Village Bridge One Way Effective June 25

The bridge on Highway 141 in the Village of Wausaukee will become a one-way road beginning Wednesday, June 25 to accommodate the Wisconsin Department of Transportation’s bridge rebuilding project. Project Engineer Dean Schmitz of Zenith Tech, Inc., the contractors for the bridge, announced the date at the May 19 meeting of the Wausaukee Village Board. Construction equipment and temporary office trailer should arrive at the site on June 23. Schmitz told the Village Board that the work will not be completed before the Labor Day holiday weekend. The board also approved an agreement to rent village land near the bridge to Zenith Tech for five months at $200 monthly plus utilities.

Also approved was an alternative route for the July 4 parade and a detour around the parade route for highway traffic. Highway traffic will be directed northbound from Highway 180 to Jermac Street, Van Buren Avenue, Cedar Street and North Avenue and then to Highway 141. The Parade will go north on Highway 141, and then east on Fairgrounds road to Ballas Memorial Park. The motion authorizing the change also lifted weight restrictions on roads in the park for the duration of the one-hour parade. Signs will be borrowed from Marinette County for adequate directions for the temporary routes.

In other business, the Board appointed Trustees Bradley Taylor, Ann Hartnell and Rosalyn Figas to join Village President Hilbert Radtke and Clerk Toshia Ranallo on the Board of Review.  That Board will hold meet on June 23 at 4 P.M. The Village Board also authorized Clerk Ranallo to attend a Grant and Funding Workshop conducted by Cedar Corporation consultants in Bellevue on Wednesday, June 4.

Open Book was set for Tuesday, June 10 from noon until 2 P.M. Residents who want to speak with the village’s assessor about their property assessments are welcome to come and ask questions and discuss their situations.

A facade improvement grant for Ranger Family Restaurant was approved, with the proviso that only the portions of the building facing the road are eligible for the grant. The terms of the grant require that the building’s faade be improved within three months once the grant is made.

Tom and Kim Marsolek, restaurant proprietors, also asked that the village subordinate a Urban Development Action Grant loan from Florence State Bank to the restaurant. Hartnell suggested making the agreement between the village and the bank collaborative instead of subordinate. The Board approved the action with three trustees in favor, and two, Kyle Stumbris and Jason Figas abstaining.

The Board amended ordinances on hunting to allow the use of bows and arrows and crossbows in very limited circumstances in the village. The ordinance requires that bow sand arrows and crossbows be used, in permitted spaces, on an elevated platform or on a tree stand, and that the arrows be shot toward the ground. Bow hunting is still prohibited on municipal, school and public properties except where specifically authorized by the appropriate governing body. Both village ordinance and Wisconsin DNR regulations prohibit use of firearms in the village.

Street Superintendent Darryl Schmidt reported the Park opened for the season on Friday, May 2.

At Hartnell’s suggestion, the village decided not to become a member of the Wisconsin Economic Development Association.  Hartnell told the Board that the services available from the Marinette County Association of Business and Industry will meet the village needs very well.

The village took no action on cleanup of a gravel pit on village property until more information is available about the use of a tub grinder to process the trees, tree stumps and other material needing removal.

The Board will hold meet next on Monday, June 16 at 6 P.M. at the Village Hall.
