Inlet Acts on Buildings, Report Barricade Thefts

Middle Inlet--Open Book for Town of Middle Inlet property owners will be from 3 to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, June 3, followed by the Board of Review from 6 to 8 p.m. Date was set by the town board at its regular monthly meeting on Thursday, May 8.

Fire numbers, or lack of them, continue to be a problem for emergency services. Town Chair Richard Wade told the dozen persons present for the meeting that they are putting together a compliance letter, that will include advice on why property owners should have a fire number posted. To get fire number signs, Conley Clerk/ Treasurer Charles Stanek at the Town Hall. There was concern about need to contact Digger’s Hotline before pounding a sign stake in the ground, and Stanek said he personally generally comes out to install the fire numbers.

The town has taken legal steps to get dilapidated and/or collapsed buildings and other items off seven problem properties in Sweetheart City, but Wade said on the spring road check the board saw other properties, namely on Western Avenue and Maple Beach Road, that also need to be cleaned up. He planned to talk to the town’s legal advisor.

As to the problem properties they have been dealing with, it appears all but one will be going through through Circuit Court, Wade said. The daughter of that property owner told him she recently took it over and plans to sell it right away.

Wade, in his road report, outlined work to be done and said they contracts for all will require that the work be done by Aug. 21. He said they want to give time for the pavement to set up before Labor Day weekend. Bids for projects over $25,000 will be opened at the next board meeting, which is set for Thursday, June 8.

Snow plowing bids will also be opened at that meeting.

Fire Chief John Coddington reported the fire department had two calls in April, one to a collision on Hwy. 141 and one for a grass fire on Maple Beach Road. Both of the department’s pumper trucks were tested and passed with flying colors, he said.

He reported they had purchased a dozen new lights for barricades for $200.

That announcement led to a comment from Wade that right now they have no barricades to put the lights on, They’ve all been stolen. He asked anyone with information about people stealing the town’s barricades to please notify him, Marinette County Sheriff’s Department, or Crime Stoppers.

Wade said three of the short barricades built by the fire department had been stolen from Lake Road in the last three weeks, and the town was left without one to protect drivers from a pothole by the old Okel Farm on Pleasant Road and a washout on another road. He asked everyone to be careful, as there are no more to put out and potholes and washouts keep happening. Please have patience, he asked. We’re getting repairs done as quickly as possible.

Wade had announced at the meeting that the town had received a $99,771.87 Town Road Discretionary Improvement (TRID) grant to complete the $200,000 pavement replacement project on Moonshine Hill Road from Hwy. 141 to Meyer Road.

JoAnn Leick asked those present to give a round of applause for the Wade, who personally prepared and submitted that successful grant application several others. She said only 52 in the entire state got grants through that program this year, and Middle Inlet was the only town to get funding under another program this year. There were 17 applicants.

She had been told Wade spent about 24 hours preparing the two grant applications. Since 2009 we’ve gotten close to $323,000 in grants thanks to Wade’s work, she said.

Wade said there were 198 pages to fill out for the TRID grant, and if you fill one one page in wrong they don’t even look at it.

However, he added, When you get the approval notice, it’s worth it!
