VanLanen blasted a triple. The Cougars got two hits out of Brooke Pashek in defeat.

In game two, VanLanen tallied four hits, including a double, while teammate Linsey Hannon turned in three.

Schultz and Kayla Boye had two hits each as the Cavalettes got 12 hits in all en route to victory.

-Non League Results-

Peshtigo Falls

To Pacelli 7-5

The Bulldogs were down 5-0 following three innings of non-conference action Friday against Pacelli but rallied with five runs of their own in the fourth and fifth frames to make it interesting before falling 7-5.

Both teams notched nine hits in the contest. Peshtigo 's Maizie Reif struck out three batters but gave up a homer.

Offensively for Peshtigo, Dani Sparks knocked in a run with her two-hit performance for the day, as did Jaden Russell.

The Pacelli girls got two RBIs out of Hannah Rafik.

Rangers Edge

Three Lakes 4-1

Senior pitcher Lauren Edlbeck returned to the mound Monday afternoon and fired a 5-hitter as Wausaukee turned back Three Lakes 4-1. After sitting out the last couple of weeks, Edlbeck was back in form fanning 6 and walking a trio of batters.

Kendra Backhaus paced the 6-hit Wausaukee attack with two singles, Edlbeck belted a double and Torri Jewett a triple.

In the fourth inning, Veronica Shaw singled and scored on Edlbeck’s double while in the sixth, Bethany Gabriel ripped a run scoring single which was followed by a pair of errors.

The final Ranger run came in the seventh as Jewett tripled and scored on a single by Kaylor DeLaet.
