Wausaukee Heads To Regional Final; Bulldogs Drop Opener

Sparked by a clutch performance from senior pitcher Lauren Edlbeck, the Wausaukee Rangers earned a berth in the Division 4 regional final following an 8-0 win over Elcho Tuesday. The top seed in the regional, Wausaukee (13-4) will host Three Lakes (15-6) Thursday in the title game and are the only area softball team still alive. Three Lakes (15-6) topped Goodman-Pembine 8-4 in the semifinals.

While the Rangers keep on playing, M-O champion Peshtigo was booted off the tournament trail following an 11-7 setback to Oconto Falls in the D-2 opener. With the return of McKenna Larsen to the mound, Oconto Falls topped Marinette 9-0 Tuesday to advance to the regional title clash. The Marines finished the season at 8-10.

In Division 3, Crivitz took care of Coleman 16-5 in the opening round before falling to Bonduel Tuesday 7-0 while NEW Lutheran eliminated Gillett 9-4 in D-4.

Bulldogs Battle But

Larsen, Oconto Falls,

Win Anyway 11-7

In a D-2 playoff defeat that saw them showcase quite a bit of heart, the Peshtigo Bulldogs were eliminated in am 11-7 game that saw Oconto Falls welcome back star pitcher McKenna Larsen for her first outing of the season following a hand injury she sustained at the end of the Panthers' last basketball campaign.

Falls jumped out to a 4-0 lead following a productive first and second inning batting effort saw them plate a pair in each frame. A two-run homer by McKenna Holman put Oconto Falls up in the opening frame.

But the Bulldogs, undeterred by the early deficit nor the fact that Larsen was throwing as well as ever despite the long break, stepped up in the bottom of the second frame with a big, five-run outburst to steal the game's momentum and take a one-run lead in front of the home crowd in Peshtigo.

Four hits, a walk and an error contributed to Peshtigo’s rally. Dani Zahn, Amanda Majewski, Dani Sparks and Ryleigh Klaver all cracked singles.

"To have an inning like that against a pitcher like Larsen, in a game like that, I thought was pretty impressive," said Peshtigo boss Tom Christensen, "Falls is a tough team and, yes, I think the way our girls responded in the second showed a lot of heart."

The third frame saw the score remain unchanged at 5-4 Peshtigo thanks to some solid defense from the Bulldogs that turned away a Panther scoring threat. Peshtigo's Jaden Russell came up with a highlight catch as she just managed to track down a ball blasted into the outfield with two outs down and runners looking to score.

But the Panthers were simply not going to be denied victory in this one and, in the fourth inning, they brought across a pair to go up 6-5 before adding another two in the sixth and three more in the seventh.

Peshtigo made it interesting in the bottom of the seventh by adding another two runs to its total before Larsen shut the door on the home team's effort at a comeback to pick up her first win of the season. Brooke Immel singled to open the inning and was joined on the bases by Klaver (single). Losing pitcher Maizie Reif followed with a RBI single while Jaden Russell sent the final run home after reaching on an error.

"It was a good game, concluded Christensen, "Played well by both teams. I thought the girls did well to battle back into it and I think we look very good going forward. We won't be rebuilding next season, we'll be reloading. I think we'll be in a good position with a talented team."

-Marines Fall To

Panthers 9-0

A solid 2014 campaign for the young Marinette Marine softball team came to a close Tuesday as Oconto Falls and their well-rested star pitcher McKenna Larsen came to town and handed the Marine girls an 9-0 defeat in Division 2 regional play.

Marinette had some scoring momentum early on but couldn't cash in as Ellie Wahl drilled a two-out triple and was looking to score. But Larsen and the Falls defense killed the threat when the crafty Panthers pitcher got Marinette's next batter to ground out. More of the same in the second inning as the home team Marines put themselves again in scoring position as Kayla Thielen made it all the way to third before Larsen slammed the door with a strikeout to end the inning.

Wolverines Batter

Coleman 16-5

The Crivitz softball gang, on its home field, erupted for four runs in the opening inning of last Thursday's Regional clash against M-O rival Coleman on its way to a 16-5 victory.

Amanda Pickett, who picked up the win on the mound pitching for Crivitz, also led the way for her team's effort at the plate, going three-for-five on the day with three RBIs to her credit. Frankie Guarisco went three-for-four from the plate with a double and a pair of RBIs while teammate Jen Kempka clocked a pair of doubles in the game and also turned in two RBIs.

In a big fifth inning that saw the team do all its scoring for the day, the Cougars got RBI singles from Brooke Pashek, Mckenzie Kostreva and Amber Nasgovitz. Also registering hits for Coleman in the loss were Alli Nasgovitz and Maddy Bieber.

--Division 4 Results-

STAA/Lena Edged

By Sevastopol 3-2

A quick look at the book from Thursday's D-4 Regional clash between STAA/Lena and Sevastopol could easily leave one scratching his or her head.

The Cavalettes were defeated 3-2 in a game that saw them post four hits overall to just two from their opponents. STAA/Lena held a 2-0 advantage heading into the bottom of the fourth when Sevastopol erupted for three runs, the final scores of the game.

Riley Schultz led the way for the Cavalettes in defeat with two hits while teammates Alyssa Hornick and Brooke Peterson each had a single.

-Edlbeck, Rangers

Move On 8-Zip

The Wausaukee Rangers got a stellar performance from starting pitcher Lauren Edlbeck, who went the distance allowing only three hits and one walk as Wausaukee blanked Elcho 8-0 in Division 4 regional semifinal action on Tuesday in Wausaukee.

Not only did Edlbeck shine on the mound with her eight-strikeout performance, she was also responsible for most of her team's run production on the day. Edlbeck recorded three hits in the contest, good for six RBIs. Also registering hits in the game for Wausaukee, who will play Three Lakes Thursday at home, were Kendra Backhaus, Alexis Ranallo and Veronica Shaw.

--Non League Results-

Blue Devils Too

Much For Rangers

In non-conference action Thursday, the Wausaukee diamond gang found itself struggling to put runs on the board in a 17-2 defeat against the Oconto Blue Devils.

The Rangers found themselves looking up at a 5-1 deficit at the conclusion of the third inning. At that point, following a solo home-run blast from Kaylor DeLaet to register Wausaukee's first run of the game, the scoreboard margin might have been manageable.

But the Oconto girls broke the game open in the fourth with a 12-run outburst to slam the door shut on any momentum Sue Stoltenberg's team might have been gathering following the DeLaet homer.

Wausaukee could manage just one more run on the day as Alexis Ranallo reached home on an RBI-shot from Torri Jewett, who had two hits on the day, as did DeLaet and pitcher Lauren Edlbeck.
