Redbirds Go 1-2 To Open Season
It wasn't the kind of start the Marinette Redbirds wanted notching just one win in three outings during a weekend series against perennial diamond power the West Allis Nationals. Marinette fell 6-3 and 3-2 Saturday before pulling out a 4-2 victory Sunday.
During a double loss Saturday, the Redbirds managed just 8 hits.
The opener saw Cody Woods yield 6 runs (2 earned) on 9 hits over 6 innings before giving way to Todd Olsen for the final frame. Marinettes safeties were singles by Pat Wolard in the first inning and Luke Kelly in the 7th. Wolard singled in Jordan Powers, who drew a leadoff walk and stole second base. In the sixth frame, Jordan Rasner walked and scored on an error while in the 7th Kelly singled and scored following a pair of groundouts.
Game two Saturday saw Kelley scatter 8 hits over 7 innings while suffering a 3-2 setback. Marinette took a 2-0 first inning lead when Powers walked, stole second and scored on Adam Francours single. Francour came around following an error and two-out single by Rasner.
Kelley surrendered all three runs in the second inning on three singles, a sac bunt and two walks.
We had runners in scoring position in each of the last 5 innings of game two but couldnt produce a run, Redbird coach Nick Brukardt said. For the most part our pitchers threw strikes.
In the lone win of the weekend, Marinette saw Pat Wolard and Jake McMahon combined to toss a 4-hitter, fan 13 batters and walk 6. Starter Wolard worked 4 innings and yielded one run on 2 hits with 8 strikeouts and 3 walks. McMahon, fresh off the St. Norbert baseball team, registered 5 strikeouts during his 3-inning mound stint and was nicked for a pair of hits.
Marinette got even at 1-1 in the second inning when Olsen singled and scored following a walk and an error. In the third frame, Wolard doubled with two outs and came around on an error and walks to Olsen and Rasner.
The Redbird lead grew to 3-1 in the fourth on two out walks to Powers, Francour and a single off the bat of Wolard.
Powers singled to lead off the sixth inning and made his way around the bases on a stolen base and wild pitch.
At the plate, the Redbirds were paced by Wolard with a single, double and run scored while Jordan Powers, Jason Hofer and Todd Olson tallied the other hits.
Marinette will host a Memorial Weekend tourney with two games Saturday and Sunday. Saturdays action finds Peshtigo and Crivitz squaring off at noon followed by Marinette and Menominee at 2:30pm. On Sunday, the Redbirds will go up against Menominee at noon followed by a game with Peshtigo.
